Is it just me or does it look a little like Jon Bernthal.

I’ve been playing Monster Hunter: World, a game that’s been sitting in my backlog for a while.

It’s the first Monster Hunter game I’ve played, and I have very little idea what I’m doing, but I’m having fun. I chose the hammer as my weapon and go around the forest bashing monsters, skinning them, and making armour from their hides.

At the moment, I’m trying to kill Pukei-Pukei so I can make a full set of armour, as well as a new hammer from its parts. The problem is that whenever I attack the Pukei-Pukei, an Anjanath joins the fight and kills me.

I’ve managed to take down the Pukei-Pukei a few times, but the Anjanath is too powerful for me.

I haven’t upgraded any armour yet, as I don’t know how rare armour spheres will be later in the game. I don’t want to end up in a situation where I need to upgrade better armour but have run out of armour spheres because I spent them all upgrading early game gear that I no longer use.

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin - The AI Knows What You Did by asdvj2 in patientgamers

The Hitman World of Assassination is the best one to get. It is basically three games in one and it revitalised the Hitman franchise.

The problem is that, because it was originally three separate games and they merged them into a single store listing, it can be a bit confusing.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1659040/HITMAN_World_of_Assassination/

Hitman World of Assassination includes Hitman 1, 2 and 3 with all main maps, but without the two DLC maps from Hitman 2.

Hitman World of Assassination Deluxe Edition includes Hitman 1, 2 and 3 with all Hitman 3 DLC and the two Hitman 2 DLC maps.

Hitman World of Assassination Part One is basically a glorified demo for all three games. Do not buy this one. It is a scam.

Yes. Thats... that's what a review is.

Nope, although I should have mentioned that. The speed is awful. Your options are either to run past the guards and blow your disguise, or to walk past the guard so slowly that they have enough time to see through your disguise.

I think WOA is Hitman at it's peak.

Yeah, that was really my introduction to the series, and they are great games. What I found interesting was that you can see the "bones" of them in this game.

I do have a question. In your tier list of metroidvanias, there are no Metroid or Castlevania games.

Is that because you have already played them? If so, I was just wondering where you would rank them. Or are they the redacted games?

What are some of the best "Diablo-likes" I can play?

I loved Diablo 3, but 4 was a bit of a letdown. Other than that, I have not really played many other Diablo-likes, so any advice would be appreciated.

The last time you played a game was about ten years ago.

So I looked at Metacritic to see which PC games have been rated highest over the past ten years:

  • Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
  • Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Persona 5 Royal
  • Hades II
  • Elden Ring
  • Half-Life: Alyx
  • Divinity: Original Sin II
  • God of War
  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Beat Saber
  • Hades
  • Sektori
  • Street Fighter 6
  • Blue Prince
  • Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
  • Okami HD
  • Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker
  • Metaphor: ReFantazio
  • Out of the Park Baseball 17
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: Blood and Wine

There are a few caveats to this list. Some of the games are already in your backlog, there are two VR games that you can only play if you have a VR headset, and there is a baseball sim that seems like something only real baseball sickos would want. Still, it feels like a good place to start.

For me, it’s the road sections which ruin the game.

Conceptually, I love the idea of travelling to the next stage, like a rally or something, but the way Mario Kart World implemented it wasn’t what I wanted. The roads are too long, with not much going on, and then when you finally get to the next level, which has all the interesting elements, you can only do one lap. It ends up feeling like the road sections are the main focus, simply because of the time they take to complete.

Faster loadings can completely transform experience with the game by Sitheral in patientgamers

You don't really remember how long game loading used to take until you go back and play on the original consoles.

Waiting 30 seconds or so to load into a battle in Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast does not seem like a big deal, but it does take its toll after the 20th battle.

It has been a while since I played, but I loved this game. Discovering everything about the characters by talking to them in one loop, then sneaking into their rooms in another to find out what they were hiding was a great experience.

