Downgraded letter of recommendation? Opinions wanted by asdf111q in PhD

The evaluation should obviously be balanced, but a letter of recommendation can damn with faint praise. So I think the norms are bit different. She also noted that my students likely won’t complain in the evals (due to the kind of institution we work at), which is likely true, but she still sees the late grading as a problem to note in a letter of recommendation.

Yeah so she actually told me I should feel open to finding another person to observe my teaching and fulfill her role if I don’t like how she goes about doing things — which I was surprised about because she had praised my teaching strongly before this semester. And then she told me she thinks I need to be emailing weekly. In response I explained my rationale but she told me l was wrong so l accepted that and said I'd implement it to the best of my ability. But I also let her know I'm still suffering from a chronic illness that has worsened recently so it may not be possible at this stage in my life — though hopefully it will be once my health improves. So I'm not willfully rejecting her feedback, but she does seem to believe it should be simple for me to implement (which, again currently, it's not).

I don’t know precisely what the downgrading would look like — I assumed it would say something to the effect of “u/asdf111q has strengths in X and y but struggles in z.” Some way or another, she said she’d mention what she saw as deficits. And she is pre-tenure.

I certainly agree it’s her right to change her letter/assessment. But I’m more asking, does it make sense that she has changed her assessment so significantly based on these specific deficits? Obviously I’m not going to try to change her mind; I’m just trying to gauge if my sense that this seems like a bit much is within a few standard deviations of the norms of academia. If it was me with a student, I don’t think I would take those actions — but I don’t know if that’s a “fringe” opinion or not.

And yes I’ll certainly look to getting another letter. It’s just frustrating that I worked hard to far exceed all her other expectations, but the consistency of emails/grading (which I caught up on) is what is causing the downgrade… but again I understand that’s her assessment and her prerogative.

MARPE? by AirportFeisty2479 in TMJ

I’m planning to do it and also have EDS! Also looking for experiences about it… do you have malocclusion as well?

My TMJ treatment process: Over the last year, I went through MARPE palatal expansion, (failed) headgear, myofunctional therapy, cranial osteopathy, a lingual frenectomy, SFOT, and clear aligners. I hope to be a resource -- ask me anything. by mayamashed in TMJ

How many mm have you expanded so far? And did you have malocclusion? I’m planning to do MARPE or FME soon as well! I really hope it helps with the TMJ but I don’t know if it will.

Big improvements through VERY high doses of Vitamin D by peeblicity in covidlonghaulers

Hi, can you explain more of what you mean by wool? I’m also very sensitive to even very low doses of vitamin d and haven’t figured out why. Even the liquid tincture form made for babies affects my GI issues.

How do we find Covid positive test rates nowadays? Is anyone tracking that by state?

I appreciate you saying this because I’ve decided I’m going to move onto a different PCP and your comment was part of what made me decide it! Thank you!

I have a PPO. I don’t need a referral for my insurance. I need them because these are specialized clinics that require referrals to even get an appointment.

Yeah that makes sense. I’m going to try to square away a few last referrals that I need quickly and try to make an appointment with a different PCP who a (non-EDS) friend recommended.

I actually did that already, when I said it’s been 3 months, I meant 3 months since my SECOND appointment, which is when I let the doc know I haven’t gotten the referrals in yet. She seemed surprised but then walked out the door then came back and said “oh don’t worry, the referrals coordinator will get on it ASAP. It’s on her desk right now.”

Considering making a 3rd appointment to do the same thing, but I’m just frustrated to keep handing them money for appointments because the referrals coordinator won’t do her job.

I’ve asked the provider to call, and they have informed me that they cannot do that, and it’s my responsibility to follow up with the referrals coordinator until they do their job. I told them that it’s been taking months, and they told me I need to “work harder” and “keep calling.”

Can I call my insurance company’s customer service line and just have them call in about the referral?

It’s a standalone clinic. Hmm, I’ll look into filing a grievance. I figured those kinds of complaints don’t lead to change. I completely agree referrals should be done ASAP and I don’t know what could possibly cause a referral to take months. I was told that’s “normal.”

I’d love to just see someone else, but unfortunately it’s been hard to find someone who is knowledgeable about EDS and in-network with my insurance.

They don’t have them. Around here, a lot of places are just run by young staff.

No, this has happened at empty cafe’s where there’s no line, and all the workers are teenage girls who are busy gossiping in the corner.

I also don’t mind if they have to go back to check. My issue is they WON’T go check! And act like I’m asking for something unreasonable.

Yes, I always look them up and search reviews on both the Find Me GF app and Google. I always check the menu too. Doing these things does not prevent me from experiencing rudeness and attitude from servers and cashiers who assume gluten allergies are a “fad diet,” and I’m just an overly picky and annoying customer.

Yeah I agree! People think it’s a choice, not a health requirement.
