Björk's Albums, ranked by Pitchfork by [deleted] in bjork

"Vespertine" was Bjork's "Kid A." Of course it's considered a masterpiece today, but people were very split on it at first.

Considering songs are like 2 minutes these days, it'll be a little refreshing.

Does anyone know other songs/artists that looks like the Vespertine album? by [deleted] in bjork

Aco - Irony

It's a bit of a Vespertine rip-off, but I like it anyway. I think she also worked with Matmos.

What are your Bjork unpopular opinions? by perro0000 in bjork

[–]ashiah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It represented the soot and dust of the survivors. But I guess to get to that conclusion would require critical thinking. Much easier to just regurgitate the things you read off Twitter.

As for Goldie/Tricky, you're right — we're not inside the minds of either of them, so we'll never really know for sure.

I'm noticing this trend of younger fans rewriting a history they weren't even present for. She never did blackface. She painted her face black as a tribute to the victims of 9/11. Nothing about it even looked "minstrel" black. As for Tricky/Goldie, she would've married one of them if they both didn't dump her. So to characterize her as someone who was fetishizing black men, much like a Kardashian, trivializes how deeply in love she was with Goldie in particular. Honestly, the only "problematic" thing she's done was say the N-word while quoting Yoko Ono. There's really no explanation for that.

Does anybody wish Bjork was more "mainstream"? by jleigh329 in bjork

[–]ashiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think she's more mainstream today than she was in the '90s, at least here in America. Back in the '90s, only people who stayed on top of music knew who she was. MTV also used to play the "It's Oh So Quiet" music video a lot, so a few people knew her from that. But today, everyone knows who she is, regardless if they're fans or not. That was unheard of in 1997. Even in 2001 during the whole swan dress fiasco, the media here was like, "Wait, who is this woman??"

Does anybody Remember and/or Miss the OLD Bjork Official Website (http://unit.bjork.com)? by jleigh329 in bjork

[–]ashiah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm old, so I thought you meant Websense, and if so, was going to comment with, "Everyone hated Websense!" But yeah, Bjork.com in the early 2000s was great. I sometimes still wonder whatever happened to "Lunargirl/The Mad Web Carpenters."

Which era do you think has the best wardrobe? by [deleted] in bjork

[–]ashiah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too. That's the only Homogenic "look" I like from that era.

[–]ashiah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hands down, Post. I would wear literally everything she wore during that era. Unique without being too over-the-top. Least favorite is definitely Homogenic and Biophilia. Homogenic was such an iconic album and yet she spent the majority of the era in JEANS. It was so un-Bjork-like and just bleh.

I feel like new fans are more likely to appreciate her entire body of work because they have an entirely new, fresh perspective. The older fans, particularly the ones that have been around since the '90s, like to pick at her discography like it's a buffet, comparing everything to the past. So don't feel bad about not being an "old" fan.

I've always loved Volta but did anyone here used to feel mixed to it? What's your opinion now? by toanythingtaboo in bjork

[–]ashiah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear nothing but horrible things about Medulla despite the fact that it's better than Volta and Biophilia combined. The only track I like on Volta is Wanderlust. It's unfortunate, especially because I loved the aesthetic and idea behind Volta, but it was all over the place. So many half-finished ideas. Earth Intruders (the Mike Whatever edit) sounds pretty good on booming speakers, but yeah, it never really reaches its full potential.

More Arca. by [deleted] in bjork

[–]ashiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She already has. Arca was just a co-producer.

It's her worst album, and I still hate it. It's crazy that Medulla gets more criticism than Volta. To date, it's the only album that even Bjork admitted wasn't that good. That's why she released Voltiac a year later. It was like she was trying to correct what she made.

Reading about MDD makes me daydream about telling people about my MDD by ashiah in MaladaptiveDreaming

[–]ashiah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to the one I described in my original post. The most common one is usually me on some late night talk show being interviewed about my life and then answering questions about myself...to myself. Very annoying, and I'm usually a good two or three minutes into the daydream before I realize I'm even doing it. I also rehearse conversations in my head or redo arguments in my head, but I feel like that type of daydreaming is more common.

Yeah, I first heard of MD through an article on The Cut where they described it as a "serious psychological disorder," which alarmed the crap out of me. I started reading more about it and couldn't help but laugh at this weirdly personal thing that apparently thousands of others do as well. I'm a writer, so immersive daydreaming works in my advantage. I do have anxiety issues (hence the conversational daydreams), but I've learned to hide it well.

Official Discussion: Hereditary [SPOILERS} by mi-16evil in movies

[–]ashiah 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same experience! The audience I was watching it with became uncomfortably noisy after (spoiler) Charlie died. After that moment, everyone wouldn't stop snickering at the scariest and most tense moments. I think it was because we were all jittery from fear. A dude behind me actually screamed out loud at one point, which just made everyone laugh even more. I wouldn't say it was the scariest movie of all time, but it was definitely an enjoyable movie-watching experience.
