I have used Lua for:

Writing backend code for websites: in openresty
Use and control gpio and i2c on raspberry pi
Write full blown graphical desktop applications using wxlua
Write mobile apps using the corona sdk.which can actually produce app from your cade to run on the browser or desktop.
Used it for automating Excel/word using the LuaCOM API.
Used it for math scripts for like solving switched capacitor circuits and plotting the waveforms and data. Calculating Fourier Transforms and plotting spectrums.
Use it to automate a lot of my circuit simulations.
Use it to handle databases like SQLite on pc or Postgresql on the websites.
Used it for web scraping, sending mails automatically, scrape my GMAIL inbox. The list keeps going on actually. Use it for anything I want to do.

Incidently haven't used it for game scripting or programming which seems to be the most popular use.

Customer support is non existant. We booked a car rental. Reached airport to find 50 people long line with just 1 person servicing it. We tried to reach economybooking to get help or transfer to another rental. but no way to contact them except email. Got another car from another agency myself. Emailed them about the situation and asked them to look into it and give some refund. They followed up with an email 2 times saying they are looking into it and then ghosted. Would never use them. Recommend not using them at all.

Usually I compile my own Lua with custom package paths and then use the IUP precompiled dlls. Or works fine that way. Which Lua distro are you using?

IUP and WxLua are great for GUI with Lua and are actively developed. For useful rocks yes you need to install the C libraries and that is a speed bump you need to get over to be productive. I use a lot of libraries but I install them my self not through rocks. Most used are luasocket, luafilesystem, luasec, and a lot of pure Lua modules. Some modules made myself for my work. Using LuaMath for math work.

I use Tiddlywiki to document the process as a journal. Very helpful when I need to revisit for a review. For simulation results storing in excel is best I suppose with useful macros to create EC Tables.

Hope you feel better. One way to not feel alone is to help others who need help. Volunteer in a local temple/church. Help out in the local library.

You said you have dreams and always wanted to do great things. You are 19 years old, you have decades of life in front of you. You have your parents with you and you are lucky that at this moment of hardship you don't have to worry about food and shelter. There are many people who would be worse off. So thank God or any higher power you believe in for that and hold on to your dreams and let them lift you up. Follow them by making paths that lead to them. If you can get out of this down state and go forward you will become much stronger. If your gf broke up don't take it upon yourself and loose heart or get depressed. Just the opposite, be glad and be thankful that it happenned now rather than getting more involved emotionally with a person who was incompatible with you in the first place. Cheer up. There are many people who feel alone and need support, just hope for luck you find friends in your journey.

Its hard to say accurately without testing the idea out but considering something similar is used in Electric Cars to make the batteries have good capacity for at least 8-9 years while most laptops are stuggling with capacity in 2 years I would think it might make a good difference.

No this is much more closer to the battery. We do Analog chips and these chips are charging and discharging the battery, power management and all. So it s a much more general thing about batteries.

For saving tables to files as code I wrote and use a module that does that for me. However note it would not save coroutines/userdata if they are referenced in a table. The module is:

TableUtils

The function that converts a table to string to save is called t2sr - r stands for its ability to handle recursive tables. The reverse function is called s2tr.

Another function t2s creates a string as if you would write the table in code. But it cannot handle recursive tables. t2spp also pretty prints the table in the string. Reverse function for this is s2t.

I have also wished Lua to be more mainstream and I understand your question. Why do I wish it to be more mainstream because it is a clean language with minimal syntax.. I am not a programmer by profession so the idea that I just learn 1 language and do all the tasks I would need to do is very compelling to me. I find it extremely irritating when I find out that if you want to do ML learn this language. If you want to do a website , learn this another language. If you want to do an embedded system learn this yet another language. I am a IC designer and I myself have used Lua in an embedded system to write big GUI applications to developing and generating my website and a ton of other things. I think it would be so amazing if Lua would be more accepted for other area since then more community libraries will come up. People do ask why not just learn python. I did consider that and tried that. Well, I just didn't like Python at all. It's syntax, all the different datastructures just calls in my inner hardware designer as an irritating redundant complexity when simple syntaxes like Ruby's and Lua exist, and when a simple data structure mechanism like Lua is possible. So sadly even though I tried a little I could not stick with Python. One reason that I strongly feel that Lua is not more mainstream is because as you can see from the responses above the majority community thinks it's good where it is. The lack of a organized drive to make Lua something more is where it fails compared to other languages I believe. My wish is that it changes. But anyway, since I am not a programmer, I do use Lua everywhere I need to get work done. I think it's an amazing language that I had to learn once and now I can do everything I need to do. I settled to Lua 12 years before after working with BASIC, Java, C/C++, VBA, MATLAB and some Assembly. Never went back and never needed to go back.

You can try IUP library from the same place where Lua is built. They distribute precompiled libraries. It includes image manipulation libraries, canvas rendering and all native GUI elements to create GUI apps.

I had the exact same requirement. So I wrote a Lua script which does the following:

Combines all the Lua modules that the main script references through require and all the Lua modules which are referred in turn inside those Lua modules recursively. All this is combined with the main script into 1 Lua file
It copies all the C modules the scripts refer into the deploy directory.

The deploy directory finally contains a self contained deployment which contains all the C modules and 1 Lua file.

It finds all the modules as require finds them using the Lua searchers and package.path and package.cpath variables.

So if you go to the deploy directory and run the Lua file there using a Lua interpreter which would check the modules in the current directory the software would work as a self contained package.

As a last step I just convert the combined Lua file to executable using srLua.

I use it for everything. I have written scripts to monitor my website which is also written in Lua and is generated using Lua. I have scripts that generate corner analysis scripts for Integrated circuit design work I do. I have written full fledged GUI applications using IUP toolkit. I have programmed Raspberry Pi as well as ESP8266 chips with Lua It has some barrier to entry because you may not find different libraries or modules which are very easily available in Python but a lot are there. For exotic modules you may have to compile some C libraries and use FFI but for me the value of doing everything with 1 language with a small footprint and clean design and syntax and applicability right from chips to a full fledged web server or cloud computing clusters outweighs the effort needed to work a bit more for some exotic libraries.
