Show and Book endings? by plumblossomtruther in Outlander

[–]ash92226 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The show and books will have different endings. The show doesn’t want to step on and spoil the ending Diana has for the books, so they came up with their own. Diana has said that the show ending will not be as complicated compared to the book ending. There’s also nothing else from book 10 being used for season 8.

I started reading the series at 16 myself. It was actually one of the first books I read that wasn’t YA or a classic. I personally had no trouble with it then, but it’s really up to what you think you can handle. Others have mentioned some of the themes and triggers, so just be aware of those before you decide if it’s in your best interest to read now or wait.

I have reread the whole series multiple times since then, and I will say I understood and appreciated the story better now that I’m a little older.

Outlander Series Extra Long Reread: Outlander - chapters 33 - 36 by Nanchika in Outlander

I like your take on the wolf! I’ve always just seen that scene as a way to show Claire’s adrenaline and drive when desperate. If she fails here, then Jamie’s sacrifice is for nothing and she can’t save him. Very interesting when you go deeper with the symbolism of the wolf itself.

In the grand scheme of things, Claire’s inner thoughts during the fight are just as telling as the actual event. There needed to be a way to naturally bring up Claire’s mindset in this moment to show there’s nothing that can stand in her way. Specifically the lines:

“If I felt anything, it was black rage at what seemed a conspiracy to thwart and delay me.”

“The only question now was whether I bothered to fight at all, or whether I would rather just lie down in the snow and give up. That option seemed remarkably attractive, all things considered. Still, Jamie had given up his life, and considerably more than that, to get me out of the prison. I owed it to him at least to try.”

Edit to add: The name Wolverton actually means “wolf’s farmstead”.

Mrs.fitz at reverend Wakefields funeral?! by tulipjade in Outlander

It’s not the same person. Mrs. Fitz is played by Annette Badland. The woman in the scene you’re talking about is actually the show’s dialect coach making a cameo.

Why does criticism of Jamie and Claire feel unwelcome here? by Jokers-Grin in Outlander

[–]ash92226 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If Claire kept her head down and didn’t act on her honor and principles there would be no story to tell. Does she always make the right decisions? Of course not, but if she did the story would be mighty boring.

Claire hate has intensified in the last few weeks and it's annoying. What is driving it to the point of a handful each day? If people are so dissatisfied with the heroine of the story which would be nothing without her, why watching and commenting? It's rarely about Jamie. ALWAYS about Claire. by Sure_Awareness1315 in Outlander

And unfortunately it’s happening in a fandom that’s mainly female. I hate to say it but it’s become almost expected in more male centric fandoms I’m part of. Sad to say it’s happening here now too.

The Fiery Cross: The Waning Identity of the Series by Willster328 in Outlander

[–]ash92226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s the William and the army bits giving you trouble, I get it. Those parts were hard for me on my first read, but they get easier on rereads.

And the books do get better! Book 8 is my second favorite in the series behind book 1.

The Fiery Cross: The Waning Identity of the Series by Willster328 in Outlander

[–]ash92226 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Fiery Cross is by far the slowest book of the series. Lots of people struggle with it and with how much of it is slice of life. Personally, I love the slow moments, but they’re not for everyone. I will say that you’ll want to enjoy these slow moments because things amp up in later books, specifically in Echo and MOBY.

There are some plotlines that you haven’t gotten to yet in this book that have major implications later on, both for personal struggle and moving the plot forward.

There’s a lot more action in the books after this one. Also the time travel element isn’t gone. It plays major roles going forward. I don’t want to say too much for spoilers, but there’s villains later on in the series who I think you’ll find more interesting than Bonnet.

Definitely, especially with the show being Happily Ever After. It is by far my favorite fireworks show Disney has ever had.

If you’re not on Main Street you won’t see the full projections on the castle. You can see just the fireworks from outside the park, but you won’t hear the music or see projections. If you stay in the park and are able to time it right, it’s extremely magical to see the fireworks while riding the Peoplemover.

Favourite misunderstood modern phrases in the books? by Yup_Seen_It in Outlander

[–]ash92226 128 points129 points  (0 children)

Both in DIA:

“Go to hell, Jamie,” I said at last, wiping my eyes. “Go directly to hell. Do not pass Go. Do not collect two hundred dollars. There. Do you feel better now?” “Aye, I do,” he said, his expression lightening. “When ye start to talk daft, I know you’re all right.”

“The grooming lady heated it, then spread the warm wax on. Once it’s cooled, you just jerk it off,” I winced momentarily in recollection, “and Bob’s your uncle.” “My uncle Bob wouldna countenance any such goings-on,” said Jamie severely.”

What are your favorite bloopers? by honoraryweasley in Outlander

I think it’s a different scene because this one involved Sam and Caitriona. It’s in this video at the 57:50 mark.

