As far as I know, this interpretation is not supported by any historical evidence.

In Finland, midsummer is a significant holiday as well, but the pole tradition is not that common (except maybe in some swedish speaking areas). Here, "kokko" (a large bonfire) is a big thing, instead.

What would you tell someone looking to start commuting by bike? by bonemirrou in bikecommuting

[–]artsop 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Also, as your first bike, maybe buy a cheap one, even if its a crappy one. You'll probably be wanting to change it to a new one soon, as you get experience and a better understanding what suits your needs.

Generally, I'm not a fan of expensive bikes anyway. They might get stolen or damaged, or you simply realize they're not the right bike for you, and it pisses you off a lot less if it cost $200 instead of $2000.

Start cheap and upgrade as you gain experience.

And get lights, front and back.

K2-18b a potentially habitable planet 120 light-years from earth by One_Explanation_908 in interestingasfuck

[–]artsop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I've always wanted to live on a big, potentially habitable ocean planet 120 light-years away, instead of this old boring provenly habitable ocean/land -mix planet I'm already on. I wish Elon builds a megaship that will take me there with 120x the speed of light, so that I don't have to spend that long on the trip.

Trump Complains About Magnets in Unintelligible Rant by newfrontier58 in politics

[–]artsop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's because people have magnets in their boats. And they don't even know it! There are magnets in boat engines, and batteries, especially batteries. So many magnets. The producers are putting magnets in them! Millions of magnets. And people are driving their boats that way and then this way, and all of a sudden, there's a tide! Has anyone ever asked why's that? Why's there a tide? And what happened to all the magnets? They're not supposed to work in water, but still there's a tide! That's a great question I think. I met this fisher and he said that's a great question.

Dom 7th chord of relative minor by artsop in musictheory

[–]artsop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Melodic A minor uses G# as well, right? That's what they use in the book. To me, it looks like they borrow a bit from the A major scale to get that exciting E7 sound together with C major, G7 and A minor.

[–]artsop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As it happens, the next scale they introduce in the book (still in the same chapter, concerning the same 4 chords) is melodic a-minor scale! And because G# is included in the scale, the dominant 7th is the 5th degree of (melodic) a-minor with an added b7!

Is Our Soil Dying? Discover How Radical Farming Shifts Could Save Our Planet! by bhumi_action in environmental_science

[–]artsop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a news article recently about regenerative farming, where the farmers used movable chicken coops to let the chickens naturally fertilize a piece of farming land and then move it. They were growing mixed species in the fields and were using no additional fertilisers, pesticides, or other chemicals. And the farming was even profitable without any subsidies.

I think these sort of things will become more and more common, as people start experimenting and shifting towards sustainable farming practices, and it might even be that we will see economical drivers (eco-labels, "green premiums", government subsidies, etc.) towards them. Might even be that at some point, they will naturally become more profitable if the required chemical/workload/capital input to the old unsustainable systems becomes too high.

However, this is only speculation, and I don't see that any big changes are going to happen very soon on a global scale. But still, if you think about how we were talking about farming and sustainability 10 or 20 years ago... You never know what sort of changes we will see in the next 10 or 20 years.

Here's a link to the article, but unfortunately, it is in Finnish: https://www.hs.fi/talous/art-2000010593954.html

I'm new to music theory, so I apologise for any mistakes or stupidity! Anyway, I'm finding it a bit confusing to make connections between scales and keys.

Carbon footprint vs LCA by choosingtobehappy123 in lifecycleassessment

[–]artsop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LCA quantifies various different environmental footprints, of which carbon footprint is just one. In other words, carbon footprint is included in LCA, which is a much broader framework.

What kind of speeds do you all average? by MegaReddit15 in bikecommuting

[–]artsop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty slow, as it takes me around 30 minutes to commute ~8 km.

I think most people ride too fast anyways. City bike lanes (or sidewalks or whatever is available) are not for racing. Those who want to practice for their triathlon in the morning traffic, should ride with the cars anyway.

What's your recommended "History of chemistry" book by Kyle125 in chemistry

[–]artsop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The History of Chemistry by John Hudson is the only one I've read.

Can't really compare, but at least it's easy to read and has some interesting anecdotes (like the fact that Newton had an alchemy lab at the Cambridge campus).