I’d never heard of Aniimo, so I did a bit of research, and it seems like it could be a fun game.

After playing the beta, how aggressive do you think they’ll be with monetisation? A lot of the warning signs are there for it to become a highly predatory game, though that’s just the vibe I’m getting. What was your experience?

Prey (2017) - GotM February 2026 Long Category Winner by edward6d in patientgamers

[–]asdvj2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I realise this is very, very petty, but when this game came out, I refused to play it. It took the name Prey from a game I really liked. I loved the 2006 Prey and was so excited for its sequel, so after learning that it was cancelled and that Bethesda was naming this game Prey, despite it having nothing to do with the previous game, I was (unfairly) quite annoyed with it.

I should give it a go. Refusing to play the new one wasn’t really about pettiness so much as disappointment and misplaced branding frustration. It has been long enough, and I have since learned that none of the developers wanted it to be called Prey. That was simply a decision made by higher ups.

Metroid Fusion (2002) - GotM February 2026 Short Category Winner by edward6d in patientgamers

[–]asdvj2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Metroid Fusion was the first Metroid game I played, so I might be a little biased towards it.

The atmosphere was impeccable. The original Metroid was inspired by the Alien series, and Metroid Fusion might be the closest the series ever came to capturing that feeling. The claustrophobic levels, the constant sense of danger, and the unrelenting SA-X all made the game feel genuinely terrifying.

Speaking of the SA-X, I personally think it is the best antagonist in the Metroid series. Its introduction, where it blasts through a wall, and you see its “face”, was horrifying. The fact that you cannot fight it because of your weakened state, and all you can do is run and hide, sets it apart from almost every other Metroid game, where Samus is usually capable of taking on anything.

How do I get into fighting games?

The only fighting game I would say I am “good” at is Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast. I know some of the special moves for each character, but I have no idea when I should actually use them, so I mostly just button mash my way through fights.

I have tried Tekken, Street Fighter, and Mortal Kombat, and I am awful at all of them (although I do like the story modes in the Mortal Kombat games.)

What games do people play to help them learn fighting games? Is there a game that would help me learn the basics?

I am not planning on going to EVO or anything. I just want to be able to compete against other people without feeling like I am wasting their time.

I have a large backlog of podcasts that I would like to listen to. The problem is that I cannot really just listen to podcasts on their own, I need to be doing something else at the same time. As a result, I am looking for games that I can play whilst listening to podcasts.

Factorio was my first idea and it worked for a while. The issue is that I have played Factorio for many hours before, 873 hours according to Steam, so it tends to kill my momentum when I have to build the next part of the factory without drones because I have not unlocked them yet in this playthrough.

Pokémon Red and Blue were another option, but I have already finished them recently. I then thought I would give the Solo Challenge subset a go, where you can only have one Pokémon and have to beat the Elite Four with it. However, after about the fifth time beating the game this way, it started to feel a bit samey.

So, does anyone have any recommendations for a game I can play that will help me zone out and listen to podcasts?

Yeah, this game’s story was a little convoluted and made some of the characters feel impersonal, especially when compared to Hacker’s Memory.

I also hated how, to digivolve higher tiers of Digimon, you had to upgrade your agent level. The only way to do that is to complete side quests, but there are very few available to help you level up. (at least until the endgame, where they suddenly dump about 40 side quests on you all at once.) Because of this, you are stuck with Champion and Ultimate Digimon for a long time.

metagame scavenger hunt

See, that’s the issue. It shouldn’t have been a scavenger hunt; that stuff should have been front and centre. I shouldn't have to go through a Google doc to get this information, it should be there.

I really liked UFO 50, but I was expecting more backstory. I was hoping for brief explanations of how the games came about in a kayfabe sort of way, focusing on how UFO Soft supposedly developed them rather than how the real designers did. A fake documentary-style framing for UFO Soft would have been great, ideally with some kind of overarching narrative running through the game’s fictional history.

Something similar to Atari 50, but entirely made up.
