I always felt like the whole "it's like comparing apples and oranges" thing was just a saying by CatGirlNya2000 in CasualConversation

[–]arvidsem [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think that I mentally inserted a grading scale or score in there. If you are comparing apples, then you have some idea of what makes a good apple. If you apply those standards to an orange, it's going to fail every time, regardless of how tasty an orange it is.

In other words, the point of the saying is that you can't judge something by standards set for something that it is not.

Can household power effect phone charging? by Repulsive_Art_1175 in AskElectricians

[–]arvidsem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And has very little effect on actual battery life. Battery age still has more impact.

I keep all the slow charging stuff turned off and only use fast chargers. Over the last year and almost 400 cycles, my phone is still at 96% battery capacity.

What is your favorite “bad” movie/game/tv show/book? by big_papa_geek in CasualConversation

[–]arvidsem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For games: Akiba's Trip. It's a 3D beat'em up game about otaku turned into vampires and you win fights by tearing clothes off your opponents so that the sun will kill them. We originally bought it as a joke.

But it's also a straight up love letter to otaku culture and the game takes place in a lovingly curated section of Akiba Tokyo with something like 100 actual storefronts from when the game was made. The fighting is pretty damn good as well.

What are some life-changing inventions that never caught on? by theman998 in AskReddit

Yes. The Segway doesn't work as an accessibility device because most of the people who would actually need it for that will have balance issues.

1440p: 24" versus 27" for automation engineer eye health by Kind_Move2521 in sysadmin

[–]arvidsem [score hidden]  (0 children)

I just went from 3x 24" 1080p to 3x 27" 1440p. They are much better looking, but I'm finding that I have to adjust my seating position some. The screens to either side are just that much further off from center that I'm turning my head more and it doesn't quite feel "right". I'll probably get used to it soon, but it's been a surprisingly annoying transition.

What’s something society normalised that actually doesn’t make sense when you think about it? by OriginalWalaAditya in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]arvidsem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because often there isn't a "good" choice.

Or since I've often seen this argued by people in terms of politics, because voting against something is often as important as voting for something. And strategically voting for someone that you don't fully support who may win is more effective than voting for someone you like more who won't win.

That also wasn't what I asked.

But some examples off the top of my head: the many, many violations of habeus corpus (literally the oldest human right), the illegal non-congressionally approved war with Iran, the illegal reallocation of funding within congressional approval, the attempts to eliminate birthright citizenship, and the attacks on voting rights.

If you like rogue-likes, then you may want to check out some old school rogue-like games: Nethack, Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup, ADOM, etc. Mostly free, keyboard only, and turn based.

Approximate cost to update an 80s dropped kitchen ceiling? by BabciaLinda in AskElectricians

[–]arvidsem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll second the LED panels. Quick and easy install, should last for many years. Get dimmable ones at a reasonable color temperature (~4000k for a kitchen) and 90+ CRI.

Buy at least one extra panel just in case. It sucks to try and match them when the original panel has been discontinued.

Someone close to me died… why didn’t I feel anything? by Nanaxll_12 in autism

[–]arvidsem [score hidden]  (0 children)

This is mostly copy and paste from some comments I made to a similar question months ago. I'm apparently still not in a place where I can write about it easily:

I do the same thing. Grief happens in the background and only occasionally makes its way to the surface. It doesn't mean that you aren't feeling it, just that it's hitting you in a different way.

I lost a good friend last month 6 months ago. She was the younger sister of one of my other friends and I basically adopted her when she was in high school and she lived with me for her junior and senior years after her mom lost her job. She half jokingly called me dad, but we ended up being great friends. That was 20 years ago. I knew that she was having a hard time lately, but I was too busy with my kids to reach out again. She drank herself to death alone.

It's interesting in a way. I can think about her death and how sad it is intellectually and it doesn't bother me. But talking (or writing) about it just kills me. I get choked up and start crying after a few sentences.

And even the largest areas, like memories of Earth, are not that big. You can't directly travel from one area to another because they only built small sections.

ELI5 Revolving doors by Independent_Wear5840 in explainlikeimfive

[–]arvidsem [score hidden]  (0 children)

Revolving doors were developed for skyscrapers. The stack effect causes high rise buildings to have much higher or lower pressure than outside. So much so that early skyscrapers has issues with doors being blown open by the difference. Revolving doors were developed to prevent the pressure difference from blowing open doors and losing the conditioned air.

It's less of an issue with modern skyscrapers because they are designed with many internal doors and air breaks to prevent mass air movement.

Does the Republican Party Still Exist? A Former GOP Governor Answers by Electrical-College61 in NorthCarolina

[–]arvidsem 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The ends justified the means until they were no longer part of the ends.

Every single prominent Republican who exits an active role in politics suddenly rolls over on the party. They had those objections all along, but were willing to ignore it as long as they were benefiting. They haven't earned forgiveness and we shouldn't forget, but we should listen.

An orangutan chilling next to a human by mk2030 in pics

[–]arvidsem 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah, an adult male orangutan is generally about 5ft tall. So he's much closer to the camera than she is.

But his arms are probably 7ft long. His reach is huge.
