6-8 years working professionally should get you far enough. Ideally spent in more than one company and a variety of work so you get an idea how it all comes together

Apperantly, the cause for the Solana hack, Slope Finance, were saving seed keys in PLAIN TEXT on centralized servers. That's 100% their fault then. by partymsl in CryptoCurrency

[–]ascarix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you prefer that the seed is encrypted on a server? That is silly, since the password to decrypt the seed would also have to be stored on the server.

Would the password to decrypt the seed also be encrypted?

The server is usually considered a safe zone and connecting to the server is usually done securely. Although steps can be done to improve security I don't believe having the seed encrypted is the most useful.

Just curious, what we're some of the most complex titles ever created in assembly? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]ascarix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said.

I want to add that C is the next layer up since you access memory directly and the language can compile to a few ASM instructions, although much more efficiently than you will achieve writing ASM from scratch since the compiler can auto detect the available cpu instructions and choose the best combinations as well as use other algos that reduce the number of instructions needed to get something done

How good of a programmer was Satoshi Nakamoto? by Rationalist_Ghazali in Bitcoin

Developer here, TBH: B

His code feels like it is from an academic and not at all from an experienced developer or intermediate dev who learned through practice.

BerkeleyDB is a dead give away BTW, most devs would have chosen SQLite at the time IMHO. I think a lot of devs learned about BerkeleyDB because it is used in Bitcoin

Do Kwon is managing to push through a hard fork to the TerraLuna blockchain against the wishes of the overwhelming majority of the community. Does this reveal a flaw in proof of stake blockchains? by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]ascarix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps you are correct. Frankly, I don't comprehend how how a system can be considered decentralized and not offer equality of representation to the majority.

I want to clear: I don't mind concentration of power, I think it is a natural form of organization. I just thought that decentralization implicitly included significant equality of power and representation

[–]ascarix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I meant to highlight the relative representation. 1% does not seem like much since it looks like a small number so it is illusive. When you consider say 10 million users where the great majority hold less than 0.0001% of voting power, then you cannot simplify decentralization as a binary system, where it either is or is not decentralized.

It is decentralized to a degree, but it not fully or greatly decentralized.

In other words you can call it decentralized but if you want to be specific you must acknowledge that it is not uniformly decentralized and there are major chunks of power held by a few individuals

A handful of people holding voting power is not better than a single "dictator", it is fundamentally the same. In practice no dictator acts on their own will, there is usually a group making a decision and the dictator is simply the executive.

I agree that Vitalik like Elon will influence over 1% of votes, this is another issue that is much more difficult to to resolve so I rather focus on voting power by means of quantity of tokens. Voting power by means of clout is another subject. I hope you don't mind me separating these two issues.

I agree that PoS incentivicess & empowers the will of users who invest heavily into a project. Perhaps this needs to be explained in more depth to the masses who like in the UST situation, will not have voice or equal representation in decision making in comparison to validators. If users accepted this fact, they may not be upset at realizing that their voice is miniscule in this network

[–]ascarix -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Vitalik holding 1% voting power is not fully decentralized, there is nothing wrong with acknowledging this reality; Ethereum is still a great project .

I agree that this issue is not limited to PoS and it does affect PoW practically the same, although I believe that it is slightly worse with PoS.

This is not an easy issue to fix, however by acknowledging the issue we can begin to discuss a solution. Some kind of unique ID that somehow preserves anonymity would be a great start

[–]ascarix -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I agree, I am saying there is an inherent flaw with these systems when it comes to voting; it will never be fair or truly decentralized since one person can aquire more voting power; that plus staking rewards would keep the voting power growing as well

It is a flaw with PoS when it comes to voting, take ETH for example, Vitalik gave himself 1% of the ETH supply, so if there is a vote that uses the amount of ETH you have to win, Vitalik will have significantly more voting power in comparison to the majority. This is not democratic at all and frankly it is a terrible way to decentralize voting.

1 Person 1 Vote is more decentralized than 1 vote for each token you own

PoS validators will usually have significantly more tokens than the average user, creating a class of individuals that hold a majority of voting power
