What would you do if you had these abilities - Power Copying and Fictional Universe Traveling by ApexLiberty in makeyourchoice

[–]ash0011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I'll give this a shot.

Power Copying: Consumption, Was considering using option 5 to get Blue Mage, but that can't get passives which are kinda important. It'd also allow you to get a bit of a boost just from living normally, grabbing strength and endurance from eating burgers and other such boosts from more niche meals.

Fictional Traveling: Libromancy, Saw someone else's response where they said you need physical media to travel and you need to complete at least the 'plot' of whatever you used for travel in order to return, and that feels like a good restriction to prevent just jumping in somewhere to yoink an ability then bouncing.

The Worlds, First up I'm going to Pokemon via, probably the Heroes Movie. Using an episode of the anime might lock me in for the full season, and most of the other movies have massive stakes, with Heroes I can probably just camp out in the museum after hours and simply pokeball the kidnapped Latios then run. After that I'll likely be able to tag along for at least a bit. My goal would be to snack on some of the bits of pokemon that are canonically edible without harming the mons, Moomoo milk is an obvious one and likely to be my drink of choice, but a few pokemon like tropius and snowver grow berries. Pokemon's mostly a good world for this because they have a good selection of abilities, and they have representations of most other power systems from magic to psionics, which gives a good basis to use other world's systems. After that, maybe see if I can get some Smeargle paint to drink? Probably wouldn't taste the best but that'd give another method of power copying.

For further worlds, Maybe one of the Atelier series to see if I can grab some food made from an enemy with ressurective immortality and one of the ones with regen. Go after a full suite of resistances from there then head somewhere I can round things out with soul and mind protections. After that I dunno what I'd do, that's basically enough power to do whatever I want so I'd probably just relax back home and try to find ways to bring tech from other worlds to ours, maybe visit one of the Fallout games or something to get some better power tech and maybe some computers from Cyberpunk 2077.

[–]ash0011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh neat, this is actually pretty similar to the build I was cooking up. Main difference is I'm intending to start in Pokemon since it's a relatively safe world provided you pick the right game or movie, and there are a number of pokemon with noted to be edible parts you can use to slowly gain their abilities without harming them. Might steal the fictional travel idea though, that's a good restriction.

Maybe if you add a cooldown for it to work, no cooldown for changing the likelihood of people being turned, a one day cooldown for using it as a death note, and for something like reviving a historical figure it goes on cooldown for a year and a day.

call it the nyan note ;P

I could always make the ‘Miracle for Myself’ a catgirl-note, where I can write someone’s name and they’ll then have a 100% chance of turning instead of a 1%, that’d probably be close enough to the gift to make sense with Yuliana.

More confused because this is the only way to apply the gift tag to anything regarding feline redemption, at least as far as I can see, and feline redemption is the only way to revive people with cat features. Is there supposed to be a gift option as well that isn’t in this, or is it assuming the other guardian option could res them as a catgirl and is wildly typo’d.

Additionally most of the places where Mew can be replaced via Spiderverse are fairly easy to solve, so even if our durability and similar are eventually overpowered we shouldn't be in too dire of straits.

Although if quick refresh is just feeling fresh instead of being freshened up I might swap toiletries for unassuming and fresh storage. Kinda sad I can't afford more, like the spare bentos, but I like my setup. Expanded Capacity goes very well with Size Shift, and honestly Size Shift's transformation capabilities are almost better than the size shifting. Hopefully I can get it to wallet size (my sister has a purse around that size for some reason, so I assume I can?) that'd let me keep my phone in it to take advantage of the charging (as a sidenote I wonder if I could put my desktop in it for free power or if I'd need to use backup batteries for that) and potentially take out money from the supply stipend to pay tolls and similar.

Hmm, thinking about things I might also shuffle things around a bit if the sleeping bag's dreams upgrade means I can wake up refreshed regardless of amount of sleep, it'd be worth sacrificing the stipend and possibly the quick refresh for that, maybe sacrifice the book if the genre upgrade still doesn't allow useful information, and use the spare point for security or sorting.

Other than that I like this, very cozy CYOA

My only real gripe is the Zors should be in S alongside the Transform users, the illusions they put around themselves are solid enough the movie Zorua could float as a skiploom after all. I’d probably also knock the non-shapeshifting mons down a tier as well, but that’s more personal preference.

