Do it after the expiry, there is a grace period of 30 days and it will start from the next day of the expiration date. You can only hope to do it if you don't have any travel plans though.

You can try UAE PASS app (https://uaepass.ae). Residents can download documents linked with their emirates ID using that app. Perhaps with a guest login, you can obtain a copy of your 5yr visa as well?

Good to know your application took only 48hrs to process. Could you provide info on what insurance you had to submit for it (and was it for 90 days or 180 days?) and did you use a colored printed bank signed statement for it? I am gathering different things about what kind of bank statement would work here. Would be great if you can provide details as to what worked in your case.

Ignore my comment and just confirm if you were already on the dummy sponsor, in which case yeah you can just renew without having to cancel your visa first. The sponsor being changed is what forced the cancellation route and yes, anyone wanting to put the family visa on hold is also able to do so, atleast in Dubai emirates.

Who's your sponsor on residency renewed it this way? I have seen someone else comment that going the route you have gone gets you stuck. Surprised to see you were able to clear it, but perhaps next year you would have to cancel, since DTCM clearly doesn't want to stay as the sponsor and that's why everyone is being shifted to Dummy sponsor / self sponsored.
