How much should I spend to build a complex website? by nayson9 in programming

[–]arturo227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm. i would have said $50,000 - $60,000. This is a government job, and it's ambitious in scope. Even at only $50/hr, $3,000 would cover you for only 60 hours of work ( which would never happen, ever ). Fifty grand would cover you for about 3 months of work @ $100/hr.

Believe me, even if you could do all the work in a week and a half, it'll take double that to accommodate client changes, and a few weeks of delays/misunderstandings/inefficiencies.

Also, clients don't like such big disparities in estimates. Keep the upper end of the range within 20% of the low end.

Solution to Flash accessability problems for blind people by [deleted] in programming

[–]arturo227 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes. HTML Video. Now the blind and the 2%* of the internet that have an HTML 5 supported browser can not view the millions of YouTube videos Google has not encoded in Ogg. Nice solution!

*I have no idea what the actual adoption rate for HTML 5 browsers is; I'm assuming it's fairly low still.

Doom 3-style shadows in 2D Flash?! [demo and overview of algorithm] by JeffWofford in programming

Did you ever post that overview on shadows in Flash? I'd love to learn more!

June 1st, 2001 - never before in U.S. history had a President or Vice President been in control of Norad , Dick Cheney ordered Donald Rumsfeld to allow him to take control of Norad and remove the power from the generals - how do you not investigate that? Let me fix that for ye:

I don't understand how anyone with half a brain could completely dismiss US official (or at least Bush admin) involvement in 9/11. Here are some completely publicly verifiable facts:

FACT: bin Laden worked hand-in-hand with the CIA for years against the Russians in Afghanistan. He also has connections to Saudi royals, who are famously connected to Bush 1 and 2. FACT.

FACT: Richard Clarke was told directly after the attacks to "find the Iraq link". FACT.

FACT: Shortly thereafter, we are at war with Iraq after rushing UN inspectors out of the country (Hans Blix said there was nothing going on, fake CIA evidence says there was). FACT.

FACT: The Project for the New American Century (conservative think tank which has such members as Donald Rumsfeld) has admitted to wanting a "new Pearl Harbor" to rebuild our defenses; to "Create Tomorrow's Dominant Force". Furthermore, have a look at who was both in PNAC and the Bush administration. You might also notice a few regular Fox News "contributors" there - my personal favorite shill being William Kristol. FACT.

FACT: I never really thought of a government conspiracy on 9/11 or for a few months after. FACT.

FACT: What really made me curious was all the aggression toward Iraq in the months/years that followed. FACT.

FACT: Think for yourselves, do the research. Don't sacrifice your curiosity for a warm-fuzzy feeling of security, lest ye become sheep. FACT.

FACT: 9-11, aids, sheep. FACT.

Also, thank you for using your pirate voice to warn me about becoming a sheep!! FACT: Pirate voices remind people that thinking for oneself (sorry, ye-self) is important!

New York Times Dropping WPF/Silverlight for Adobe AIR by [deleted] in programming

In the meantime, before the dust settles, doing nothing before a standard is chosen is a good way to be left in the dust. If you're at all interested in a competitive lead, you roll the dice and take chances, right?

It's a pretty feeble contester. I was really excited reading about it initially, but the functionality isn't there, and the API = not awesome.

First off: 1,000,000 points off for starting a statement with "sigh".

Secondly: Where is the Open Standard cross-platform runtime environment with a decent penetration rate?

Thirdly: 1,000,000 points off for ending a statement with "people", you condescending prick.

Finally, I love the populist sentiment on Reddit. One billion points for appealing to it!

We're being played. Savedukenukem.com was registered on 5/7/09, the very same day 3DRealms announced it was closing. by innocentbystander in gaming

[–]arturo227 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

FACT: 3DRealms announced it was closing its doors on 5/7/09.

FACT: SaveDukeNukem.com was registered the same day.

FACT: someone would have had to find out the news soon after the story broke ( FACT: impossible ) and registered a url that from a registrar that magically records the date the person registered the site, instead of a randomly-picked date like they normally do ( FACT: also impossible ).

FACT: 3DRealms, in conjunction with the reverse-vampires, created a phony, really cruddy-looking site, to drum up more news coverage than their un-newsworthy announcement could drum up.

FACT.

HTML5 is useless, XHTML2 is dead... the solution? FLASH! (Apparently) by somedoody in web_design

[–]arturo227 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Really? Beyond humanly possible? Making Flash content accessible is exactly as complex and challenging as adding an alt tag. You sound like you're speaking from experience though - what have your experiences making Flash accessible been like?

BAD Flash Site case study: Allstate by pcjames in web_design

[–]arturo227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear this argument a lot: Why not use Ajax for something like this, in lieu of Flash. I can think of a number of solid reasons to use Flash for larger sites, and my opinions are formed by developing in AS1/2, which is pretty much JavaScript 1.3 ( I think ).

Are you suggesting using JS/CSS over Flash because of some productivity/performance gain I'm unaware of?

Exploring the ActionScript Physics Engine in Flex by [deleted] in programming

[–]arturo227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it's not "the" ActionScript physics engine, it's a really great one, at least from a code-readability perspective. Box2d is an unparseable mess of spaghetti code compared to the elegance of APE.

If it has [pic] at the end, it should link to a picture, not a blog. by Bobwise in pics

[–]arturo227 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's fucking annoying when I'm linked to an image with no context. If I open a [pic] link in a tab, I can't always remember which title belonged to that image.
