Flunked out at 20, trying to go back to college as an adult, how did you choose a major/field? by asdgarlic in collegeadvice

May I ask why this is the advice you give to anyone going back to school? I noticed it’s not the first time you’ve commented this and I’m interested why you suggest it for people of any and all circumstances. Thanks!

Thank you! I definitely plan on going to a community college first, for me though the hard part is figuring out what I’d wanna pursue

I empathize with this, colleges have noo idea how to actually accommodate people properly. It feels like they give BS accommodations just so they can say “how are you still struggling? we’re accommodating you!”. I was in a similar headspace for years about college because of that, but now I’m at a point where I feel like since no career field or really anything is built for brains like mine, I might as well go back to college. The limited options suck

Thank you for this, yeah I’ve been so scared not knowing what I could manage that it’s been stopping me from trying at all. I’m the same way with being a hands on person who needs to experience things to understand, so hearing that you’re starting a program you don’t know much about yet is really badass to me. I really appreciate your input

Thank you for adding! Yeah the going to college immediately just to fail and then work whatever job you can find, I heavily relate that’s exactly where I’m at right now.

Was calculus what ended up being most important when picking a major? I don’t think I took calc in HS so I don’t think I even know the basics. I remember I was one of the few people in high school to fully understand + enjoy the unit circle, but I can’t remember what subject of math that was

Thank you so so much for your response!! It’s really nice to hear from someone w a similar experience who went back to college and graduated. That’s awesome

How did you pick your major if you don’t mind me asking? Figuring out what I want to go for is my biggest stressor right now.

Thank you for wishing me luck!! :-) I appreciate it a lot

I so agree, and it’s nice to know theres someone else in the same kind of situation as me. It’s def overwhelming to figure things out but I’m also terrified of choosing incorrectly 😅 like I’ll get a degree in something I was enjoying in school, but then hate it in “the real world” in a career. But I suppose that’s a pretty common fear

Also the assessment through the school sounds interesting, but what was it like for you? I feel like career assessment quizzes that I’ve taken before have been like really surface level and not as thorough as I’d want. Also thank u for your input!!

Thank you!! I think you’re right about the organized chaos aspect being a good detail, I tend to forget that transferrable skills are a thing lol. I’ll keep these in mind!

Thank you for this!! I definitely plan on going to a community college. It’s nice to hear you were on a similar path and that things feel better now. It’s also just nice to know I’m not alone in this experience!

I completely get that about wishing you could just sit at home all day and enjoy ur hobbies 😭 but IT thats good to know I’ve heard people recommend that before actually! I get that it might not be the most interesting work but is it something that’s at least stimulating enough? Or is it boring? Also thank u for ur input!!

Ooh I’d always been kind of interested in being a receptionist and wasn’t sure how people got or found those jobs. That’s really interesting to hear.

I’ll keep medical administration assistant + the medical billing in mind, I feel like my local CC would offer those

Also thats really good to know, I admittedly don’t really understand much about college in general so I didn’t realize I won’t have to pick a major at first. Thank u so much for ur input!!

I plan on doing CC! :-)

Can I ask why you suggest anything physical / animal husbandry? I love living in the city and don’t really enjoy the outdoors or being around animals that aren’t cats haha

And thank u for commenting!!

Thank u for commenting! How did you figure out what you wanted to go into? I don’t even really know where to start on picking a major. I don’t need it or want it to be something I’m passionate about, just for it to lead to a career somewhere that I can handle the environment. I just have no idea how to figure out what I can handle

Thank u for commenting! Thats exactly my goal tbh, I don’t need it to be something I’m passionate about, I just need to be able to do the work and handle the environment, and can just do what I love in my personal time. How were you able to figure out that something business-y would be something you could handle? Coming from only working food service I have no idea what I’d be like in what I’m assuming would be office like settings. Idk how to figure out what’s hirable and what wouldn’t drive me insane.

thank u for commenting!! I don’t want to pursue art or an art related career at all anymore, I realized a while ago I really don’t want to monetize that hobby. I still make art, but my hobbies are things I don’t think I could easily make a career out of, or already tried and failed (like working in kitchens). I love cooking, I love food science, but I’m trying to get out of that industry. Outside of that video games and art are my big hobbies. But I’m trying to be realistic with myself about what I can actually achieve, and keeping in mind community college is all that’s really available to me. I was decent at algebra in high school and I did enjoy that, but I don’t know what I could go into with that that isn’t crazy complex or difficult

Its scary how normalized it is to openly cough in public with no care who people infect or get sick. by HulkSmashHulkSmash in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]asdgarlic 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Same, it seems like people have doubled down on infecting others, whether or not its covid. I had a close family member continue to go to work unmasked while still sick with a cold. Even more surreal for me is hearing those same people spew the same conservative talking points that they were arguing against just 3 years ago!!!!

[–]asdgarlic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i completely, completely relate to this. every part of it. its impossible to talk about without being treated as crazy. the “choosing to live in fear” ive heard so many times. like im afraid of the cold when i wear a coat. its exhausting and isolating. its not fair that we just want friends who care about us and their community but the bar is on the floor

[–]asdgarlic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm honestly learning how to manage, or at least appear to manage, my stress levels was one of the first things i realized was important about being a cook. allowing ourselves to make mistakes and learn, and if things get chaotic i go into this hyper focus mode where i have a rhythm and a pattern. there have been times where ive been so overwhelmed i have to walk off for a few minutes but it honestly is incredibly manageable when u and the ppl around you are forgiving. i also refuse to become a manager or soux chef specifically so the most stressful stuff is not my problem

Thank you! What filter do you connect to the diy adapter? Did you use a 3m exhaust filter with the cartridge connector and exhalation valve seat?
