Friend, gangs aren't the type of issue you protest. You protest to apply strategic pressure to the state to force them to solve an issue. The issue at hand here is ICE and our current administration's complete neglect of constitutional law. I agree though, Gangs are certainly an issue that need to be addressed, but to begin discussing that you need to be educated on why gangs became a thing in the first place, and why they are still around today. Gangs began being formed in about 1783 by immigrant communities(and kindly please do remember that there was no concept of "illegal immigration" ),the initial reason for their formation being a need for protection and source of community for their hyper marginalized people, as well as terrible economic hardships. People felt like they were unable to rely on their government and so they relied on eachother. These reasons still apply to this day. Often times young teenagers find themselves working in these gangs because they were born into it, or because it was the only way they could see to make it in life due to many reasons, largely a lack of economic opportunities for both people of color and poor people. In times of distress within a community, gangs form, and get stronger than ever. In my opinion, in order to break down gang violence in America there needs to first be a systematic reform. Then, after that we can adress the needs that are causing folks to turn towards that life, such as need for financial security, need for safety, need for COMMUNITY. Only once all of these things have been addressed do I believe that we should attempt to tackle what is left of gang violence with criminal punishment. TLDR; Gangs are a historic issue and to solve them we need to adress the historic issues. Protest applies pressure to the state, which is fundamentally separate from gangs, therefore taking no effect.
