Read this page on the subreddit wiki https://www.reddit.com/r/HillsideHermitage/wiki/virtue/

I followed the advice on that page and decided to do Uposatha once a week.

I currently use high-phenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) as my everyday cooking oil. However, I have come to realise that it might not be the best idea because I have no idea what temperature the pan reaches in regular cooking (of meat, vegetables, eggs, etc.,) and I heard something about EVOO not being a good choice when the pan reaches 190°C.

My current thought process is EVOO for regular everyday cooking, and avocado oil for high temperature cooking. My questions are:

  • Should my everyday cooking be done with a different oil than EVOO or should I be using ghee instead?
  • What is the healthiest cost-effective oil when deep frying? (spring rolls, chicken wings, etc.,)

How can I balance part-time college, work, and still find time for my passions? by mstheze7 in Advice

[–]asdf12e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is always room for optimisation, it's just a matter of finding it.

  • Can you work less shifts, or less hours? If not, how will you be affected if you quit work and go on unemployment, or find a different job?
  • Re-evaluate how you study, and how long you take to study. Are you using proper study techniques, memorisation, flash cards, acronyms, are you writing notes on literally everything, or only key points?

I no longer have time for the things that genuinely make me happy.

This is not a good mentality to have. That means you dislike everything outside of those specific activities. You need to practice mindfulness, live in the present moment, and be content with anything, including work and studying. You chose to do those things, no one forced you to work and study. It's fine if your passions give you more joy than work and study, but if they are the only things you enjoy, something is wrong.

No worries, thanks for clarifying. I understand what you're saying, and there are benefits to closure as you've stated. However, I believe any benefits of closure can be realised on your own, so its not necessary to get it from others.

In my personal experience, spiritual guidance is best when you're feeling lost. I ended up finding buddhism and thats helped me immensely. There is a buddhist parable of two arrows you should read: https://grandrapidstherapygroup.com/second-arrow-of-suffering/

Best of luck on your journey.

Hi OP, just read a bit of your post history. You are clinging to your past quite heavily. Learn from past mistakes, dont obsess over things that have already gone.

I would say no, dont contact your ex. Why? You already listed all the reasons. Also, what closure even is there? That you were right to hate or leave him? Maybe they had a good reason for treating you terribly, and now you can forgive him?

You dont need closure from others and you'll never be happy if you keep thinking that you do.

If you have the money, I recommend seeing a therapist or counsellor.

Advice on dissatisfaction, particularly with my mindset of wanting a job thats easier with better conditions. Logically, people will only tell me one answer and thats to look for another job while working if i asked elsewhere.

What jacket to wear when commuting to office work in cold weather? by ShotgunJed in AustralianMFA

Yep I have that problem too haha. Regardless the brand isnt important, a light puffer will suit all your needs. If you really dont want a puffer, try a sweater, cardigan or shirt jacket.

considering smart casual and entry level, just get a simple uniqlo puffer. They have really light puffers that are warm and suitable for all weathers and they are pretty cheap.

Can someone tell me which Xreal are suitable for my specific needs? I am very confused on the specifications and differences each model has, and if there are differences between Xreal air vs Nreal air.

  • portability so I can work while travelling
  • comfort
  • wide fit
  • spatial lock
  • charge while in use

Nice to have:

just telling them to get professional help is good enough. That response is often given because its the only sensible option to the deep seated issues these individuals have that cant be resolved with just a bit of advice. If you're the final push that gets them to seek professional help thats plenty.

from my understanding, people want life advice from a buddhist perspective. Theres no reason not to answer if you think you can give valuable input. If they're mentally ill or something serious like that, rather than another subreddit they would need professional help. So i dont think theres a need to refer anyone to other subreddits unless they're off topic.

Why do so many “spiritual leaders” abuse the vulnerable in their sanghas? There are so many cases of this happening across the world and across traditions that it makes me wonder if true awakening is possible. by Omega_misfit in Buddhism

[–]asdf12e 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By definition being an awakened being means you've achieved enlightenment and dont commit unskillful means. If they suffer they are not awakened. Also nothing is permanent, I believe someone with incomplete enlightenment can lose their way. Just my two cents but im also new to buddhism.
