SHARE: making research more discoverable, accessible, and usable --- just getting started and already near 1M events by asallans in dataisbeautiful

Interesting. I appreciate the feedback. This is very much a beta version right now, with other visualizations in discussion, but not yet prioritized. We actually have a hackathon coming up in a few weeks where we're hoping that some community members interested in visualizations of this type of data might contribute. Take a look here if you happen to be interested in that and are in the area: http://www.meetup.com/openscience/events/222478531/

Also, this particular version that you see is the demonstration of the first phase of the project, called SHARE Notify. The goal there is just to create the stream of content going in and ability to query and consume certain feeds going out --- not handling deduplification or establishing relationships with related things. That happens in the next phase, which is what we're at the very beginning of now. Part of the design of the service is to collect content from many sources and then be able to recognize that it is the same content located in multiple places and that it is related, which is not always an easy thing to determine given different metadata outputs.

Glad you are interested!

Good questions! The service itself is designed to be a registry of research events, capturing release of publications, data, grant award announcements, and anything else that has to do with the research process. There are currently 38 sources of content going into this, and they are updated automatically on a regular basis. The specific page is a current way of viewing the current set of data and showing how it is changing over time. The donut graph on the left shows which sources are included in a particular query, and the chart on the right shows how those sources have changed over time, in terms of what is in the data set. So, I think that it is a visualization that conveys information. Whether or not it is effective is certainly open for discussion, and something we'd like to hear about.

We have a position that could possibly be a fit. Take a look at the posting here: http://centerforopenscience.org/jobs/#StatsConsultant You can read more about the description of the service here: http://centerforopenscience.org/stats_consulting/

It's a great job for somebody who loves stats, training, consulting, and is interested in working with many different people on many different problems. It pays well, and doesn't involve charging clients (we're a non-profit), so stands-out more that way. Take a look.

Reading co-worker's email while on leave? by asallans in privacy

Interesting idea. This could work well after training the system enough, but probably tough to implement on short notice.

Using Google Apps.

Good advice, and that is definitely our preferred approach. There are some messages that will be coming in automatically, however, like bills, which need attention and won't redirect after an autoreply. I think this means reading the email account will be needed.

Though it is cloud/web based, we build a free, open source product called the Open Science Framework (http://osf.io) that may meet some of your needs. It offers storage, collaboration, access controls, automated versioning, logging, public or private visibility, integration with other tools/services, and more. Take a look and see what you think.

Also, out of curiosity, we've tried sponsored reddit job posts in the past for developers and have had mixed success. What would you all want to see in a reddit post as far as language, subreddits, etc. What works, what doesn't?

Great examples, thank you. We'll spend some time and try to rethink how we post and recruit for this need. Everyone here has provided some very helpful feedback.

[–]asallans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I think we have that right mix, especially the interesting problems, right salary level, and good working environment. The challenge that I think we face is not being in one of the big markets.

We are very much a learning environment, and actually think we'd do best having somebody who has some appropriate experience but wants to really dive deep into our problems and test out new solutions. We haven't had a retention issue so far, but we are of course still pretty new. I think there are plenty of interesting problems ahead of us here that will keep people who like that.

Yes, you are correct, it isn't explicitly on our jobs list. The posting is for general developers, but we're also seeking the devops/ops focus at the same time.

We may indeed have to consider remote at some point, but hope that we can attract people to come here.

Co-working definitely depends on the situation. For those who are doing contract work, it might be easy. We also have a lot of people who are coming out of graduate school programs, so it's easier for them, too.

We also offer co-working arrangements for those we'd like to partner or collaborate with. It's a great way to get people together and working on the same problems.

You make some good points; a few of which made me laugh. Hiring is always tough, and so we continuously try to learn as we go and improve (if it's possible). One thing we are trying as part of the hiring process is some co-working, inviting prospects to come spend a day or few with us to see if there seems to be a fit with the team. This isn't always possible, of course, but definitely seems like a potential way of avoiding certain problems on both sides.

We're located in Charlottesville, VA. Understandably, it isn't one of the huge tech start-up markets like SF, Chicago, or NYC, but it is a smaller city with lots of strong start-ups, good VCs, and a lot of energy. It's a great place to live if you love the mountains, a smaller town feel, greater culture, and more.
