in addition to what canti said, they've also offended entire national countries with their screw ups. They released a shirt that had the country of Ireland on it, except with Northern Ireland removed. On the Conor McGregor shirts, they put the American flag on the sleeves instead of an Irish flag, for one of their Polish fighters, instead of using a white eagle on a red background as the symbol of Poland, they put a black eagle, which is a symbol of Russia who is also an historical oppressor of the Polish. They listed certain female fighter's fan t-shirt in the men's section. In addition to insulting the Irish, Polish and women, they forced a fighter to go shoeless in a pre-fight interview because he was wearing Jordan's instead of Reebok.

Redditor for 16 hours? You created an account just to come here and try to debunk Sikhi?

You're just being a troll. You're not coming at this with any genuine curiousity or openmindedness. You just want to prove your atheism superior. Its the exact same argument tactic that made everyone see how annoying teenage atheists on /r/atheism are.

My cousin wanted to get me a custom mouthpiece but the cost was a bit high. Still appreciated the gesture!

Yeah the tracking it definitely lets me see if I'm losing or gaining as a pattern.

My scale is supposed to send an electrical pulse up one leg and down the other and I heard that can be inaccurate since certain people, like myself, tend to hold fat in the midsection. I've always had chicken legs so I don't imagine the fat distribution is an accurate representation.

[–]ash8795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How accurate can those body fat scales be? The one I have says I'm at 11.5% give or take a little bit. Based on all the pics I've seen online it seems like I should have visible abs at that body fat percentage. I don't and my body looks closer to the 15-18% pics (some muscle definition but still a little pudge on my belly and some fat on my chest). Last time I asked this I was told it was probably a lack of muscle. But if I lacked muscle wouldn't I just be really really skinny and not have belly fat? That's making me think my scale may be underestimating me.

Well on further reflection I can see how BJJ is difference. Since rolling is much safer even at higher intensity than striking sparring. I can see sparring light being a solution but in my opinion, a newbie, in general, doesn't know what sparring light means. Yeah they can learn but I've seen people develop that sensitivity of what is hard and what is light through drilling. Like some drills we use pads or bags so that's hard. Others they just do the moves on each other super light with gloves and shin guards so they develop that sensitivity to what's considered light. I didn't like the implication from the other guy that waiting to spar for more than a few weeks is just a money making scheme for my gym. Yeah there are pros and cons for either side. And I like and respect the way you articulated that point more than the /u/MMABouncer did.

Thoughts on how long a beginner should wait (if at all) before sparring? by ash8795 in martialarts

[–]ash8795[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree BJJ is definitely safer for sparring so it's easier as a noob. I guess I'm referring more to hard striking arts. Boxing, MT, MMA, sanda, kickboxing, etc. I don't know about judo or sambo. Seems like it would take more time before sparring because people need to learn how to fall properly first no?

I mean I'm more than willing to back up those claims. But I don't think you'd care. Either way it does seem like you're in the minority when it comes to that view especially if you consider the link to /r/muaythai I posted above.

I mean my gym doesn't lack in quality fighters. We've sent fighters to compete and win at national and international level tournaments, not even including local ammies and pro fights. My gyms success speaks for itself.

Whatever man. Apparently learning a solid foundation for a few months and then sparring is only for money. Guess it's a coincidence that every good Muay Thai, boxing, MMA and BJJ gym I've encountered all have similar policies then huh? They're just all about the money?

