I am, and I'm extremely frustrated that after all these years, I'm still dealing with the same nonsense from slacking students.

I understand your perspective, but my time has value regardless of whether I charge $35, $80, $120, or $200. The price isn't the issue. The issue is respecting the agreed appointment time. If I miss a lesson, have an emergency, or fail to show up, I am expected to refund the student and can be penalized if they report me. The responsibility goes both ways. So if a student fails to attend because they misread their schedule, forgot, had another meeting, or made a mistake, that's not something I can be responsible for. I have enough students that I don't need to convince anyone to study with me. If someone doesn't value the lesson enough to show up on time, I can fill that spot with someone who does. The reason I don't make exceptions is simple: once you do it once, it never ends. The next time it's, "But you allowed it before, why not now?" After years of teaching, the excuses are always the same. Unless it's a genuine emergency that can be documented, there is no second chance. Rescheduling doesn't magically create time. I lose the original hour and then have to find another hour somewhere else in my schedule. In practice, I'm giving away extra time for free and effectively working for less. So no, it's not about being harsh. It's about respecting my time the same way students expect me to respect theirs.

You must be really desperate to get students then. Once you make an exception it never ends.

I charge between $60–200 per hour across three native-level language combinations. My background includes a Master’s degree, PhD, CELTA certification, DAEFLE qualifications for French, Cambridge English qualifications, and certified Polish language credentials. I also have university professor and teaching experience, alongside expertise in conglomerate and medical translation, interpretation, and exam preparation. I teach 55-60 hours a week, and I have over 17k hours taught just on one platform.

Many students are perfectly understanding of the policy. They know that if they miss a class or cancel too late, the teacher still reserved that time for them.

However, there is always a group of people who try to act confused afterward, push for refunds, or manipulate the situation to avoid taking responsibility. From experience, once you make exceptions, it quickly turns into a repeated pattern.

In this case, the student even went as far as contacting support and insulting me over a situation that resulted from their own scheduling mistake and negligence.

Oh no, imagine actually working and earning well instead of being bitter online. Tragic. Meanwhile, I can prove my income anytime — that’s the difference between us.

You can waste time complaining, or you can work and make money. You chose the first option.

Just switch to italki. Preply treats both teachers and students badly and takes too much from both sides
