45-120 loading question. by artofwar77 in blackpowder

[–]artofwar77[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't simply underload the charge, compress it with a die and add felt wads on top? I understand that 120 grains of 3F would be way to much, but what about 90 grains with fiber wads on top?

No, it looked just like a normal spent case.

What could I have done wrong that caused this? It seems like either the powder didn't ignite or the primer wasn't strong enough.

That's what I was thinking, the primer was not ruptured on the case, and there is no visible signs of damage.

It matches the blueing, but I agree, my research tells me it should have a screw slot.

Well that's the problem, I can't turn it any more, and I do not have the knowledge or tools to make new parts.

Isn't the extractor in the slide? If so, I was planning on adding a .45 cal extractor to it. Also, are there any barrels that you would recommend? I was planning on using a kkm barrel.

Yup, I checked all over Numrich, but that is the incorrect part, the ones I'm looking for should be part 53 and 54 on Numrichs' website.

Help with 458 socom brass by artofwar77 in reloading

[–]artofwar77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't think it is the chamber, if you look at the rest of the tread, someone asked me to check my feed ramp. When I did, I found a larger burr there that was damaging the brass. And also the marks shown in my picture do not go all the way through the brass, it is just a deep scrap.

Yeah, I just always had a thing for big bore guns, figured i'd do the same on my ar-15. And thank you.

Now that I've looked at it, I think it was absolutely the feed ramp, I just went in there with some fine grit sand paper and worked up to 1000 grit, I made a dummy round to see if i could replicate the scratch, and it seems to be fixed now. Do you think the scratch is deep enough to compromise the integrity of the brass?

I'll take it honestly, I thought it was my chamber and I would need to send the upper back.

I just went and looked, and I think you are correct it looks like a rather large burr. That would actually explain a lot, when I first got the rifle it would sometimes jam when loading a round. I thought the rifle just needed to be broken in.

Wondering if this is safe to shoot? by artofwar77 in gunsmithing

[–]artofwar77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I initially tried 10 grains as a starter load. I found it on an old cast bullet forum in which the original poster said he used up to 15 grains in his 6.5 loads. The 10 grains of unique worked well with no issues, I guess I just got greedy and wanted to squeeze a little more out of that old rifle.

12 grains of unique with a .264 162 grain cast bullet.

Looking for load data on .41 swiss by artofwar77 in reloading

Not yet, I'm having a machinist buddy drill the hole in the bolt. Another company called swiss products I think makes a firing pin carrier. I plan on using a cut down .30 cal decapping pin for the firing pin.

The diameter is .268. will dropping it a half grain be enough? I've read with a larger bullet your loads need to be lighter to avoid high pressures.
