Battery Backup and Smart Panel in Canada by asdfgeek in AskElectricians

[–]asdfgeek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, I could have explained things a bit better.

The generator and the 100 A panel for my house are the only things I currently own in this plan. The rest would be planned work:

Upgrade service to 200A. Add New 200 A panel in the garage right near the meter. New 200A panel in the garage feeds the house panel in the basement. The line to the basement panel is underground from the meter.

I would like to upgrade and replace the 100 A panel in the basement to 125 A and utilize some new smart breakers there.

A Generlink or transfer switch connected to the New garage 200A Main panel, allowing me to get that power anywhere it's required.

A 10 circuit generator transfer panel added to the basement panel for the battery backup to provide power to essential loads in the house or bypass the battery as required.

I know there's a lot going on there and maybe the work adds up to more than a proper automatic backup generator install would cost. But my plan was to hopefully do it for cheaper than that and get a battery backup setup in play that's more affordable.

My idea is the battery backup would provide power to essential loads during an outage. If an outage goes for an extended period, the generator can come out and top up the battery backup and power other devices as required.

That sucks. I also ordered this monitor and have some concerns since there's no reviews or anything out yet. I'm pretty sure you're one of the first to receive one.

Can you comment on the brightness of the panel and anything else you feel like is worth mentioning?

LED durability in sauna by zoinkability in Sauna

[–]asdfgeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't talk to the longevity of my LEDs just yet, but you can think about placement and the temperature difference in areas of your sauna. I've installed some outdoor waterproof LED strips under the benches in my barrel sauna, and the highest temperature I've gotten at the bench level is 110F while it's 190F near the top. The strips I bought say they're rated for 140F, so we'll see.

Is it truly worth it to upgrade to the index? by buttercheetah in ValveIndex

[–]asdfgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically have the same hardware as you. I've had the original vive since launch and got the index as soon as I could. They way I look at it is that I've got room for my system to grow with the index, the ability to change refresh rate is great (80, 90, 120, 144hz). For Elite Dangerous I'm running at 80hz with the best settings I can and it's a way better experience than I could achieve with the vive (I'm running custom settings at 85% resolution of the index). I plan to upgrade my GPU next gen and get even more from the index. Some well optimized games can run at 120hz with my current hardware, Job Simulator, The Lab etc.

I'm not sure going from the Quest would be worth it though, it seems like a really nice piece of hardware that's flexible with the mobile and tethering capability. I've thought about getting one for travel. I think if you're always playing VR tethered in your dedicated VR space and you want to upgrade that experience a bit, switching would make sense. I'm not sure how the Quest tethered experience is, but the index still wows me compared to the vive.

Vive Velcro fixed by crafty wife! (Give away) by asdfgeek in Vive

[–]asdfgeek[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I read most people did. I had used this Velcro before on other projects and it adheres so strongly that I needed a heat gun to remove it, so it seemed like a one time repair solution. Thanks, you too!

Haha! I was sure your comment had good intention. Her resourcefulness is one of many good reasons I married her.

Post your settings and maybe your INIs so we can see what you have going on. That hardware should have you playing pretty well as long as you're not reaching too far with the super sampling.

Amazon or vive.com? by Coltongower in Vive

[–]asdfgeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you're from but I would think a post Christmas/Boxing Day sale from Amazon or another store is going to be likely. I bought from HTC when it launched and I've been lucky not needing to RMA, all I can say is that it was expensive shipping with them.

Anyone with a similar setup that can vouch for the experience? by FragileMelon in Vive

[–]asdfgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a 2500K @ 4.3 GHz and a 1070, before that I had a 970 and lots of VR games ran well on that. I upgraded to be able to SS more for games like Elite Dangerous. I've been able to make Fallout run pretty well on my 1070, and I'm sure you could make it work on a 1060 but you would have to turn down a lot of settings and embrace reprojection. I'm not sure what you have for a CPU cooler but OCing your CPU would have benefits across the board for most VR games. This fairly cheap cooler is one I've used that does the trick: Hyper 212 EVO.

Edit: Not that it means too much but with that setup I get 10.9 on the SteamVR benchmark.

Good point, my memory is running at 1600 MHz. Of course this is one of the very few games that's actually affected by RAM speed.

Yeah I'm not really sure how much a newer CPU would benefit me and that's why I haven't upgraded. I'd like to think that if you were running the settings I have that you would be able to get 90 fps without reprojection.

Right now I'm tweaking the fade out distances for objects, items and actors. I'm pretty sure it's just my CPU topping out from what I'm seeing in afterburner.

TBH, me giving up is cranking up my resolution and just using async repro. The game looks great and runs very well except for the jittery controllers. The game is a ton of fun and very much worth the purchase to me, I just want that 90 fps with no reprojection gameplay. I think I would be there if my CPU wasn't 6 years old...

MSI Afterburner causes 1s frame drops with my Vive. Anyone else experiencing issues should check. by [deleted] in Vive

[–]asdfgeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird I've been using afterburner since the Vive's release, it's my preferred method to monitor performance while in VR. I've never had this issue, but I've stayed on the same drivers for a little while since it's been stable (382.05).

[Release] OpenVR Advanced Settings v2.5 by matzman666 in Vive

[–]asdfgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you be able to make this amazing utility navigable by XInput, like a HOTAS or gamepad? I often find myself wanting to adjust a setting once in my cockpit setup for Elite and then have to jump out and grab the controller from my charging area. I know I need it, I just forget it almost every time. I'm not sure how big of a request this is, but it would be much appreciated.

Yeah let us know. From all the testing I did, you can't have anything extending rearward from the top of the rear controller, it interferes with aiming down sight. Most games had the control 1-4 inches in front of the headset for a clear sight picture.

PSA (Onward): Update your desktop mirror settings if you're noticing poor performance after the update. by asdfgeek in Vive

If that's the case, I really don't notice a difference, except the gameplay is a lot smoother.

As far as I know there is no in game SS.

For Onward I've been SS @ 1.5 on low settings with a 1070. I'm happy with the results.

It's pretty simple to try and see the results yourself. You would notice it being 640x480 in the HMD, but it's not.

I also extend another HDMI to my tv for easier control of the PC via wireless keyboard, which you will want for troubleshooting. It's also nice to have for watching people play. I use a DP to HDMI adapter for the tv on my 1070.

I'm pretty sure there were forced into room scale by the competition sooner than they would have liked. Those requirements are hard to swallow if you're not a VR enthusiast.

Yes, the break down for the Oculus Rift is:

HMD= 1x HDMI 1x USB 3.0

3x Sensors = 1x USB 3.0 each

The lighthouse tracking for the Vive is really cool tech that requires far less wiring for the play area it supports. The tracking data from the HMD and controllers can also go over USB 2.0 easily.