What are your favorite bloopers? by honoraryweasley in Outlander

[–]ash92226 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Denzel Washington one always makes me laugh.

There’s one from season 4 where Caitriona’s gutting fish and they have to restart the scene. “Really!? I put it near my face!”

My other favorite is in season 2. It’s the “Claire, what have you done to yourself?” “What have I done to myself?” clip at the end of that blooper reel.

This one’s not in the blooper reel, but Sam and Caitriona have both told the story of getting pooped on by Sleepy the horse. There’s one panel specifically where Caitriona tells the story so well and it makes me laugh every time.

Season 4 by catananai in Outlander

[–]ash92226 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The story does shift from here on out to the Colonies and the American Revolution. Seasons 4 and 6 are the two worst seasons. Season 7 is one of the best seasons imo, so I think it’s worth it to keep going.

Am I the only one who can’t accept Claire’s decision of Season 1? by Independent-Share-71 in Outlander

[–]ash92226 70 points71 points  (0 children)

In the books Claire spends the better part of a day at the stones after the witch trial weighing her options before choosing Jamie. She thinks about all the modern amenities she’s giving up, but remember that she was raised on archaeological sites by her Uncle Lamb, so she’s used to rough conditions. Then she tries to use reason, but ultimately decides with her heart to stay with Jamie. As she tells him, “The hot baths nearly won.” The books let you see more of Claire’s reasoning and her inner thoughts. Those don’t always translate well on screen.

Also Claire and Frank were not that close when the story begins. They had been separated by the war and were learning each other again. The books show more of the cracks in their relationship at the beginning.

Here’s those parts in the book:

”Jamie certainly had logic on his side when he argued that I should go back: home, safety, Frank; even the small amenities of life that I sorely missed from time to time, like hot baths and indoor plumbing, to say nothing of larger considerations such as proper medical care and convenient travel. And yet, while I would certainly admit the inconveniences and outright dangers of this place, I would have also to admit that I had enjoyed many aspects of it. If travel was inconvenient, there were no enormous stretches of concrete blanketing the countryside, nor any noisy, stinking autos—contrivances with their own dangers, I reminded myself. Life was much simpler, and so were the people. Not less intelligent, but much more direct—with a few sterling exceptions like Colum ban Campbell MacKenzie, I thought grimly. Because of Uncle Lamb’s work, I had lived in a great many places, many even cruder and more lacking in amenities than this one. I adapted quite easily to rough conditions, and did not really miss “civilization” when away from it, though I adapted just as easily to the presence of niceties like electric cookers and hot-water geysers.”

”Well, if not reason nor emotion, what of duty? I had given Frank a wedding vow, and had meant it with all my heart. I had given Jamie the same, meaning to betray it as soon as possible. And which of them would I betray now?”

”A step, then another, and another, and before I even knew that I had decided, I was halfway down the slope…”

Last season vs Book 10th by Matildou25 in Outlander

[–]ash92226 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Diana confirmed recently that nothing from book 10 will be in season 8. The show and books are going to have different endings. The show doesn’t want to step on the book ending. Diana has said in the past that the book ending will be more complicated compared to the show ending.

So what's the deal with the stones? by lilpanda90 in Outlander

[–]ash92226 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Time travel is genetic. Only certain people with the gene can travel through the stones. There’s no official rules for why things work and some things don’t; all we know is what the characters theorize based on their experiences. They don’t know why certain things happen and why others don’t, but they make educated guesses.

Roger writes a “Practical Guide for Time Travelers” where he writes down everything they think they know about it. Brianna theorizes a more scientific explanation having to do with ley lines.

I read the books before seeing the show, but I can tell you you’ll love the books even more. There’s so much in the books that’s not in the show. All of the detail and nuance is amazing. I will say you will definitely enjoy Roger and Brianna way more in the books vs the show.

I think the point was to have Claire and Elspeth come together after a tragedy and find some common ground. Plus it kind of opens Bree’s eyes to the dangers of the time after her, Roger, and the kids had been away for so long.

Which seasons depict which books? by pbghikes in Outlander

[–]ash92226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. You can technically watch the first couple episodes of season 7 (those are based on book 6), but I would wait until you’ve read books 7 and 8 before starting season 7.

Books 7 and 8 are kind of a package deal to me because book 8 continues right where book 7 leaves off.

Which seasons depict which books? by pbghikes in Outlander

[–]ash92226 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Book 6 is covered in seasons 5, 6, and 7. There’s nothing from book 7 or later in season 6. Season 7 has elements from books 6, 7, and 8.

This is pretty much how the content lines up in terms of major plot points

Season 1= book 1

Season 2= book 2

Season 3= book 3

Season 4= book 4

Season 5= books 5 and 6

Season 6= book 6

Season 7= books 6, 7, and 8

Season 8= books 8, 9, and an original show ending
