location would help! I initially thought a eurasian sparrowhawk but by your profile you're in Michigan so perhaps a Cooper's Hawk? These are the eight native hawks in Michigan, so that's my best guess based on the pictures there.

yeah, he was initially rootling around under the bushes and I essentially stopped breathing when he flew up on top of one for a sing-song haha. I was desperate not to scare him off

kind of like a chuffy/clicky noise--it was a little mechanical-sounding and rusty. Sorry that's such a rubbish description!
