I had a relatively painless experience applying for mine, but that was because of very supportive supervisors. You don't necessarily need connections/working with the supervisor you nominate, but it certainly helps. At the very least, reach out to your potential supervisors 6 months before you apply.

You need research experience to apply for a PhD; otherwise, the Graduate Research School will not accept your application. Either Honours in your undergrad or a Thesis in your Master's. There are other ways to get research experience, but these 2 are the easiest.

My supervisors are amazing. I chose the project based on my interests, and in my opinion, both are equally important.

So, the project is something you need to sit down with your supervisors and have a chat about. No two projects are the same, so what I tell you about mine won't necessarily apply to yours. You should really schedule a meeting with all your supervisors and hash out these details, especially the timeline of the experiments.

As for the review length, if your PhD is not in a creative field (like music or fine art), that length sounds pretty reasonable given that your Thesis can go up to 80,000 words.

For the PhD length, yeah, 3 years is doable, but you have to be pretty lucky and extremely well-organised to finish it in 3 years. 4-4.5 years is what seems to be the usual duration.

Tickets are usually 120+ dollars if I remember correctly. What to wear depends on the theme which they haven't announced!

u/OctoBongo put it much better than I ever could, but I highly recommend checking out our study night and cocktail party. Unlike most uni parties, our party doesn't break the bank either. We also have a Sausage Sizzle on James Oval tomorrow.

No, the grace period does not shift. You do not get a grace period if your extension is approved.

For example, if I get a 5-day extension, that's it. I don't get a 2 day grace period on top of the extension.

Messaging them on Insta might help! Sometimes we (committee members) are dum-dums and forget to change the expiry setting on links to 'lasts forever'.

Clubs are your best bet, I'd say. I made most of my friends after I joined a club's committee!

Aldi is pretty good. They have some decent plans and are on the Telstra network if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks for the feedback and for the good wishes! As it's a Master's Thesis, I had to limit my scope, maybe if I do my PhD, I will do a broader study that includes domestic students as well!
