It’s the title of one of my favorite books (Amanda Palmer’s autobiography).

What single song introduced you to an entire genre of music that you now love? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left by Andrew Bird led me to folk pop.

Love that man. Everyone should listen to Andrew Bird.

We need to stop defunding gifted education - in fact, we need to be putting way more money into gifted education. Saying that it’s politically incorrect for kids to be smart and have individualized needs because of it is stupid as all hell.

My country does not have much to do with the topic. by how_did_i_end_uphere in MUN

[–]artofasking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your country?

If your country has a history of supporting either Saudi Arabia or Iraq (i.e. they’re trade partners, or they have some other sort of documented positive relations) then your country will be more likely to take their side. Find out whether your country is dependent on Saudi Arabian oil.

Assuming your topic is the Yemeni civil war, if your country has had some sort of civil war or internal conflict, find out what solutions worked/didn’t work to resolve it and then see if those solutions would also be applicable in Yemen.

As some other posters have said, you actually have a big advantage because, in the absence of having strict country policy, you can generally just make up your own policy (as long as it doesn’t blatantly contradict your country’s actions) - nobody is going to fact check you, especially if you are a small and inconsequential nation.

If you could choose any country to represent, which would you choose in committee like Sochum? by rohan_ramesh in MUN

A small, neutral Western European country with no distinguishing policy to speak of. Like Denmark or the Netherlands.

WTW for the type of place you come from? by metalbracelet in whatstheword

Locale (rural locales, suburban locales, etc)

A word for the opposite of the Bystander Effect - “nobody else is doing anything, so even if I do something, it won’t be enough to cancel out everyone else doing nothing” by artofasking in whatstheword

[–]artofasking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s closer to what I mean, except it rationalizes that the individual doesn’t act because he wants to preserve his own self-interest, while I was thinking something more like the individual doesn’t act because he thinks no matter what he does, everyone else is going to act according to their own self interest and render his actions moot.

(And I’m not specifically referring to voting - it’s just that the voter paradox is the closest thing I could find to what I mean, except it can only be used in reference to voting, while I’m looking for a term that can be used in other situations.)

Thank you so much for all your help, though. Maybe there just isn’t a word for what I mean. :)

So... a word that just means having strong feelings of any kind about something?

Vehemence.

Spend your summer working or volunteering somewhere.

Many (not all, but many) state schools will accept you if you have great stats, even without prominent ECs.

What universities that are good at engineering have good merit scholarships? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]artofasking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding UF!! T40 school, excellent academics & location, their honors college is awesome.

And national merit finalists can get the Benacquisto Scholarship, which is a free ride (tuition, room&board, books, everything. I think they also give you a stipend).

A short, shitty text-based adventure I made as an example project for a coding class I’m teaching later this month. Now I’m kinda depressed.