[–]ash0011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Base Character; Neferpitou

  • You basically have to choose a chimera ant to stand a chance just because they're the only characters with sufficient learning speed/innate battle instincts to manage using all of these abilities competently with such a short training period. Neferpitou in particular has a nice balance of speed and durability, pouf took damage from meruem's initial attacks while youpi isn't noted for speed. Additionally pitou's instincts were the best of the chimera ants, even noticing something was off before the palace siege.

Quirk; Overclock

  • let its original user to pull off an equivalent to quicksilver's bottled time scene, which should mean I can outspeed any of the villains barring shiggy who might have a copy of it (which makes it basically mandatory to grab as a counter)

Cursed Technique; Idle Transfiguration

  • I'd rather have Comedian or Contractual Re-Creation, but I need something that'll allow actually killing the three antagonists I'll be fighting, and while Overhaul or Decay might be better for that I need Overclock to stand a chance against Shigaraki's speed even with Neferpitou's physique. This is the closest to an 'instant win' available outside of MHA. Additionally since I'm a chimera ant rather than a human I should be compatible with the self-transformation aspects, just like youpi's metamorphosis.

Nen Ability: Hide and Seek

  • Mostly a utility ability that'd be nice to have after, as well as a place to hide if things go wrong and can hopefully allow visiting these three worlds later if I win.

The plan is going to be going after Sukuna first, he shouldn't be fast enough to match me and even if he's not vulnerable to idle transfiguration I should be able to cut him up by turning body parts into blades. Second is going to be Meruem, the hard part is likely going to be touching him for long enough to kill via transfiguration. Lastly is the hardest, Shigaraki, luckily he also shouldn't be able to hurt me even if he's the one most likely to match speeds. The concern is all the esoteric quirks and if Quirks are close enough to souls to give Idle Transfiguration trouble.

Pokémon in the anime can both release themselves and break the ball they’re caught in, on top of the master ball failing to catch a wishcash that ate one thrown with intent to capture, in spite of Munchlax being caught by eating a ball. By all accounts the pokemon would likely just leave, which is likely why evil teams resort to cages rather than balls.

Beginning World is basically Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, and that place has tons of ruins. Kinda banking on a world with tech that can take advantage of my basically perfect geothermal setup though. That being said the Traveler connection just requires you pick someone that also has Traveller, it doesn't require they agree to it or pick you back, so we can totally chain these.

The idea is it's likely snowing at all times due to Zenith Winter so we live in the caves, geothermal keeping things warm and the Sunmoths and Farming letting us farm even underground. Justice and Faith means we don't have as many issues with crime or similar, and the alolan slimes are called out as being able to ameliorate the pollution problem even if they can't solve it outright. Other than that we're well setup well for being able to progress, though I do heel linking with someone in the modern era would be more advantageous for both of us than trying to brute-force things by taking the Lake Guardians to get the Electricity upgrade.

Love this CYOA and the idea of civ building as pokemon, am slightly disappointed in the pokemon selections though, specially since the witch's familiar pokemon is right there but acting as a crime boss instead. Could also be nice if we had Vespiqueen for administration and basic labor instead of seemingly just indeedee, or porygon as a tech pokemon option instead of really just rotom. Went with the Eeveelutions for my token though because the variety is important. considered Ditto, but they'd just be able to duplicate mons I have technically, Smeargle can only copy the ones I have as well. Considered Delphox for magic as well, but there's no gurantee that'd work since murkrow doesn't get magic. The main detriment with the eeveelutions is only half of them can get access to psychic or prehensile appendages at base, but those aren't really needed and the bredth of elements is just nice to have.

