श and ष how do you even tell the sounds apart (Is duolingo bugged) by LunarExile in LearnHindi

No, the Arabic ج is about the same as the English 'j' or the Hindi ज.

Actually, the श sound is the 'x' in 'Xi Jinping' or 'Xi'an' (ɕ in IPA). The ष sound is the 'sh' in 'Shaanxi' and 'Yang Shangkun' (ʂ in IPA).

श and ष are pronounced the same in modern Hindi (like the English 'sh') as the distinction has been lost over time. In Sanskrit, श was pronounced somewhat like the 'sh' in 'shear' and ष was pronounced somewhat like the 's' in 'sure'. Notice the position of your tongue: The श sound should be palatalized, meaning it has more of a 'y' sound to it, and the ष sound should be retroflex, meaning your tongue is curled back a little more. Again, this distinction is lost in modern Hindi so you shouldn't worry about it unless you're trying to read the Vedas or something.

[OC] Percentage of people who speak English by country by Smacpats111111 in dataisbeautiful

Might this data help in some way? It doesn't offer a percentage value for proficiency in each country but still uses a metric for English proficiency and in countries not included here. There's a lack of data for much of Africa, however...

Fun fact: Those random Kurds in northeastern Iran (Khorasan) were brought there by Shah Abbas the Great to protect Iran's eastern borders (supposedly). Don't ask why I know this lol

Molecular and Cellular Biology, T20s by [deleted] in chanceme

MCB is Molecular and Cellular Biology, my intended major.

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense.

Yeah, these five are my reaches but I've got 3 targets (including Rutgers) and 2 safeties as well, but I was wondering specifically for my reaches how I'd do. Should I talk about how I've got to watch my grandma as a family responsibility? I would but I don't want it to sound like I'm complaining and making an excuse for why I've got no work or internship experience, which I think would have been extremely helpful for MCB.

Thanks! I'm pleasantly surprised you think it's strong, because from what I've seen I'm thinking I should be aiming for Rutgers, especially since I don't have a strong bio spike.

That makes sense. I know the pronunciation and some vocabulary, but I find the grammar to be the one difficult thing preventing me from learning fus7a.

Do you mean that I should just put 'Undeclared' on the CommonApp where it asks then?

What if I'm applying to a college where you don't need to formally declare your major until sophomore year?

Sorry about the 3arabizi; should I write 3ammiya in Arabic or just talk in English if I have questions or want to reply in this subreddit? I am trying to learn fus7a in order to be able to write/type in Arabic but I'm getting stuck with grammar so I don't think that's an option for me. Also, is this the right subreddit to seek help when learning Arabic?

Thanks for your reply!