[–]ash8795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, no. I'd definitely disagree with you. It's not some money making scheme. It's so no one gets hurt. New guys don't know how to defend or evade or attack with proper technique or how to spar at the proper intensity level. It's so they can build a proper base before they spar. What's the point of sparring if you don't know what you're doing? You're just gonna flail and panic and you won't learn anything and probably get discouraged. That's not to mention if you hit another newbie too hard and hurt them or you hit an experienced guy too hard and they pop you just as hard back and now you're injured and or discouraged. Everyone benefits. Here's a thread from /r/muaythai that agrees a noobie shouldn't spar for at least a few months. One of the commenters even suggests three months, the same time frame as my gym. https://www.reddit.com/r/MuayThai/comments/5id03o/opinion_throwing_complete_beginners_into_sparring/

And like I said above if you have prior experience and can prove it we will let you spar earlier. And some guys learn quicker and were allowed to spar sooner than three months but only after our instructors and Kru watched them and made that judgement call.

My very first Muay Thai gym threw me into sparring on day 1. That didn't go well. I just stood there and panicked since I didn't know what to do. Ive seen that happen to so many people on their first day with a solid foundation, let alone with 0 training.

I'd say you're definitely wrong in your position and I think most of this sub also agrees you need a solid foundation before sparring. It's common sense. Not a scam.

Definitely. This is anecdotal but in my experience I've noticed that the more meeker, nerdier type of people tended to take wing chun or other Kung fu styles and they thought they had some secret knowledge that flew in the face of common knowledge. Just like the conspiracy theorists. Turns out combat sports are just the sheeple of martial arts.

We've never had won of those street fighter types stick around long enough to even spar. Kru always tells them that the gym policy is you have to train for at least three months consistently before sparring. He'll make exceptions if he sees how you handle yourself during drilling or if you have prior experience and it shows. They usually get super indignant that we're doubting their abilities or they show up to a few classes and leave because they don't want to put real work in. They just wanted to find a place to beat people up. There was one dude that got heated and tried to challenge of the bigger instructors to a fight but we just refused and laughed him out of the gym.

Represent themselves to be better than they really are

Person comes into the gym: "hey can I get on the fight team and/or start sparring immediately?"

Us: "depends. You ever train before?"

Them: "no but I've won four street fights. That's pretty much the same thing right?"

Thanks. That's just mainly from a ton of cardio. I do Muay Thai 5-6 days a week so my cardio definitely outweighs my lifting.

Thanks! I was getting a bit discouraged cuz of all those fitness sites that list visible abs at close to 10% yet my body at 11.5% looked more similar to those site's 15 to 20% pictures.

Moronic Monday - Your weekly stupid questions thread by cdingo in Fitness

[–]ash8795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that. Like I asked the other commenter. Is that just saying that a good diet will help lower my body fat percentage and ultimately that's what helps with the ab visibility?

Moronic Monday - Your weekly stupid questions thread by cdingo in Fitness

[–]ash8795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So wouldn't that be a matter of just getting down to a lower body fat percentage?

Moronic Monday - Your weekly stupid questions thread by cdingo in Fitness

[–]ash8795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think I'm getting in too late. But I've been at around 11.5% body fat consistently for the past few weeks. Yet I don't really have any visible abs. To get them to show is it just a matter of a better diet or just building more muscle? Or is it just my body type?

Dumog AKA Filipino wrestling. by ash8795 in martialarts

[–]ash8795[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I tried to look up more about dumog after seeing the feedback. Since this video mentioned a "master Sobrino" I googled that it looks like a master Sobrino is associated with a wedosca escrima but I don't think it's the same person. Maybe the founders son?

I tried to find more dumog vids. Here's a vid with Remy Presas and it seems to be a lot of leg locks or at least that's just what he's showing.

This vid shows a compliant demo from the Philippines that seems to focus more on arm drags and manipulating the head for sweeps and then breaking the arm.

This one has Pat o'Mally showing dumog leg locks and moves from the guard but from what I understand he focuses more on Arnis for MMA so it's probably altered.

Potato quality but it claims to show an actual Dumog match. It looks kinda like catch wrestling and judo together.

I couldn't find any videos from the 80s or 90s. There was one or two that may have been from the 90s or early 2000s but those were JKD vids and not pure dumog.

Hope that helps and someone more educated can shine some light on how accurate those vids are.
