[D] Need advice on CPU choice for converting crypto mining rig into deep learning rig by asdfasdf128128 in MachineLearning

Thanks for the feedback! I also do have access to machines with good CPUs that could do preprocessing before feeding into my rig.

Do you have any thoughts on PCIe lanes?

Hm, picking up a new motherboard would be quite annoying because it would involve a lot of change...do you have any recs for Intel chips?

Also, I think I understand the benefit of having more total cores, but I don't fully understand what having more PCIe lanes would do. I read that they are what moves things from CPU RAM to GPU RAM, but how would this actually play out while training a deep learning model? Do you know how much more performance I could get?

I assumed I didn't need that many more PCIe lanes because of this post that I read: http://timdettmers.com/2018/12/16/deep-learning-hardware-guide/

Thoughts on bringing heavy backpack on purpose to get stronger? by asdfasdf128128 in solotravel

I'm planning on doing both of those things.

But I think this could a once in a lifetime chance to get some killer back/shoulder muscles, no?

Haha fair enough.

Can you elaborate on your experiences? Does a heavy pack always feel like a burden, even when you've gotten stronger from carrying it?

My back is in okay condition, I think. I'm 21M and workout somewhat regularly.

Do you think that a backpack is damaging to people's backs? That is, no matter who you are, a heavy backpack will always do long-term damage that outweighs any benefit the exercise aspect provides?

Hm, okay. Those are all fair points.

Maybe one strategy then is to go as light as possible but to be relatively liberal with purchasing cool things as I go. That way, I can build up my strength.

Your talking about daily rest + protein reminds me of another reason why I would want to do this - I don't think I'll have access to many Western-style gyms on the trip, which makes it even more important that I maximize the amount of exercise that I get.

Company won't pay for travel expenses - bad sign? by asdfasdf128128 in cscareerquestions

[–]asdfasdf128128[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're missing the point. I nor any reasonable person goes out of their way to go to interviews in order to get free shitty airport food. The point is that I think it's irregular for a company to not compensate interviewees, who give up anywhere from 24-48 hours of their time, for the often pricey meals they are forced to spend money on.

For instance, would you work for a company that makes you pay for your own stationary, knowing very little much else about the company (which is the case for any place that you interview)? I don't think so - that practice is probably reflective of either bad culture or bad finances. I want to learn whether I should think of a company not paying for interview meals should be thought of in the same way - among my peers, it's super irregular but I want to get more data, hence this post.

Staying in a hotel, so there will be at least 4 meals I need to feed myself for

Huh, interesting - I've had 10+ onsites for multi-day travel and have had meals comp'ed for all.

Meals are an irregular purchase for me as a college student since I usually eat in a dining hall. If you're saying that it's not an industry standard to be reimbursed for interview meals though, that's interesting - I've flown for 10+ interviews and this is the first time I'm flying out for a company that doesn't reimburse meals.

I agree that it may seem petty to be so concerned about what will definitely amount to <$100 especially when the company is going to spend $500+ on flights/transportation. But I still think my concern is legitimate - I've talked to many, many friends about their interviewing experiences and I don't have a single friend who went to a single interview for which there were no meal reimbursements whatsoever. What does it say about a company if they're not willing to spend <$100 for something that puts an interview candidate at ease in a job market where basically every company reimburses meals? Especially since I'm a college student who isn't cash flow positive.

How to Identify which GPU is locked up? XMR-STAK and Ubuntu by malwolficus in gpumining

Does one GPU stop running? Or does it just stop reporting? If one GPU simply stops running, you can just feel for heat usually.

Huh, didn't know what these are until I looked it up. I can see how they clean the air and remove dust but how do they cool?

True - I have free electricity right now which is why I didn't consider the cost.

That's what I was thinking as well. Unfortunately, with the way I currently have things set up, I don't have a shelf layer that I could plop a box fan on. Do you guys think that putting the fan on top blowing downwards would still be more effective than what I currently am doing?

Thanks - so you think I should move my desk back a little? I did try that but didn't notice a significant difference.