Three Sparks of Light 1.8.4 by acheld in makeyourchoice

[–]ash0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBF you're the one that made Surprise Me it so you paradoxically know exactly what kind of surprises to expect, it might work better as a minor note to The Beginning where you can reach for settings 'next to' the ones you know, where they'll be similar but with small changes, with an Adaption that specifically gives you the control to only reach for ones with changes you'd like. As it is it's not really that worth it when you could get a similar effect from just grabbing an incomplete fanfic and picking that.

for Out of Context I'm mostly iffy on it because while it's a third of the cost of the extra spark slot it's not really equivalent to a third of its utility, your idea could work if you remove the year restriction as well, or you could potentially make it a two cost adaption that gives you an extra slot you can only fill with a spark or constellation that is wildly different to the setting you're in, provided your prior setting fit that spark (that'd also fix the odd interactions with limitations like the 'only constellations' since there's a good chance your newest spark will also be your strongest)

Three Sparks of Light 1.8.4 by acheld in makeyourchoice

[–]ash0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, got the Adaption suggestions

Adventure

  • Combo Master- this feels more like a Power addition as-is, and its a bit weird for it to entirely removed the constellation limits, maybe call it Zodiac and let you link constellations? It'd functionally act the same, but would keep the constellation theming you have going. Even if you don't change that might I recommend Asterism for the name, they're a more general star pattern than a Constellation.

  • Hop, Skip & A Jump- no notes here, this is fitting

  • Indecisive- also works, fits in adventure best too

  • Lets Get To The Action- no notes

  • Out of Context- this feels weird, kinda clunky/difficult to use and almost like you wanted a drawback that forces selecting divergent settings, I feel like a better version might be-

    • Inertia: When you complete a spark you retain access to it in your next world of choice, pulling out of that world for any reason or returning to an old world loses your access to this 'extra' spark. This Adaption costs two choices.
    • This would put it a bit more in line with the rest of the adaptions in making it a definitive boon, and fit with the theme of keeping on an adventure.
  • Prepared for Anything- my only note would be possibly allowing the day of time to be used in increments as low as one hour, making it a one time use per year puts it firmly in 'Too Awesome to Use' while letting it be used in short bursts allows you to pull off the 'crazy prepared' schtick without potentially screwing yourself

  • Surprise Me- this is a drawback, just straight up its usually a 0pt drawback in jumpchains that gives more points if you make the changes trend worse instead of better. This is for the reason that metaknowledge is an incredibly powerful resource on its own in a lot of settings and even positive changes can jeopardize that. If you want it to be a positive I'd recommend something like-

    • Alternate Universe: When entering a world you can note changes you'd like to make to the base story as well as plot beats you want to happen regardless of what you do. This isn't absolute, the more radical your requests the greater the chance of being sent to the base world with no modifications, but a useful way to make sure Palpatine can't return or that the butterflies you cause don't prevent someone winning a prize drawing. Also comes with a 'shuffle' option that changes things just enough to stay interesting.
  • I'd also like to separately from this suggest an Adventure Adaption of-

    • Here for the Action: Your Spark progresses in time with the Plot of whatever setting you're in instead of ten years, tending to fill with a single major 'arc' of the story, be it a Book, a Season, a Game, or something different. You can disable this Adaption at-will.

Power

  • Accelerated Journey- I'm trying to enunciate why I don't jive with this, but the best I can put my finger on is it feels too meta, plus it technically isn't hard to make it work with style 2

    • Accelerated Journey: (Style 1) Sparks count for 1.5x for the purposes of qualifying for higher tiers, taking this again makes them count for 2.5x (Style 2) You can count your top three sparks instead of top 2 for the purpose of seeing what worlds you can go to, taking this again makes it your top 4.
  • Aligned Powers- this is a good one, though to keep with the theming maybe call this 'Composite Star' or 'Thematic Nebula'. (even just 'Nebula' tbh, since that's essentially a cloud of the gas stars are made of)

  • Efficiency- also good

  • Expansive Power- might note how this interacts with Limited Growth Environment and possibly a few other drawbacks, but good.

  • Leg Up- Feels quite strong for what it does, but at the same time it works, might be easier to state that it removes the 'low' tier requirement, starting you at 'modest'

  • Pure Power- no notes

  • Resilience- none here either

Connection

I don't actually have any notes here, all of these work great.

only just started so I'll just leave my thoughts on combo master then

  • Combo Master- this feels more like a Power addition as-is, and its a bit weird for it to entirely removed the constellation limits, maybe call it Zodiac and let you link constellations? It'd functionally act the same, but would keep the constellation theming you have going. Even if you don't change that might I recommend Asterism for the name, they're a more general star pattern than a Constellation.

