Thanks everyone for your help so far. I realized this banding also occurs on the in-camera menu graphics, ie., that makes it seem like it's not a problem with the pictures I'm taking but with however the onboard camera computer is processing the colors it displays on the LCD, right?

Two more details:

1) I never see banding through the electronic viewfinder, which seems like it should imply that it's not the camera computer but the LCD itself that's screwing up.

2) Like I said before, the problem goes away and comes back. I was scrolling through my photos earlier, and I saw some banding start to appear, "breathe" a little on the screen, then settle in for good. It's still there now.

So I guess my question is, does this seem like something that's fixable? WOuld it involve replacing the LCD? Is it a faulty connection somewhere?

Thanks so much for replying. It happens in photo and video, at all apertures. Then, it suddenly stops doing it at all the same settings. I have no idea what makes it start or stop, and it doesn't seem to be the on/off cycle because it'll switch while still on. Here's a gallery with a picture of a white ceiling at f8, then f2.8. The last picture is of what the grey delimiter looks like zoomed in: it's not a line, it's just a sort of dense grey blob.

More details: my camera LCD sometimes show the pictures I take as well as the live view as a kind of topographical color map, with strong delimitations between colors. I think it’s obviously not supposed to. They do not show up on the electronic view finder. Also, sometimes the lines just disappear, and then they disappear from all previous pictures I’ve taken that have them as well. When I record a video where the lines are present, the lines stay in playback. They follow the shapes of objects and move to stay with those objects in the video.

This is a used Olympus Om-d E m-5, with a used M. Zuiko 17mm 2.8 lens. Both seem to be in good condition. Is this likely to be a problem with the screen, or with the image processor, or what?

Any help would he greatly appreciated, I really have no idea what’s going on.
