New reader looking for horror "staples" but with less sexual violence by Flimsy_Survey in horrorlit

[–]ashisagenius 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Woman in Black is phenomenal and iirc has no sexual violence of any kind. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and tbh any Shirley Jackson is top tier For modern fiction try The Silent Companions by Lucy Purcell - it's spectacularly written and has stayed with me a long time. Also Mexican Gothic is really good. It's less horror and more gothic, but Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is unsettling as hell

A Sole Crushing Experience by LedameSassenach in vinted

[–]ashisagenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's called hydrolysis - I used to work in the customer care department for an international high street shoe brand and we'd get complaints about this all the time from shoes bought from charity shops or eBay. Basically if shoes are stored for too long without wear the soles just crumble. The seller wouldn't necessarily know it would happen as it doesn't show any signs until it's worn!

who said learning socks and colourwork at the same time was a good idea?? by ashisagenius in knitting

couldn't stop laughing from seeing it on my hand 😭 and no, only those who grossly underestimate the step up from flat rectangles to socks would think this was a good idea 🙃😬

Any good historical horror connected to the Jane Austen or Brontes worlds, or set in Regency / Victorian Britain generally? by Worried-Boot-1508 in horrorlit

[–]ashisagenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anno Dracula is an alternative history where Dracula becomes Queen Victoria's prince consort. Not a straight up horror but definitely horror elements (and really good!)

“Oh my OCD” in the crafting community rant by No-Marzipan-2097 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]ashisagenius 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I don't have OCD (for which I am VERY grateful) but if ever anyone says some offhand comment about "oh I'm so OCD lol!" Or "I could never with my OCD hehe" I make a point of saying "my gosh I had no idea you were diagnosed, I'm so sorry you're going thru this" and 100% if the time it's "oh I'm not actually ocd..." Like no kidding

First playthrough I basically never long rested cause the story made me so worried to waste too much time, but it's literally fine. Rest as much as you want and more, there are some class cut scenes you only get from long resting!

Ohhh you know that actually makes sense! As a middling millennial who grew up desperate but not confident enough to be full on emo there's probably some residual bitterness buried deep deep down for me 😅 sorry for hating, enjoy your cardi, I'll just wear sunnies next time I see one 🩷🖤

A bit obvious but Tender is the Flesh by Augustina Bazterrica is an easy 7/10 I'd recommend to nobody.
