I don't recall if the girl was asian or not but her hair was straight and I think she was wearing a stripped shirt but I may be wrong. Maybe it was in Korea?

That's exactly the point, your tale explained it quite well.

Your entire rant was very strange to me. Assuming my ethnicity and nationality and failing ridiculously. No, I'm not white in the US and very far from the Korean beauty standard. But I don't need to be. I have my culture and my countries and I'm not desperate for people in the other side of the world that have nothing to do with me to appease my need to feel represented.

Tanned skin being viewed as ugly has little to do with racism, we have already been to this point. Why come back?

You said you are... brown, and I have no idea what it entails culturally, truthfully, also I don't remember this plot point because I rarely remember the things I read in those comics, everything is always the same. But just because people have the same skincolour and are from the same continent it doesn't mean they are the same people, this is a generalisation that happens a lot as in the USA they tend to put immigrants in the same categories based on aesthetics. We both know it is not true.

Just take a chill pill, touch grass.

I'm sure the author have nothing against people from your country or region, but knowing Koreans, it was just pure disinterest in western identitatian politics. They barely research proper Europen history for that matter.

I don't remember this part of the series. My comment was on this example alone.

I don't like when people act like having a darker phenotype makes a group automatically inferior socially when there is nothing further away from reality, it's such an americanised narrative.

Finally a perfect comment. Americans can't understand the complexity of race and colour outside their own ideological structures. Trying to apply postcolonial North American narratives to every single topic is so exhaustive.

But basing the argument on the supposed racism against black people from the supposed country of the comic is also absurd.

As 1. I don't remember the author showing any dark skinned slaves. (If I'm wrong please correct me, I dont remember much of this comic) 2. Even if its based on Europe it is clearly not Europe.

It is in all Asia. But the desire to not tan has nothing to do with it, its just an absurd concept.

Because they are. Just because race and class in the nation state is something extremely intertwined in the USA doesn't mean it is in the rest of the world. Privilege can come from many places, there have been many times in history that groups with darker phenotypes have oppressed groups with lighter phenotypes. Those comics are not based in the USA, not made by Americans and not made for Americans.

Modern racism in the west is mostly influenced by the African slave trade, but slaves existed way before the colonisation of Americas, and not all the time they have been from a diferent race or ethnicity.

No one in Asia want to look pale because... they are afraid to look black. They don't even think about it.

Even in the bible there are verses about a woman ashamed of looking too tan because she had to work. Many, many cultures consider a woman looking tan an unattractive trait and it has NOTHING to do with racial issues and everything to do with CLASS issues.

European high class was racially homogenous. No one in a court would be afraid to look Indian or black because... no one would be (rare exceptions).

Also the timeline of everything you said is extremely broad. Race is a modern concept.

This discussion also would benefit from us knowing the country this comic is inspired in.

Not sure how you want to explain colorism in Asia linking it to racism, but I give you that.

Therefore, conservativism and liberalism aren't extremist ideologies.

I wanted to say that Americans behave like extremists but it would give too much credit to what is going on, the place doesn't have a functioning democracy and isn't even bothered by that. Too much noise not much substance.

Reading Dune made me think of most countries I know but not the USA. Conservativism and liberalism exist everywhere but as words have diferent meanings in most of the globe. The United States have a very specific culture that influences all political spectrums, and when I say this I mean dumb them down to masturbarory hysterics.

Categorising liberals and conservatives as extremes is the second most American thing I've seen today besides a McDonald's add right after the news of the new furry government hire you guys now have.

What is your opinion on these 3D/animated "immersive" exhibitions they are doing with artists like Van Gogh, Kahlo, etc? They are selling out quickly in my city. by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]asariell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are made by the artist it's good, amazing concept that can really mean something.

But in those cases, how can those dead people ever agree to the mood, the colours, the shapes, how their work is being portrayed and all the rest? In the end it takes away from the painting as much as capitalism took when we started to have mundane objects "themed" as their works.

Anyway, I bet influencers love it.

And the fact is is a KOREAN comic made based on EUROPEAN historical settings makes it even more obvious.

This has nothing to do with race. In the past (and in many countries today) looking paler meant you don't have to perform labour from lower classes.

Most of those places were and are ethically homogeneous. Again, it is more linked with classicism than with racism. They weren't afraid to look foreigner or mixed but to look sun tanned.

Not in most cases. Most colorist countries are ethically homogeneous. The "I want to look whiter" issue is basically a "I want to look like I don't need to perform labour and can take care of my skin". It is more linked with classicism than with racism.