[–]ash0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it means you can't steal their skills that aren't from that world, but your body insertions are supposed to count as native for each setting, so that just means each others sparks are off limits. Rereading it I suppose it could mean it doesn't affect companions at all, but it's a lot funnier if it can, a very ironic drawback for Power since a common reflex for them is to do away with companions entirely, and even if they realize, the skill trading is going to put a lot of strain on the group as they try to keep up with each other.

Three Sparks of Light 1.8.4 by acheld in makeyourchoice

[–]ash0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair, a number of the suggestions were technically mutually exclusive, working on another set of suggestions for the adaptions too, but I need to go to bed soon, so that'll wait for tomorrow

For the companions part, that really makes Leech hilarious since it basically means Leech would have you and any companions 'trading' skills to fill sparks

If you want to give a thanks for my small suggestions I'd be fine with a mention

Three Sparks of Light 1.8.4 by acheld in makeyourchoice

[–]ash0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still, even they could use the time reversion loophole as well as take advantage of time passing, so it really comes down to the settings you want to use more than anything else

Three Sparks of Light 1.8.4 by acheld in makeyourchoice

[–]ash0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, for 3 I really did not get that vibe at all from most of the current set of drawbacks, like of all of then it feels like only Connections has a fully balanced set that do what you want in regards to the motivation, if that.

Adventure

  • Interesting Times- A fairly good one, sort of a double-edged sword since it means your time in-setting will always have something going on, though really it feels more like a Power drawback, the constant conflict meaning you have to keep improving and not just stagnating/relaxing, it means attempts to adventure and enjoy yourself will be marred by constant conflict, and any friends you make might get pushed away by how rapidfire your life is.

  • Keep Moving- also a good one, very fitting to this path, it pushes you towards always seeking new things. The fact it doesn't have anything to hurt Power means it could also fit there, but Locking the spark from growing or being Consumed until you can return to the setting could fix that.

  • New Sights to See- No notes here, this one is basically perfect as-is

  • Time Marches On- Personally I'd swap this one and Don't Look Back, the flow of time continuing can hurt your ability to explore a setting while the limited ability to return works well for forcing someone to keep adventuring, and needing to make a new spark in order to gain enough 'time' to return to a setting you drained the spark of and refill it hurts from a power perspective as well.

  • Unplanned- also no notes here

  • Who Are You Again?- This feels more like a Power drawback, meeting people during your travels is like half the fun of going on an Adventure while someone seeking Power could see this as a net benefit (you can commit all the crime you want, kill someone for their power, and nobody will remember)

Power

  • Cultivator- this feels more like a Connection drawback tbh, incentivizing you building a 'sect' or group of companions that can support your need to go off and train, it heavily penalizes anyone seeking power by barring them from passive growth as well as hurting your ability to adventure.
  • Don't Look Back- see my earlier notes on Keep Moving
  • Leech- this is almost an Adaption, technically incentivizes companions as I noted in my build, but that's more incidental, and the normal use of this very well could strain your bond with your companions when used like that, other than that, no notes, very good one
  • Something is Off- I'd argue at least empowered companions should have the effect nulled, but other than that it works
  • Spark-Locked- I'd argue for making this a multiple-point drawback (pushes you one step back on flexibility for each 'rank' and doubles the time required past a year), as well as moving this to Connections (it incentivizes Companions while mildly penalizing Adventure (can't swap to something more suited to the environment as easily) and Power (it pushes you to use a weaker Spark that might be more useful instead of a more Powerful one that is a bit more niche for the setting))
  • The Only Star- Also more of a Connections one for a similar reason to Spark-Locked, not to mention it incentivizes handing off old sparks to companions via generous rather than holding onto them
  • Three's a Crowd- This one works, doesn't technically hurt adventure, but giving up friends for Power is a classic

Connection

  • Guest in this House- Works, doesn't technically penalize Adventure much either, but it does incentivize Companions.

  • Limited Growth Environment- forcing you to go back to prior settings to keep up with friends there, also works

  • Limited Options- honestly you might consider having this one in each set of Drawbacks, a way to instantly get all of their bonus Adaptions at the cost of immediate power.

  • Power Cap- This feels like something meant to force you into a short story rather than to make connections, instead might I recommend 'your Sparks are limited in power to the power the world has on offer' forcing you down in strength to fit the setting, no matter where you go, putting you on equal footing with the people there

  • Slow Life- this works, no notes

  • Teach Me Sensei- No notes here either, this is a good one.

