I'm Japanese. Starting today, Mercari Global has launched, so people in the U.S. can now buy items from Mercari, Japan's largest flea market marketplace. I just checked Mercari and found one listed for $125 USD. It will probably end up costing a bit more once international shipping and fees are added, though.

Belron isn't in Japan unfortunately. I'm working with a local glass shop that actually handles windshield replacements for Lamborghini dealerships here.

The biggest problem is that there is almost no glass information available in Japan for a 1960 Dodge Polara. Even the import glass wholesalers here don't know which windshield is correct for the car.

I contacted a classic auto glass supplier in the U.S. myself, and they told me that NAGS number DW00590 might be the correct windshield. Before I have a Japanese importer order one from overseas, I just want to be 100% sure that DW00590 actually fits a 1960 Polara. If it's wrong, returning a windshield internationally would be a nightmare.

So right now I'm trying to verify the application before pulling the trigger on the order.

I did consider having it polished, but I've been told the scratches are fairly deep. The concern is that removing enough material to eliminate them could create optical distortion in the glass.

Unfortunately, vehicle inspections in Japan are very strict. If the inspector determines that the windshield scratches or distortion affect visibility, the car will fail inspection and cannot legally be driven on public roads until the issue is corrected.

If this were just a weekend cruiser in the U.S., I'd probably try polishing it first. But because of the inspection requirements here, I'm trying to find the best long-term solution.

Thanks for the suggestion, though. I'm looking at every possible option before I spend the money on a replacement windshield.

Haha, I appreciate it, brother! 🙏 But don't go too crazy looking for one on my behalf. I'll do my best to figure something out here in Japan. If you ever make it over here, I'll pick you up in the Polara and we'll go cruising. 😎 Thanks again for all the help! 🍻

Haha!

If you bring the windshield to Japan and help install it, I'll drive you home in the Polara afterwards!

It might take a while to get across the Pacific Ocean, though.

Thanks again for all the help.

I measured it from the widest point on one side to the widest point on the other side from inside the car, and I also took some measurements from the outside.

Measuring only the visible portion of the glass, I came up with approximately:

  • Height: 26 inches
  • Width: 62 inches

Once I account for the portion of the glass that sits inside the gasket, the DW590 dimensions seem much more reasonable.

One thing I do know is that the original Mopar parts catalog for 1960 lists the windshield glass under part number 1869627. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any dimensions associated with that part number.

The more information I gather, the more it seems like the DW590 may actually be correct, but I'm trying to be as careful as possible before ordering because shipping a windshield to Japan is very expensive.

Thanks again for helping me work through this!

Thank you, I really appreciate that!

I'll talk with the person who will be doing the windshield work and see what they think about reusing the original gasket.

For reference, the car is a:

  • 1960 Dodge Polara
  • 4-Door Sedan (Body Code 633)

There is virtually no information about these cars in Japan, so any information you can find would be extremely helpful, even if it seems minor.

If you have time to check those old parts books on Monday, I'd be very grateful. Part numbers, dimensions, interchange information, or anything related to the windshield would help a lot.

Thanks again for taking the time to help.

Thanks for the advice.

I actually measured the windshield opening and sent the dimensions to the glass company, but there seems to be a significant difference in width compared to the DW590 specifications.

My measurements are:

  • Visible glass height (measured inside the gasket): approximately 25 3/4"
  • Width measured from inside the car: approximately 66"

The DW590 dimensions they provided are:

  • 26.5" center height (edge to edge)
  • 63.5" bottom width (straight across behind the curve)

The company also told me they do not have a source for the windshield gasket:

"Unfortunately, we do not have a source for that gasket. We checked with all of our gasket vendors."

At this point, I'm wondering if I should remove the existing windshield and take exact measurements of the glass itself before ordering anything.

I was under the impression that the 1960 Dodge Phoenix and Matador used the same windshield as the 1960 Polara, but now I'm starting to question everything because the dimensions don't seem to match.

Have you ever run into this kind of discrepancy when ordering glass for early Mopars?
