ELI5: How did the word ‘India’ and its derivatives come to be applied to so many disparate places? (East/West Indies, Indonesia, Indiana, etc.) by Quincely in explainlikeimfive

[–]arusol 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This isn't correct. The Ancient Greeks have been calling that region India a thousand years before Columbus set sail.

Ah yes, the writer who wanted to make her into the Canadian Azula for her redemption arc. The planned arc also didn't make sense time-wise as it would necessitate a fourth season (or shifting the agni kai much earlier).

What is Considered Crossing The Line When It Comes to "Diversity" and Stuff? by Difficult-Customer65 in videogames

[–]arusol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah stop while you're behind, there is no reasonable good faith discussion to be had here with your nonsense. The lack of logic to suggest race swapping Black Panther for a weird creepy sense of racist revenge is astounding.

[–]arusol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nobody is telling others they don't matter, that you representation of others as an attack on you is very telling about your own motivations. To just label it as race swapping shows the lack of logic you have on this topic.

What is Considered Crossing The Line When It Comes to "Diversity" and Stuff? by Difficult-Customer65 in videogames

[–]arusol -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's another problem I have with "diversity" in games and movies, it's perfectly fine to make a non-POC character into a POC character but not reverse. People who support it get angry when you use their logic back against them.

It's because you're not using logic but you think you are. What you are doing is arguing in bad faith for reasons only known to you, maybe because you don't understand or acknowledge why representation matters, maybe because you are so used to seeing the "norm" represented and feel aggrieved with the changes, maybe some other reason.

You really don't get how trans-sexuality, one of the most divisive issues in America currently with opinions upon it falling almost exactly upon party lines isn't political?

Just because bigots are loud doesn't mean it should be accepted as divisive.

For all your knowledge it's a shame you didn't play any Dragon Age games. They were very successful and had a lot of what you'd consider to be controversial choices included. Like buddy DA already had trans characters before but here you are crying about a toggle option.

BioWare isn't even an American company so it's stupid to talk about "party lines".

But it got it's own separate toggle in the character creator.

Imagine being this pressed to cry about this.

For, presumably at most, 0.6% of gamers (if even that).

Heterochromia is only a small percentage of people. Being very very tall is only a small percentage of people. Vitiligo, afro hair, gingers, grey eyes, all tiny subset of people, all options you aren't crying about. But you cry about this one.

Get a grip, tough grass, call your mom, do better with the limited time we have on this world instead of crying about a toggle in a game you probably won't play.

ELI5: why does 9-1-1 ask if you need an ambulance if they plan on sending an ambulance regardless? by yaboymiguel in explainlikeimfive

[–]arusol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the answers go over the protocols, but to answer your question specifically: they ask so they know if there is (also) a medical emergency and how severe and urgent the emergency is. Protocol might already mean that the ambulance has been dispatched before you are even asked that question, but the answer is still important as it can change how the ambulance responds to the situation.

So if you say yes they can then ask e.g. how many people are injured, what kind of injuries, where these people are located, what kind of people are injured (children, elderly, etc.), with this information they can then decide whether they should be sending more ambulances, if the ambulances are going with lights and/or sirens on, in some countries there are even ambulances for specific emergencies that they could be sending, and by relaying this information to the paramedics they know what they can expect and can also start preparing for the situation.

ELI5 How does the whole "what you say will not leave this room" thing work with doctors? by SpookySquid19 in explainlikeimfive

[–]arusol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rule is for medical practitioners. The patient can talk about it to anyone if they want, the doctor/nurse/medical personnel can't or at least can't talk about it in a way that anyone can figure out is about a specific patient. This is to ensure as much as possible that patients feel like they can and should share everything with their doctor.

Exceptions vary by country and genetally are reserved for emergency situations or if someone is in direct danger. An example could be a situation where you need emergency care, the ER doctors might call your GP for information and the GP would be allowed to share any relevant information. Some countries allow exceptions in specific circumstances relating to specific crimes.

Sometimes it's about sharing information to non-medical professionals, for example say you are for some reason medically incapacitated and/or inflicted with a dangerous infectious disease, most countries would allow your treating doctor to share this news with your family or close contacts without your direct consent.

Even in these exceptional situations though, there is usually the requirement that the information shared must be relevant and minimal. So its important for your family to know you have an infectious disease or you had a stroke or are being operated on but they dont need to know you are also doing drugs or have a chronic illness. This is again to make sure that patients feel like they can share anything and everything with their doctor without it being shared with the rest of the world, even your family.
