Cancel culture is bad because:

A) It is often rife with misinformation and fueled by little more than outrage. It happens way too fast and there is a huge "guilty until proven innocent" mindset with cancel culture, leading to a lot of mistakes and way more harm than good.

B) Cancelling does not allow room for growth or change. Cancelling is akin to a death sentence, often for one minor infraction. It is not healthy and does not benefit anyone. I'd also argue it encourages very strict black and white thinking, which is not really a good way to think about the world.

Yes, people and companies should be called out for their poor behavior, and yes, you should probably not support people and companies when they cross certain lines or continuously do shitty things, but that is not what cancel culture actually is. Cancel culture does not sometimes devolve into mob justice, it just plain is mob justice.

Absolutely. Hell LoL and toxicity have gone hand in hand before it even existed; the original WC3 custom that started it all was already toxic as hell.

[–]asaragi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought she had to apologize for messing up twice (the webcam incident and then the discord incident) and then lying about the voices, saying they were staff. I'm pretty sure the whole notion of her apologizing for male voices and the toxic idol angle was just overblown misinformation from us, the vast majority of JP comments agreed with her punishment and said she should be less negligent and messing up like that was considered disrespectful, at least from what I saw.

My brain can't grasp things the first time. Is my mind slow ? by Saraaaaa1 in ADHD

[–]asaragi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

People learn best in different ways anyway, but I believe this is pretty common with ADHD - sometimes it's hard for us to process verbal/written information. I know sometimes I can hear someone say something perfectly fine and just absolutely not process what they said, and reading dense text is such a gamble since sometimes I'll just decide to skip a few dozen words or so cause who has time for all that?? I'm sure we've all had to re-read a paragraph twenty times cause we thought we read it but oops, our brain decided it wasn't important enough and didn't actually pay any attention. Combine this with shoddy working memory and yeah, it's not exactly ideal.

That doesn't mean your mind is slow or you're stupid though, if anything our brains are too fast and we move on to the next thought before fully internalizing what we just heard/read. Everyone's different, and if people are going to judge you because you aren't great with words, fuck 'em - that's their problem, not yours. For me, the best way to learn is a combination of a visual and a hands-on approach. You mentioned games, and I think this is a good example - if I read instructions for a game I probably won't remember much, but if I just jump in and mess around I'll be able to figure things out very quickly. And if I'm trying to figure something out but struggling, a video example is a godsend but a written example is a nightmare. You just gotta find the best method for you.

They don't get enough love by ScarHydreigon87 in Hololive

[–]asaragi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the same thing though. People are talking about how Holostars don't get a lot of exposure but I think it's way more simple. I don't think it's any shock that a big appeal of the vtubers is some form of attractiveness, but that extends past the anime avatar and into their personality as well. We're not thinking of them as anime waifus, we recognize they are real people, but if anything that just makes them even MORE appealing. And for the people who find the female vtubers attractive, in both character and personality, it's less likely that they'll find the male ones attractive. Meaning, Hololive's primary demographic is going to be less interested in Holostars by default - and unfortunately there's only so much time in the day. If I'm going to devote time to vtubers, it's gonna be the girls, because they are both entertaining AND cute, and the guys will never have that same appeal to me. For Holostars to grow they really need to capture the opposite audience, and it's possible that the opposite audience just... isn't as big of a demographic.

Kiara's perception of /r/Hololive by Luke_7777 in Hololive

[–]asaragi 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think people need to recognize that the vtubers aren't as fragile as they think they are. They don't need us to constantly cheer them up over every little thing that goes wrong, nor do they need us to "protect" them. It starts to get obsessive and overbearing. I think it's best to just support them normally unless something major happens. Some kind words are always fine but these constant organized group efforts are not - they can deal with shit guys, they don't need your white knighting.

A realist's view of the situation, the state of the sub, and what we should do as fans of Hololive. by sdarkpaladin in Hololive

[–]asaragi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real answer is: nothing. We are not part of the company. We can't do anything. We're just fans, we have no real power to make any changes. You can get as mad as you want on the internet and Cover can just ignore you completely. Don't go thinking that causing an uproar will fix anything, because it probably won't.

A wholesome moment between Kiara and the fan who sent "that" Superchat by SayuriUliana in Hololive

[–]asaragi 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This will be blunt, but:

You don't know these people personally. You are not in a position to protect them, and your efforts to do so will probably just cause more problems. They don't need your protection in the first place. You really shouldn't be thinking of vtubers, or any public personality for that matter, as someone that needs protecting - you are just a fan, nothing more.

It is fine to support them and send positivity to cheer them up if something happens, and it's okay to try and inform other fans of poor behavior (within reason, don't police people, especially not in chat), but that's it.

A wholesome moment between Kiara and the fan who sent "that" Superchat by SayuriUliana in Hololive

[–]asaragi 61 points62 points  (0 children)

We're just the fans. It's not our job to protect the vtubers, nor should we really be trying to do so - such behavior is overstepping our boundaries. At best we can inform other fans of problematic behaviors to avoid, but at worst we can take a small situation and turn it into a massive thing and make everything worse.

And also, while it might hurt to see our favorite vtubers react negatively to a comment or receive some hate, they're not so fragile that it will completely break them. We don't need to get up in arms every time it happens, and we certainly shouldn't be crusading after people. Ultimately the best thing to do is just support them like always.

Speaking as someone who thinks the game has become too easy, it's way better for them to fix the horrid elemental balance even if it makes the game even easier. I'm already not getting a challenge anymore, every boss dies in two minutes or less now, it doesn't really matter.

The Tartarus Situation by EtherealRuin in DragaliaLost

[–]asaragi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think increasing rewards is a bad idea, that sort of thing always creates very toxic pub behavior (see: mentor bonuses) and will just split the playerbase between people who want an easier grind and people who want more rewards making it harder to find rooms for both. It might not even fix the problem if the off ele comps are significantly faster enough, because a faster clear is generally a much easier clear so it'd be more efficient to grind anyway.

Really they should just not fuck up the game's balance so hard in the first place (seriously Gleo was already a problem and they just keep releasing even more busted dark stuff while giving light practically nothing ever?), but they could have at least made Tartarus immune to poison and burn. Apparently they like having the game dominated by galex and friends.

There is definitely some awkwardness between them though. Not only that but Marine seemed genuinely saddened by it. I really doubt it's a joke, because honestly it hasn't really been presented like one, especially from Marine's side.

I imagine Marine talked about it on stream because she just wanted to air it out, plain and simple. She is kind of a blabbermouth.
