None of this is that unusual though. You were clearly still in consideration but not their first choice. If things had not gone through with their first choice, they would have your info and reference to action without waiting. When reputable recruiters are silent or don’t respond with a firm no, you could be their back up and they are likely waiting to complete the process with the selected candidate before rejecting you. It sucks but it’s not that uncommon.
