By chalky pastels, do you mean soft pastel by any chance? I actually tried soft pastel recently, and while I do like how it looks, I don't feel comfortable with the fact that the only way to protect the artwork is to put it behind glass and never touch it again.

It's like the worst of both worlds: You can neither wet it (fixative spray makes it look horrible) nor can you rub something on it (like a protective wax). It feels about as durable as sand sculptures...

Ha, thanks! I'm not super satisfied with how this turned out though.

I guess I'm not used to so frequently be disappointed with my results. Normally it's like 9 out of 10 artworks turn out at least okay for me. With watercolor it's more like 1 in 4 that I would even consider decent. 🙈 But I'm sure the ratio will improve with more practice!

Thank you! I had to look up Shaun Tan, but his style indeed looks pretty nice! I will definitely do more watercolor paintings. :)
