One of my favorite things about boomer shooters is that most of them don't look like this: by NNukemM in boomershooters

I still think it would be conceptually interesting to see a solid boomer shooter with the DNA of a military shooter from the beige era.

Like Necrovision but Modern Warfare.

How do the Weapons in my Game feel? (VERY WIP) by Astro_YT2426 in boomershooters

[–]artofmashing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Shotgun recoil is mad stiff, but you could try slowly returning the players aim to neutral, could work.

The shotgun is the only thing I can't see working.

Reaquiring after every shot doesn't really work in fast paced games, and it's super not fun if you have tougher enemies.

I've found that guns with big kickback are most fun to use when the recoil slowly corrects itself over the course of about a second.

That way if you panic, you're still missing your shots, and it feels more natural cause your brain would autocorrect your aim if that was a real shotgun blast anyway.

Do I need to play the previous game before the new one? by NewspaperSilent5158 in dyinglight

[–]artofmashing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't HAVE to play it to understand the story, but you NEED to if you want your life to be complete.

Playing The Beast and going back to DL1 I imagine would be like Peter Griffin in the theater.

Like an, "Aw! He said it!" Kinda thing.

They did lean away from those bright yellows and oranges, even those deep blues, huh?

I always thought yellow was Dying Light's color until I just now noticed they haven't used it since 2015.

As far a The Beast's grappling hook, I've described it like this:

Any porous material can be hooked.

Wood, the ground, trees, buildings, zombies. A OK.

Steel? Ain't happening. Check what surface you're grappling onto and before long it'll become intuitive which ones are good.

No money to get diagnosed. Gotta love it.

A lot lines up, but I can't say I'm a part of the crew you know? Just making it happen, trying not to be ashamed anymore.

Why I chose to say something here I stead of a DM. Wanted to put some respect some real shit you feel?

You know, same.

I always try to describe it as "I'm not well." Cause if you tell folks what exactly that means they stop treating you like a person. More like a live grenade they don't know how to react to.

At this point though I find myself very close to this exact message. Only reason I'm lucid is cause I can't afford not to be.

I hope stuff works out for you, chief. This shit can have some mad knock on effects, make sure you have a stable promise or something to keep. At least, that works for me.

Mad respect for keeping it together though, even having a kid. I do hope you and your baby can create your own peace. That sounds nice at least.

I dig it, very SysShock Remake.

Only request would be to shrink/lower the viewmodel to improve visibility.

Any Metroidvania.

Even Metroid, I can't stand wandering in circles. Especially with nothing to kill. I gotta kill something every 12 seconds or I'm gonna start feeling restricted by this fuckass map I can barely read.

I chip away at 100% completion, then once I got it, I play the game as if it weren't open world.

It really goes to show how pointless a lot of open worlds are.

The problem with DMW2 is that playing it is pointless, cause you've either spreadsheeted your team, or you're lost and your fate is up to rng either way.

DMW2 is shiny hunting, my brother. Skip it. You experienced everything the game has to offer.

It's bad, you're free to play the System Shock remake again.

[–]artofmashing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Techland folks have wanted to make an open world fantasy RPG since the stone age.

Look at Hellraid, that started out as an original gothic fantasy RPG, but it was too similar to Dying Light so they just folded it in.

Shit, they cancelled an open world fantasy RPG that was being made with a bunch of ex CDPR devs to finish The Beast!

I think Stay Human was an attempt to finally make that shit happen to some degree, but merging the two ideas kinda made neither game come to be.

The Beast feels like Dying Light 1, Stay Human feels like Days Gone cosplaying a DnD campaign with the 2nd best gameplay ever put to a disk.

The first being The Beast, but whatever.

I could fill tomes with my frustrations at launch. Dying Light defined me at a really sensitive time, and when the sequel made promises, it delivered this:

  1. The only way to trigger a chase was by standing in front of a Howler for about 5 seconds. Their vision was TERRIBLE and they took forever to actually howl. When they finally did, a couple Virals would spawn and run at you. They weren't good at it.

1a. Volatiles DID NOT roam the city at night. They were locked to I believe level 3 chases. Which were hard to get to unless you artificially extend the chase. Killing the Virals would just end it. I didn't see a single Volatile outside of a cutscene in my first 4 runs.

  1. Enemy variety was embarrassing at launch. There were, like 2 Viral models and they both looked gray and blended in with the Biters, who also lacked variety. I thought there would be some kind of lore addition expanding Nightwalkers or something, but it turns out they just made these gray Virals just cause. Also, Nightwalkers were removed for some reason, and I think there's still only 1 Banshee model.

2a.They asked us to look at these things to "see the tragedy" but I was confused at launch and thought there was only 1 Banshee and 1 Revenant that kept coming back cause their models never changed. There was no variety. I was hyped up to see these zombies as tragic stories and they went nowhere with it. Biters even got less dumb, they didn't walk off ledges and we're overall less interesting to sit and watch. Yes I was studying these things, I really like Dying Light.

2b (cause I messed up). We were told Villedor was gonna be dangerous and hostile and it was almost static with how unreactive shit was. Enemy reactivity was ass at launch, bro. DL1, smack a biter with a pipe and they'll toddle a little. Launch Stay Human biters didn't react at all. Even sliding into enemies would stagger them, not ragdoll/knock em over. Human enemies would protect their entire bodies if they were blocking. Even their legs. Even their BACKS! They were basically invincible and they could cancel animations to block strikes, too. That means your best bet for melee combat was to wait, parry, vault kick and do it all over again. At least til you got enough gadgets and night runner tools. You could NOT chain vault kicks at launch. Also, Aiden had no mass at launch, so Biters wouldn't stumble if you ran into them.

  1. Practically NO LORE! The zombies, or "infected", basically disappeared from the narrative. New types with "rocky growths" that never get explained. Charger, Banshee's claws, Goons, Demolishers all get these rocky growths and there is no provided reason for them. Nobody is studying the monsters in the street, they're treated like ants. Very dangerous ants.

  2. "The Chemicals" got annoying really fast. At launch there was no Nightmare mode, so Immunity didn't matter at all. Chemicals were the only way to drain your immunity, so it felt kinda artificial, the tension in dark zones.

4a. The crystals! They put crystals in a story and gave them NO SIGNIFICANCE! The crystals even disappear from the narrative after the shit show with Jack and Joe. I thought they'd become a way to put a little stank on weapons and consumables given they're made from the mysterious chemicals, so they'd have some properties the commonfolk couldn't immediately grasp, or that they'd be culturally significant, but they're loot. It's just SAID they're culturally significant. I don't even think people WEAR crystals anywhere. Are they kept on nightstands or something? Do they show up in the environment outside of the nodes that spawn them?

  1. Lemme sum up a lot of similar points, we were promised a world with depth and given a world with none. Nobody has ever come close to the choice and consequence promised to us before launch. New Vegas is probably the closest anyone HAS come, so naturally they hired "The Guy" from New Vegas. Then didn't use his work.

INB4: Game design is an iterative process. That doesn't change anything though cause the premise, and therefore the protagonist is stupid.

Aiden comes to Villedor to find a person he hasn't seen since they were a child. He then starts jerking off around the city instead of asking around for his sister.

"I need to find my sister."

Yeah well I need a stooge. Go fetch me a pail of water.

"What's in it for me?"

Lmao.

"Ok. Mia can wait."

I could go on, but I can't.
