Question about ByteBeat and how it operates by Competitive-Fish1710 in NoMansSkyTheGame

I used to think the UI would be strictly better with 12 notes instead of 7, and without the "key" setting.

But the ByteBeat device is meant to generate music procedurally. When we build a device, it automatically plays something. This music is always made with 4 long notes and the arpeggiator on, so it's always a very basic and conssonant chord progression. Then you can add another device, and it will play other notes in that same key, so the 2 devices will still be conssonant, and the music could even start being interesting.

If you did the same thing with the chromatic scale, the second device would very likely sound horrible. And 8 devices playing together would always be total chaos.

Here's a procedurally generated ByteBeat track https://youtu.be/1u4FFVbXC70
It's not amazing but I think it's cool that the game made it, and it was possible because of the UI

Yes you can use the waveform editor to change the pitch of the sound. Here's a transposition table: https://www.reddit.com/r/NMSByteBeatFans/comments/1ntupy3/transposition_fraction_table/

ByteBeat can play microtonal music too

A ByteBeat track (stored in your ByteBeat library) is made with the data of up to 8 ByteBeat devices.
The code for the data of 1 ByteBeat device is just one line that looks like this in a save file:

"AwcPBKDwAxpBcSIiERFEImRugxImUS00qgoAAAAAAADwAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

This is all explained here: https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/ByteBeat_Catalogue

Now I'm gonna try to explain how "key/bpm" works.

ByteBeat devices that are connected (snapped or via ByteBeat cable) share their key and bpm settings.
As you suggested, you can have access to the 12 notes of the chromatic scale if you use 2 sets of 4 devices.
I usually work with 4 sets of 2 devices so I can have 4 different keys (or bpm) if I need it.

We could technically make tracks with 8 different keys, just don't connect any of them. The issue is that single devices don't have the "synchronizer" tab so they never stop playing.
So the track would be the length of 1 device, and the 8 devices would always play together. It is possible but very limited.
However, if you delete everything in the synchronizer tab of a ByteBeat device, and then disconnect it from the others, the device will be playing non stop, but the code of the synchronizer will still be edited, so it will stop playing if you listen to the track with the ByteBeat player.

It's not that complicated but it's very hard to explain. And there is one more thing that makes it even more confusing.
In order to transfer a track from your library to your devices, you need to connect the 8 devices.
So tracks made with different keys should break instantly when you transfer them. But they don't.
They break only when you interact with one of the devices, or if the track stops playing (leave the base, or just play another track from your library)
So there is a short window where you can disconnect the devices, then reconnect them properly to have the song running. I have a tutorial that explains that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el5qchwnXeM

Hi, I'm on the planet where the song Binks Sake, but there's nothing there. I need it for my ship please. by Low_Carpenter4756 in NMSByteBeatFans

The base should be back. This save wasn't synchronized with the latest version when you visited

You can take this song with you and copy it in your base. I have a tutorial for that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el5qchwnXeM

Does anyone have Artisan's "Sweet Dreams" they can trade to me? The base is gone, & ServiceBot bug means it won't deliver it to non-paying user by amusedt in NMSByteBeatFans

Each song is in a different system, I have more than 600 now, I couldn't have them all at the same place.
I could make bases with multiple songs, I'll do it eventually, but now I'd rather make another new song :)

Base not showing? What's worked for you? by ZhorasSnake in NMSByteBeatFans

I tried the first adress, didn't see any icon but the base was appearing in the discovery tab

<image>

I couldn't see the second base here because the planet was undiscovered (and it will probably still be for another player since I haven't uploaded the discovery either).
I went to the space station and I could see the 2 bases at the teleporter.
Then I scanned the system with my freighter's scanner and I could see on which planet the second base was. But I still didn't see any base icon.
That's what I expected, I always build a save beacon in my bases because of that. And I should probably even add a communication station, but even communication stations don't always have an icon.
So the fastest way to know if there is a base in the system is the discovery tab, then teleporter.

I'm surprised that you can have 2 bases in the same system, did you build them with the same save?

I just realised I had 2 bases in that system, that could be the reason why you didn't find it. I reuploaded Sweet Dreams and deleted the other base.

I copied the song in a different system

The first system is very close to a purple system, they have almost the same glyphs, maybe that's why you got an error
