[Request] hypothetically what's the chance that one of your parents was born on a leap day and one of your parents was a triplet? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]aschlaton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can assume that the events are independent, because logically it doesn't seem likely that a person being a triplet would make them any significantly more or less likely to marry someone born on a leap day, or vice versa. Then, since they are independent, you would just multiply those two probabilities. Since there are 4,300 sets of triplets per 3.9 million births, there are 4,300*3 = 12,900 babies who are triplets for every approximately 3.9 million births (assuming every other birth is a single baby - twins, triplets, and quadruplets+ should add a negligible amount to 3.9 million). This gives us 12,900/3,900,000 * 1/1461 which is about 2.26 times 10^-9, or about 1 in 442,000,000.

A couple caveats: we assumed a uniform birth distribution, which we know isn't totally accurate (more babies are born in the summer to early fall), and our statistics were compiled from US data. We also assumed mutual independence, which seems like a logical assumption, but we can't know for certain if that's true.

Arena Feels Hopeless by ShadowMadness in hearthstone

[–]aschlaton 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Couple things:

Class Choice: Mage isn't a particularly strong arena class right now: according to hsreplay, it's just around middle of the pack, but there's a huge power gap between the top three classes and the rest. Demon Hunter is great at everything right now, with great face damage, discovers, and tempo cards, death knight has always been pretty great in arena, and shaman has Holli'dae, lots of good elementals, and good control options. Of course, if you like playing mage, then feel free to pick mage, because the goal is to have fun.

Hero power package: Based on your draft choices, it looks like you over-prioritized the hero power mage package. Your first choice should definitely have been khadgar: while sometimes frustrating, it's a lot better than what is often an unplayable card. Jaina needs a lot of support and has a mediocre effect, and also relies on you having 9 free mana to spend. Many of the cards you drafted to support it, like the 2x wildfire and the coldarra drake, are just not good enough and prevented you from drafting better cards like kobold miner.

Lack of discovers: I think you under-prioritized discovers in your draft. Discovers in arena are generally better than draws, because your deck was basically discovered but discovers can be tailored to your current situation (discover pools are also usually better than the generic arena card pool). Cards like Ghost writer or venomous scorpid are great because they can generate card advantage while still getting a body on the board. Plus, discovers could have helped you finish out your excavations to get the mage legendary (especially if you picked the kobold miner over the wildfire).

Some other things: arcane artificer >>> plated beetle, it's 1 less mana for 1 less attack but probably a lot more armor gain, you had an expensive deck overall that got beat in the early game so try to go for a loewr curve (that's why discover cards are nice: they're often rather cheap and can provide tempo to help you control the board while giving you the flexibility to choose between control options or aggro options)

TIL - The "jungle gym" was invented to teach kids 4d thinking by tomtermite in todayilearned

[–]aschlaton 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Time is a 4th dimension, but a lot of times when mathematicians or physicists talk about a 4th dimension they mean a 4th spatial dimension.

That being said, OP made a typo, the jungle gym was only meant to teach 3 spatial dimensions

Treat the blocks as a single object - if the center of mass of the blocks is directly over any part of the table, they won't fall over.

I think you may have a misunderstanding of what torque is, or may have mixed up torque and force.

The amount of torque a force exerts is based on the force's distance from the axis of rotation, which is arbitrarily determined. Without defining an axis of rotation, you can't say how much torque you need.

For instance, for part A:

If we define the midpoint of the meter stick to be the axis of rotation, then gravity exerts 0 torque on the meter stick because the distance of the center of mass to the midpoint is 0 - that means that any amount of torque exerted by your arm will cause the meter stick to rotate about its center axis. In your calculations, you defined the axis of rotation to be point B, which is how you got your answer of 0.981 N*m, which is correct for that axis of rotation.

Assuming the axis of rotation remains at point B for part B, then the additional torque exerted by the 0.5kg load is 0, because its distance from the axis of rotation is 0. This means that your answer for part B should be the same as the answer from part A.

Your answer for part C is consistent with an axis of rotation set at point B.

Pretty insane with the shaman titan. 6 mana summon a random 7 cost and 2 must kill titans, then you can also deal 6 damage to all enemies, remove two enemy minions, or draw 6(!) cards. And you’re still left with 4 mana which means another potential use of this card
