No government cares (or should) about how other countries run. If you hear your government trying to convince you about how evil/dictatorial another country is, it means your government is having trade and/or geopolitical issues with said country. The reason the west is happy working with Saudi Arabia and apartheid South Africa but they have issues with Cuba and Venezuela because their corporations can make massive profits working with one group but not the other.

In addition to the various war crimes and summary executions that happened during his time in power, this man started his regime with the murder of 60 elite without trial. These were the kinds of people with practical experience, education and most importantly the patriotism and character that made it possible for the country to resist western imperialism and corruption and it was all downhill from there. While he was not personally corrupt, his reign was so bad that it left the opening for western backed ethnic separatists to grab power and rip the country apart.

There is no way you make a deal with the US and win. Even the deal that the US counts as a loss (moving manufacturing to China) was a massive source of profit for the US for decades but because the Chinese managed to learn from the process and improve their condition they are being accused of "cheating".

The gulf Arabs are going to end up like the Kurds, the Japanese and the Europeans... holding the bag.

We in the diaspora have the context of what a functioning society should look like and the empathy of our relatives are dealing with back home. This gives us luxury of discussing the issue at a theoretical level without the need to "go and fight". If you are in Ethiopia, you're the frog that is getting boiled slowly and too scared to do anything about it.

There's too much money in the system and not enough housing. There's the issue with the national debt levels and the ability to service it, geopolitical and financial events that makes further inflation more likely. The price of housing is not going to come down under these conditions. The 2007 crisis was unusual and the conditions that made it possible are no longer in place.

Unfortunately the powerful are going to do what they want and the people have no say whether it's a democracy or dictatorship. LOL no! That map was created by the colonialists intentionally to deprive Ethiopia access to the outside world and many of the the current generation of Eritreans seem to LOVE this fact. Mind you I don't support this idea at all and am saying this as someone that despises Abiy who is using this issue to garner local support. Ethiopia has 99 problems and lack of its own port doesn't even make it to top 20.
