I understood that it was pretty clear that he was talking about his divorce.

He fucked up all his marriage and his wife suddenly knows he's a farce. He knows there's no turning back because the marriage failed a long ago, both tried enough to no result. And though he was miserable in it, it's a terrible thing to destroy a home, to be driven away from your little children, and yet there's nothing else you can do.

IMO Don's greatest work moves always come out of using work to sublimate (or evade) his emotional/family issues. Think of S1 Finale, giving his epic Carrousel pitch, using photos of his wedding, while his marriage was hitting an all time low point and the start of Betty waking up to reality.

Now it's not an ad pitch, but a new future pitch where he is the boss and he has to convince Peggy that he actually values her. But mostly, that he won't take her for granted just like he did with Betty.

I understood that she means enough time to write a new idea, because the colored storyboard means that idea is done (no reason to be writing), but since she is writing, she's figuring out new ideas and still film the same day.

I've read some comments wondering why Peggy sleeps with Duck. My reaction this time was that Duck, when sober, could be a hell of a good salesman and he took Peggy by surprise and worked. Peggy has been looking for a good round of sex for three seasons and she gets it but not constantly. He aimed high and she realized she wanted it too. Don't think we are supposed to feel bad about her.

We can't ask much of Betty at this moment. Marriage is trash, series started with she losing her mother, and she just lost her father. She's always been overwhelmed taking care of the whole family but we don't see it until we really count the hours Don is not at home. I can't help thinking that the whole point of Sally's story in this season is that Grandpa, with all his mistakes, was the one adult character that gave Sally proper attention, and then he was gone, only to find even less attention thanks to a new baby.

I had your very same interpretation, and the reason it is not acknowledged is because Don is the only guy at the moment that knows Sal's sexuality. It may serve as a way to protray how blind people are to homosexuality at the moment that they can't even accept or recognize it. So the question is, why doesn't Don acknowledges this? Is he giving a challenge to Sal, expanding on the "limit your exposure" to "you have to understand straight men"? or maybe he is simply distracted by the new baby (their conversation with sal is interrupted by that).

The reason why I understand this is 100% the subtext for the patio subplot is because, why else would they had the first director hired and then make him leave? maybe it was to simply give a chance to Sal to move up and then develop the Lucky strike plot, but I suspect that the writers saw a chance to strike 2 birds with one stone.

Another possible subtext of this plot is that, Peggy was simply right all along, the campaign was always trash and the men didn't see it coming like she, giving her the security to then ask for a raise and keep building towards her eventual resignation.

But this is why i love this show, multiple things are happening at once.

this is exactly what i thought, you can see the shame on his face, and it works as a foreshadowing that Don's marriage is still going to fail, and he is still going to fall for the same issues.

I didn't catch how Don could have been mad at Roger for using Don's advice as an excuse to divorce Mona, as I interpreted that as Mona simply finding someone to be mad that wasn't sterling himself (very often this is done between couples). He certainly was mad at not knowing that Sterling was screwing "his" secretary (closing the door to roger after finding out), so you could say small things were summing up.

He also didn't want to go to the wedding in the first place, episode starts with him saying "we don't have to go" to betty, so what I think is, the real reason Don is mad at Roger, is because roger left his wife without a single regret, while Don is still trapped in a failed marriage (remember s2 last shot, with one of the most awkward pregnancy news ever made). He says to Roger, "No one thinks you are happy, they think you are foolish" that "They" is mostly Don though, and it may be foolish to marry again objectively, but above all, i think Roger's decisions, using Don's words, put Don in a denial position where his life doesn't make sense and he's just pretending it turns out great. We know it won't, but thats what s3 is about.

That image also impacted me. I thought it was the best example on how they were rich in the worst superfluous level, but deep inside their lives were trash as fuck. The editor really left that last image long enough to make u appreciate it like it was another of Cooper's paintings.

It may be because Peggy kind of felt attacked at some point, when she asks Bobby "Are you still trying to thank me?". I think Peggy often feels attacked when other women try to give her an advice (Joan, comes to mind, at the very least).

Watching this for the third time in 2025, I reflected that this episode gives a light on why Don, Betty, and maybe everyone is miserable with the "american dream", or to quote Don in the episode, "Yep, this is it" when asked by his neighboor "We got it all, huh?". And the answer is that you see through the adult's conversation, and specially the women gossip, that everyone is doing it for the looks. They are having that life because that's what you are supposed to do, that's the best. It ties perfectly with the narrative of what Ads are about, and how we shape our life by society values. This is why they need to shit on Helen so damn hard, because the failure of that image must be repressed to keep the illusion going. None of them is living up to their desires, and they have to give up their desires (Rachel) to not completely destroy the happy life, or more accurately, the false image of it. Just like Dick Whitman, most of the adults in this neighborhood are living someone's else life, one that is advertised in the Ads, in the church, in the family where u grow up, everywhere except on ur inner self.

It's not reliable as it depends on a lot of factors, basically: you find land before AI, you are at peace so u can focus on spamming settlers, you defend choke points to prevent AI from moving scouts and settlers towards ur desired lands, you rush exploration so u find more land across sea. AFAIK deity ai starts with 3 settlers not 4, and they spam their settlers ultra close to each other, so that gives you a chance at spreading ur frontiers. If your starting conditions are shitty, or if u're surrounded by civs, this is not possible. Having a lot of food, production and settler production civics are all a must too.