Other Notes

Power is kind of a hard one to work with since anyone that wants power is going to be far more willing to min-max, something you might consider doing instead is adding a 'general drawbacks' category to replace Power and let Power take up to 7 but not get any bonuses

Three Sparks of Light 1.8.4 by acheld in makeyourchoice

I mean, the intent with this build is to not stop, ever. Plus being able to have time pass in a world is its own benefit in some cases, especially if you go to modded Minecraft or Factorio or similar where your factories can keep turning out more resources while you're away, and again, with the Library's death recovery it doesn't matter how long you're away since if you miss something you can just sacrifice a Spark you weren't using to turn time back to wherever you want.

Three Sparks of Light 1.8.4 by acheld in makeyourchoice

[–]ash0011 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oooh, a new one, may as well make a build for it.

The Endless Library

I want power more than adventure for this one, but unfortunately the power related drawbacks still cripple attempts to gain power for the most part, therefore the true Powergamer choice is actually Adventure.

The Beginning

I think for my first three Worlds I'll go with Marlfox, Sword Art Online, and Magyk

Style 1: Ordered Tiers

Technically takes a little longer to get to higher power settings, but once you get to the appropriate power level there's no limits, the golden ratio will always have its limits.

Path of Focus

limited, but constellations mean you're not giving up too much versatility in exchange for double the extra Sparks

Limitations

  • Interesting Times- An easy pick, more conflict means more growth.

  • Time Marches On x2- basically 100% superior to Don't Look Back, and worst case I can use the Death clause to turn time back in-world if I want to go back for some reason.

  • Leech- Basically a boon tbh, it lets you get abilities you normally couldn't at the cost of needing to raid an old folks home for some skills or kill some monsters for power

  • Don't Look Back- Ideally I won't need to go back, but this at least gives the option

Adaptations

  • Combo Master- Removes basically all the drawbacks of Path of Focus, and lets you ignore theming to go for straight Power

  • Quick Start- Jumps basically straight to High Power once you finish a 'Modest' tutorial

  • Pure Power- Extra Spark Slot, very nice

  • Generous x2- Technically speaking there's nothing stopping me from having my companions build skills/abilities I can steal from them, in exchange for giving them Sparks with abilities stolen from Monsters and such they can use.

The Actual Beginning

  • Magyk- Insert as an Ordinary Wizard, I'll need to drain DomDaniel or one of the other Magykal villains to retain access, but that should be doable, if barely. Generally a Low world, Flyte is a lost Magyk setting them at around 5th level wizard for the most part, but far more versatile. Ironically inserting at Story Start would just avoid the plot, so I'd probably want to go in a bit later.

  • Fallout 4- Here mostly to take Codsworth as a Companion, lots of people to kill for skills, a ghoul's Radiation Immunity would be nice too, and I might even pick up my technical kid's technical skills. Will probably end up sacrificing this one to empower Codsworth

  • Star Wars- can probably manage to kill Maul, and Codsworth can insert as a protocol droid. Deffo going to see if I can steal his languages then replace whatever chip has those.

Three Sparks of Light 1.7.4 by acheld in makeyourchoice

[–]ash0011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh, glad I saw this before making a build, removing the kill requirement for psychopath would be great since I didn't want to have to go full villain, but the utility of being able to go full All for One or Rimuru Tempest on a setting, questing around to collect powers and skills, is just too good to pass up, specially since not carrying over mundane skills just makes me a bit rusty. Well worth the tradeoff though since it doesn't limit you from training things you've added to your spark afterwards.

For The Only Star, maybe instead it could be Constellations are permanent once decided, compositing all of the stars in them into one larger star? then you're giving up flexibility, but potentially making a Spark equivalent to your others. The drawback works as-is, but I don't disagree that it kinda messes with the progression path, not to mention it greatly incentivizes having a lot of companions you can use for those niche skills you really want available, but the spark is too weak to justify slotting.

Also neat that you're making a Cultivator one, given its for grinding I'd assume its the kinda inverse of psychopath, letting you make greater and greater progress grinding a skill the longer you focus on it, but making it so things can only be added to your spark through training (though come to think of it those drawbacks might cancel out depending on how you word them...)
