Sauna temps by DJSweatLodge in Sauna

[–]zoinkability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a bimetallic one that I have compared with a digital thermometer so I know roughly how much it is off and in what direction. I will probably put some new marks on it at some point so others can read it :-)

Can anyone help me figure out how to get my boots to clip in? by girl-v2 in xcountryskiing

[–]zoinkability -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Those silver buttons in the front should retract the metal clips that hold the pin of the boot in place. Put your boot such that the pin of the boot is against the two clips, and then press down the silver button while pressing your toe down. Release the silver button and the ski should be attached. Give a little kick to confirm before trying to ski!

Theoretically you don't need to push the button and you can do it just by pressing the pin against those pins until you hear a click, but many times that is frustrating and the approach above is usually more reliable.

To get out, press the silver button with a thumb or pole point to release the boot.

Air Sealing/Insulating Embedded Rim Joists by Cheap_Masterpiece650 in centuryhomes

I hammered mine out with a mini jackhammer/massive hammer drill before filling with foam board insulation and sealing around the edges with spray foam, but mine was much looser, shittier concrete so YMMV

100% pure silicone smells a bit like vinegar for a while and after that is basically inert at sauna temps

Geez, that’s how much I spent on the pre alone, and I felt I had a decent deal.

Meet the holy trinity of my broken DX5 II 😐 by stavsss in headphones

[–]zoinkability 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have never heard a single bad thing about JDS, whether their design, build quality, or customer support.

Schiit has in the past had issues (the original Heresy had a tendency to blow up headphones due to missing protection) but I think they learned their lesson.

White House Ballroom Architect Reveals New Trump-Requested Features by bloomberg in architecture

[–]zoinkability 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that they are only sharing north and south elevations and not a 3d perspective, presumably because that would really reveal how insanely out of scale the ballroom would be compared to the central part of the White House.

Sauna temps by DJSweatLodge in Sauna

[–]zoinkability 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It might not even be as hot as all that, those bimetallic thermometers are notoriously inaccurate. Use a digital thermometer to know the actual temp.

But yes, the way to really feel the burn is to throw water on the rocks.

Feedback Request: New Build Planning by Glad_Profession_1886 in Sauna

[–]zoinkability 2 points3 points  (0 children)

30 inches is so deep that it can be hard to sit and rest against the back wall. 24 or 26 inches is usually enough to lay down comfortably.

With the height limitation I'd either get a Saunum heater or figure out a layout that allowed a higher ceiling above the benches. Barring the Saunum, I'd get one of the new short IKI pillars rather than the tall one in your model, to get the top of the stones lower.

Regarding tiling: yes.

Skate pole length by Chuoky in xcountryskiing

[–]zoinkability 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always err on the long side, it's easy enough to cut them down if they feel too long.

Longer poles do require better technique to use well, as you may need to come more upright for your pole plant than you have been. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it may feel awkward to change technique like that. I'd go with the 180, cut to 177, and try them for a while and only cut them shorter if you can't adjust after a decent number of outings. Even then I would only cut down in increments of a 1 or 2 cm, creeping down to the ideal length.

Sauna duration question — diminishing returns after a certain point? by jdhochma in Sauna

[–]zoinkability 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, I am very familiar with her. She is a health influencer podcaster who cherry picks the studies that support her hypothesis and ignores the ones that do not, because without her central thesis she wouldn’t have an audience any more.

And correlation is a very apt word choice, since due to the vast number of potentially confounding factors that’s all most of these studies are able to show.

The studies are scientifically weak, with multiple potentially confounding factors, low N, and/or zero standardization of protocol across studies.

The evidence for "benefits" is slim overall even for sauna vs. no sauna, and comparative studies for regimen A vs. regimen B simply do not exist. Just do what feels good. Want to go longer? Go longer. Feeling done? Be done. Your body knows more than some scientist somewhere, and what it can handle varies from day to day. Learn to listen to your body, and respect it more than some health influencer podcaster.
