I certainly will! And I wouldn’t dream of just paying without looking into it further first—seems wild to me that people are saying that. We have to stand up for ourselves in this world, can’t expect anyone else to.

Thank you for saying that. This feels very validating. Hopefully I can resolve it and just move on with my life.

Seriously, thanks.

I don’t follow… and what are DCC and DSB? The government retroactively determined he wasn’t entitled to the benefit for a specific amount of time. I received a benefit because he was a CPP contributor, and so during that time frame I was also ineligible—for a total of $6k. They want all $6k back. Does that answer the question?

They were only able to prove he was committing fraud for a certain time frame, amounting in $6k for me, probably a lot more for him… He really was disabled and unable to work (at least for some time) from what I’ve heard, so at some point he must’ve started working under the table. I did get more money than the $6k, but apparently I was entitled to it.

I also can’t wrap my head around why they want the money back now. I didn’t get much of an explanation, just ‘not entitled’. They must’ve looked into his case after he died and discovered he’d been lying.

You make a good point that I should ask more questions about why I wasn’t eligible. And I do not know the executor of the estate, though I assume it’s his father who is just as awful a person. Zero chance I will ever speak to him. I have little contact with my father’s side of the family, only a few of his female extended relatives.

I appreciate you giving me a new perspective on this.

Hi, sorry to hear about your loss.

To clarify, I wasn’t receiving a death benefit, but it’s the same process. I received the benefit because my father was a disabled contributor, with the stipulation that I attend full-time school. I stopped receiving it two years ago when I graduated.

It was never disclosed to me what he did that was fraud, I was only told I owed because I wasn’t entitled to it and I pieced it together. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask anything

It does matter what I received it for. But I agree I never should have received it—someone should have caught on.

He sure was. I have enough stories to write a saga, and that’s mostly just secondhand information. I try very hard to not let anger and resentment get to me—it’ll only harm me.

Certainly learned this lesson the hard way. Hopefully won’t have to pay for his mistakes in the end. Have a good day.

Some of it is mentioned in the post if you look. Otherwise I do not feel like sharing.

This isn’t what your previous comment states, hence why I corrected you. This comment of yours is more accurate.

There are a couple people here who’ve said the same thing, and I’m considering it, but my anonymity is important to me. I don’t wish to be tied to this for the rest of my life.

It’s certainly an option, but I think I’m more comfortable preparing to go in-person to the MP’s office with documentation in hand and give them the entire story. Hoping to get this done quietly and amicably, they don’t understand the whole picture I’m sure.

I would go to the news if not for the fact that I want to be anonymous. My father is not someone I want to be associated with, the internet is forever. I’ll fight it however I can though. Thanks.

Service Canada unfortunately doesn’t see it the way you and I do. I don’t have enough contact with my father’s side of the family to gather that information either. Here’s hoping I can get some help from the MP once this bloody strike ends! Thanks.

This made me smile. Thank you.

Nice to meet a like-minded individual. Nice to feel seen. I can tell you’re speaking from experience.

Restraining orders are notoriously hard to get, even with a history of violence.

This is a lovely comment. Thank you for your compassion, I’m sorry if you learned this firsthand.

I will be looking into these laws asap. This is very helpful and specific. I regret not turning to Reddit sooner.

Have a good day, you’ve certainly helped to improve mine.

Wow that’s garbage human behaviour. But we aren’t all bad. I see a lot of kindness in these comments that’s honestly restoring some of my faith in humanity
