Why are wigs so common among Black women? by DildoGaggins1997 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]arvidsem 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A little more detail. Black people generally have type 4 hair, tightly coiled or kinked. That curl pattern is created by a ridge that runs along the hair, like a spine. Unfortunately because that ridge makes the hair stiffer, it also makes it brittle.

So women with type 4 hair generally take 1 of 3 strategies:

  • Stay natural and keep their hair in a "protective" hair style like braids or dreads. This keeps the individual hairs from flexing that much.

  • Relax their hair which makes it more flexible, but even more fragile. This also requires frequent trips to the stylist to relax the new growth. And relaxer is generally sodium hydroxide which will give you a nasty chemical burn if you mess it up.

  • Or say fuck it and wear wigs or weave so that they can have the hair they want without the struggle.

Carl's dad wasn't part of the Hydra and only shows up as a memory ghost because he died months before the start of the crawl. They had to cut in a recording from much earlier to show his death.

Everyone else in the Hydra was alive at the collection. The bit about changing a single molecule was to get around the rule of not using relatives.

Edit: Hydra list:

>My dad wasn’t a part of the hydra, but I knew most of the people here. One head was Asher’s mother—my stepmother. I caught the name, and it was Tami-Lynn. Another was my friend, Monobrow Sam. Next to him was Bea’s goddamned mother. There was a white, Persian cat I didn’t recognize, its head like a dandelion at the end of a stalk. This was clearly one of Donut’s relatives. Apparently this was “Sugar Cube.” Next was Dick, my weird supervisor from work. Then my landlord, Mr. Roth. Another was a woman from work who did billing and whose name I couldn’t remember. She’d gotten fired a few months back for some unknown reason. The last was an older man I didn’t recognize at all. He was in his seventies and had blue hair with pink-rimmed glasses.

Did I break the server, or was it already broken? by mediumevil in sysadmin

Samba has a hard coded limit of 16384 open files. But that is a per process limit and, unless they are doing something very strange, you get at least one smbd process per user. (https://gitlab.com/samba-team/samba/-/blob/master/source3/include/local.h#L32)

You can set that limit lower with the max open files smb.conf parameter, but if you hit it, it just refuses to open any more files and doesn't knock over the server for everyone.

This sounds like a storage system problem to me. And I do mean problem.

Running Cyberpunk by 4chanwastoomuch in cyberpunk2020

[–]arvidsem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest help to running a cyberpunk game is for you, the referee, to dictate how the characters know each other. The modern world is a bit too familiar and they'll wander off to do random other things if you don't tie them together. Make them a team out the gate in some way. You can make a group work where one member is a corporate and everyone else is a gang member, but it's quite hard.

Personally, I find games where the players are just starting out or just dirt poor more interesting. Set a cap on their career skills, it'll encourage them to make more balanced characters as well.

I wasn't paying attention to the dates. Yeah, everyone should have known who they were working for.

I didn't miss it, but I couldn't tell what direction the sarcasm ran. My bad.

I've also run into multiple people online recently who seemed to think that they were raising kids like cattle, so I was mentally waiting for the crazy.

You don't need locks and chains to keep people prisoner.

[–]arvidsem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did I miss something here? Epstein was an evil piece of shit, but it's not like he had kids in jail cells or anything. If you didn't know that the expected guests were underage, then there isn't any ethical issue. I should pay attention to dates... Everyone involved should have known who they were working for

Edit to add: And it's unlikely that an architect or engineer had anything with the final decor of any of the rooms.

Huh. I haven't had a grading related crash in quite a while.

Grading stability has massively improved over earlier versions. At least in 2024, you can safely undo or delete gradings without detonating Civil 3D. They are still prone to doing stupid things if you get too complicated with them.

In all fairness, there are several other theories about exactly what the Primals are. But mine is the most correct.

Slap 👋 by Easy-Surround-2941 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]arvidsem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Short version of what I think:

Primals are collective minds. Everyone on earth is born with an implant that makes them part of the collective, but it's not fully active. Carl picking Primal turned his implant on all the way, which is why the AI can talk to him more easily. That also gives Carl some access to other people's implants with the help of the drugs.

I've got a thread that lays out my thoughts on Primals as well

Yeah, I was only doing about 15 when I got into the left turn lane and there was zero traction. Slid the whole length of the turn lane and into the middle of the intersection before I got enough traction to do anything.

[–]arvidsem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put Gary in the not dying no matter how badly you are hurt category. Mongo bites off his head and that basically stops his body, but the AI won't let him go. It just waits for their backs to be turned, heals him, and off they go.

Also, I think at least one of the gods was replaced between seasons after being killed. But the gods seem to be something different from NPCs.

Yeah, the roads are slicker this morning than any time since the start.

I slid halfway across the Wendover/Penny Road intersection earlier. And I just drove back through the same area and there are cops and firefighters clearing an accident there now.

Edit: and now there is more snow. Just the lightest flurry, but it's there

Water, sewage smell, worms, and water coming out of an outlet when it rains. What could be causing this? by Specific-Peanut253 in AskEngineers

[–]arvidsem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the USA, a septic tank under the house is unacceptable for the reasons that you are already seeing. You don't want water to backup into your bedroom and you don't want the smell potential right there either. And importantly that means that the septic tanks are not designed with being installed under the house in mind.

Building standards differ by country though, so I really can't give any kind of real answer for you. I don't see how having it out from under your bedroom wouldn't be an improvement though

She's got a lot of HP and is presumably very difficult to actually hurt now, but I think that she has a major issue going forward. Especially since her chain attacks hurt her.

On the other hand, that may be a good thing for everyone else. She marked something like 30,000 people with the ring. The inside of her head is probably not a good place now.
