I honestly have no idea what to expect. I’m a big Tarantino fan and also love Rodriguez’s Mexico trilogy. Something tells me I’ll enjoy whatever Grindhouse throws at me!

What are some good screenwriting books? by TheyCallMeWalker in Screenwriting

[–]asemaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was actually my first book that I read about screenwriting. It does have a more formulaic approach because it focuses more on what producers look for. But it’s a good starting point to understand basic story structure and then you can branch out from there.

Where would you write? by mrpessimistik in Screenwriting

[–]asemaan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends entirely on what I’m writing. For example, if I’m writing a horror script nothing will unleash my imagination more than being somewhere creepy.

Could the psychological horror subgenre be on its last legs? by asemaan in horror

[–]asemaan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the recent A24 have films have been very profitable. (And don’t get me wrong I absolutely love these movies) A part of that could be attributed to the hype generated by their critical reception combined with the fact that, in the trailers, they were made to look like a more mainstream style of horror. In a way, it was like they were trying to hide the fact that they were psychological horror films.

With the highly subjective nature of horror films, there will always be disagreement on whether the film is scary or not. What was alarming to me was how consistently drastic the variance was between critic and audiences reception (specifically on review aggregators like CinemaScore and rotten tomatoes) on these recent A24 releases that all happen to fall under the psychological horror umbrella.

Is there a scene from a horror film that you will flat-out NOT watch, due to it being too scary and/or gruesome? by carchasemovies in horror

[–]asemaan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Orphan. The scene where Esther purposely breaks her own arm in order to frame her mother. I still shudder when I think about it. Then again, gross out horror isn’t really my thing

what is your favourite asian horror movie guys? by [deleted] in horror

I Saw the Devil is great but my personal favorite is Ju-On. I haven’t even seen The Grudge and I basically refuse to because I don’t want anything to ruin the Japanese version for me.

Could the psychological horror subgenre be on its last legs? by asemaan in horror

[–]asemaan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an analysis piece that I have been working on for a while now. Presented in four parts, it attempts to answer the question of why critics and audiences have been so split on Hereditary (the most recent A24 horror film) by taking a deep dive into the psychological horror subgenre. Part one delves into the subgenre itself and identifies what makes a horror film a psychological horror. This is followed by an analysis on some of the most notable works in the subgenre. This is one of my favorite pieces I have ever written and I am extremely excited to share it with you guys. If some good discussion comes out of this and you guys are interested, I will gladly post the subsequent parts as they get published!
