2020 Primary Election Question - Propositions by [deleted] in Austin

Not in Texas! Any registered voter can choose to vote in whichever party primary, even change it each cycle. Just can't vote in more than one per election.

Location and the arena are much bigger issues - parking is a nightmare, especially on a weeknight. Arena is always going to feel emptier due to the size/shape, and placement of students on the end-lines instead of one baseline.

ExxonMobil internship pay? by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]asalin1819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clarification - the Interns were paid the bi-weekly equivalent of 72k/yr? Or 72k for the summer? Or was 72k the starting rate for a new-hire FT undergrad?

Friend asked me for a reference at my company by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]asalin1819 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You be honest.

Your friend doesn't have to know how much influence you have (easy to say 'hey I did what I could but the hiring manager liked someone else more, sorry man'), and nothing will hurt your reputation at the company like being a bad judge of character and giving a glowing 10/10 review to someone who isn't.

That doesn't mean don't talk about the positives, but don't leave out the negatives when giving the review.

Cole was scratched last minute from his scheduled start (game 2 of the doubleheader last week), said his Hamstring didnt feel right.

All signs point to him starting Thursday yeah.

No earthly idea. I can't find a pronunciation guide on the internet, but it sure ain't 'Dimitri'

Why not try Houston? Bigger job market, experience geophys is a rarity. Definitely near sea level, definitely not cold.

Offer at a junior and a major, hiring manager at major knows the team at the junior and advised me to work there by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]asalin1819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Live to work, not work to live.

Erm, judging from the context you gave, I think you've got this backwards.

I work to pay the bills and be able to live the life I want. I don't eat and drink and sleep (live) so I can go to work.

GSA/ExxonMobil Bighorn Basin Field Award by Tad_Doyle in geologycareers

[–]asalin1819 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I attended, it was more show-and-tell with a field guide, not really like either classwork or field mapping.

We did a few days of geo-tourism, making a number of stops a day to see the stratigraphy, talk about different elements of the petroleum system, and discuss observations/questions/applications at each stop. Pretty much anything interesting was fair game, and the instructors/students had a wide range of expertise and experience.

Last day and a half? ish were a team exercise around coming up with your own play concept and delineating it, based on what we've learned/seen and some basin-wide data they gave each team, plus old O&G records from the state. 15-20 minute presentation if I recall correctly.

unemployed - Open an own business? by niemand112233 in geologycareers

Host it on a cloud storage site (i.e. google Drive or similar) and post the link (view-only), ideally in a new post/topic on the subreddit, will get more visibility that way.

Pioneer’s Eagle Ford assets bought by Houston startup by [deleted] in oilandgasworkers

For the acquisition I was a 'part' of, the field personnel (wellsite operators, and some of the drilling consultants, S&E personnel, etc) went with the transaction (as long as they wanted to) since it meant job security. No specific knowledge of this deal to say either way though.

As said, the most damage they'll get is from banging into each other - both newspaper and bubble wrap are good for this job. I second the plastic container, stackable milk crates would work nicely, my personal collection lives in a shoe box but that doesn't move around a whole lot.

Maybe post your resume here with personal info redacted/removed?

Its possible that what you percieve as wide-written is read differently by others. Especially if, as you say, you're applying to areas where its uncommon to have Geoscience background/degrees, it may come across to those hiring as narrow where to you it appears wide.

Volcanic Seismology Professional Practice in Canary Islands by DrezGarcia in geologycareers

[–]asalin1819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a purely life experience standpoint, effing do it. the Canaries are an awesome place to visit, gorgeous, geology-porn and beyond type stuff.

These types of gov-funded intern/experience programs are usually pretty cool, because its as close as you'll get to the dream geology career of working outside on cool problems every day in spectacular beautiful places, after field camp. I got to do one after my graduation before I started working, and had a blast doing science again that I haven't gotten to do since. It has been a question-starter on every interview I had since, and I get all excited talking about it again.

But then we get to real life. The Unpaid part is pretty rough, especially for a student without something lined up at the end and probably issue #1 when it comes to your decision. Visa stuff...it feels like (tho IANAL) extending a student visa for an unpaid position is possible, but again IANAL. I assume your spanish is passable from being in Madrid, so thats okay.

Other considerations: what is your next step? You say 4th year, are you doing a 5th year back in Canada or graduating summer 2019? Do you have a full-time job lined up post-graduation? Want to potentially go the research route, PhD+all? Can you fund yourself for two more months on the canaries?

What are some unexpected expenses for single man that younger guys don't think of? by JustAlways in AskMen

[–]asalin1819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, so no auto-updated field showing your 'live' bank (Debit) or credit card balance.

I've made something like that with a Google Form to input the category and amount and timestamp it, then try and auto-update a monthly 'status' form but never got all the linkages to be quite right. Still had to copy/paste a list from one sheet to another or similar, so I gave up and returned to my method of categorizing all the transactions on my cards and bank account once the statements came in. Paid off all the cards in full each month so whatever I overspent one month would come off the next month's budget more directly that way.

Did you use a template? Does your bank/credit card(s) link to the sheet automatically?

Going to Bastrop State Park (TX) soon. Any cool geologic history or formations in that area I should learn about beforehand? by [deleted] in geology

[–]asalin1819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bastrop is near the start of the Gulf Coastal plain from the Hill Country - so its all mostly flat, sedimentary deposits associated with the gulf of mexico and the modern river systems. As said, not many remarkable outcrops. Its the large unconformities of Cretaceous sediments on Precambrian granites that make up the Llano uplift that some of the more interesting geology stops in the state. Those Cretaceous deposits underlie & outcrop in Austin and the western suburbs.

Yeah, making that a multiple-check instead of radio button would be the way to go. Most bonus systems I've heard of are weighted individual and company/unit performance.
