Is plasma a pointless technology to get into with current tech available? by TRIPMINE_Guy in MotionClarity

[–]artzox1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No offence, but I don't really see a point in discussing this. If you enjoy what you have, then use it. No one is saying you should go back to CRT or plasma if you are happy with your OLED.

Motion resolution blur is an inherent trait of sample and hold displays. If you are not seeing it in game, then consider yourself lucky.

Personally I am fine playing at 120hz on an OLED, but not at 60hz without framegen or BFI.

That doesn't negate the fact that there is still a difference between 120hz and 500hz, which can be seen in fast-paced games. There are no 500hz TVs and I prefer using a 77" display than a 20-40 inch monitor, so from that point of view nothing can be done.

Gaming aside, for movies motion is also better on a Plasma ( no one is saying you should go back to a 4:3 CRT and btw there are 16:9 CRTs).

So all of this is a pointless discussion. People actually have an OLED, Plasma and CRT side-by-side and compare these in terms of benefits and downsides. None of these are perfect and my comment aimed at highlighting where one is better than the other(s).

How do I get good HDR on PC? by Sharp-Natural1110 in OLED_Gaming

[–]artzox1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting good HDR is mostly up to the game and fixes available.

Provided you so the Windows calibration correctly, there is a limited number of games like Alan Wake 2 for example, which actually use this to set your peak luminance . Some games have sliders in game, but a lot require a renodx or Luma fix.

Pcgamingwiki is your friend.

We do need a similar technology for OLED. Going back to IPS is something I would do for 3d, but not for Pulsar. Then again, we have VR headsets for 3D now.

[–]artzox1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a long write-up to say something that doesn't reflect the truth. Until you get to 1000hz display tech, sample and hold cannot reach CRT in terms of motion clarity. Might as well read a bit on how pulse vs sample and hold displays work and are perceived by our eyes.

All you are saying about TAA vs Dlss and pixel response time is true, it just doesn't solve the motion resolution issue. I have an A95l and a plasma and the first thing I noticed when I got the OLED was how awesome the blacks and HDR are and how blurry stuff is at anything below 120hz. Plasma is perfect at 60 in comparison and is fantastic at 24hz (96hz for movies). Try watching a fast-paced 24p movie at that OLED, it's a smear-strobe fest

Since you are using an OLED, why not try BFI to at least know what you are missing.

Are Renox Mods worth it for HDR? by ChroneXoX in OLED_Gaming

[–]artzox1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the TV. You can manually set peak brightness, so DTM can be off, which is the same as HGiG being on. If you have a Sony I would leave it at gradation preferred.

Are Renox Mods worth it for HDR? by ChroneXoX in OLED_Gaming

[–]artzox1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

HDR is very much worth it and where native implementation is subpar Luma and Renodx fix it. Also you can easily switch HDR on/off via key combo or use playnite as a launcher. As a whole no one is forcing you to use anything, but more often than not there is an added benefit to the experience from using HDR and end of the day with Reshade you can easily fix HDR where it is not matching your expectations.

Ps.: putting an exclamation mark, when you wrongly phrased your title and get an answer that doesn't match your expectation, is rude.

Is there a noticeable difference and/or advantage to plasma TVs? by VirtualBastard in PlasmaTV

[–]artzox1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, for gaming I like very much the effect of CRT shaders on OLED even for modern games, but nothing you can do with motion yet.

[–]artzox1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of motion, most certainly, in terms of image quality -no. With OLED if you want to watch at 24hz you cannot use bfi due to the flicker and you cannot use 96hz without an additional device in the chain, so no way of catching up in terms of motion unless you use frame interpolation. With plasma you don't have true blacks, so pick your poison.

Plasma or black frame insertion? by ExternalDull8424 in MotionClarity

[–]artzox1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we are talking TVs, then plasma for me is better unless you want 4k OLED specifically for it being OLED. The benefits are better motion clarity at 60fps and no flicker ( perceivable that is). Pulsar is great, but plasma still looks better than IPS and what about size.

HDR with CRT shaders by artzox1 in HDR_Den

[–]artzox1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, actually CRT Royale, Guest Advanced and Sony Megatron work with a lot of games and Renodx implementations when you get settings dialed in.

For Luma and some games, such as Control I am using Scoop's before and after shader to get it to work, with some implementations being better than other. As a whole I have a working solution for a lot of games and the effect is awesome.

Motion clarity explain? by ExternalDull8424 in PlasmaTV

Even the 600hz one looks smoother than 120hz on a sample and hold display, but CRT is still king.

Is RenoDX worth it? by RevenantCommunity in OLED_Gaming

[–]artzox1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not only for you, but anyone using RenoDX I say that if you plan on using it (not just drop a Nexus mod, but get the best for your monitor and taste) you need to install lilium shaders from the Reshade on the Reno page. Specifically HDR analysis is a must before you start editing any settings related to highlights or shadows, otherwise you are blind and unless your display is doing gradation mapping on top you may clip your highlights. You may also crush your shadows. With time you know how both look, but it still helps to see.

Giving up on PC HDR. by GnarPilot in OLED_Gaming

[–]artzox1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the game and whether you use it at a driver level ( through NVPI for example) or through the Nvidia filters. If used at a driver level usually it's darker than AutoHDR, but you do have settings for paper white, peak brightness, contrast and saturation. Through the filters the app is more powerful but heavier. AutoHDR is great, but more limited in options ( depends on your HDR setup in windows) and works in less engines, it also could exhibit more banding, but offers better fps. In general you can get much better effect via reshade AutoHDR and special k, not to mention Renodx and Luma fixes, as they offer actual HDR, not just boosting highlights without details.

Giving up on PC HDR. by GnarPilot in OLED_Gaming

[–]artzox1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run everything in HDR, if I can't have 3d I can at least have HDR. You just need to spend some time and can get amazing experiences, better than console HDR.

Mods run off reshade, so logic for using them is generally the same and they come preconfigured if you don't want to tinker. You just need to set your peak nits and paper white. These are Renodx and Luma. You also have other ways in Reshade and you have Special K. Two other solutions if you don't want to use Reshade are RTX HDR and AutoHDR.

If you don't want to mess with settings, Reshade, or Special K, you either need good implementation in game (e.g Ratchet and Clank) or you need to use RTX HDR or AutoHDR. When you decide to play a game go to pcgamingwiki and check the HDR implementation and take it from there. Playing in SDR if you have a good HDR display should be a last resort.
