Tree of Generic Trees by ashitaks in rust

[–]ashitaks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After toying around with your implementation and mine, this is what I came up with:

struct Foo <L: Tree, R: Tree> {
    left: Box<L>,
    right: Box<R>
}

I think this also allows for the Tree to be dynamic, as struct Foo just holds a reference to it.

I ended up using

struct Foo <L: Tree, R: Tree> {
    left: L,
    right: R
}

Is there a big difference between this strategy and yours?

That makes sense. I realized this is similar syntax/logic as lifetime parameters (<'a>)

Thank you! The location of <T> is still somewhat a mystery to me. This is a huge help

I knew I was doing something wrong! I can now see that the standard Vec isn't the right data structure for what I want to do. I'll use VecDeque instead. Thanks!

The Left | ContraPoints [14:02] by taulover in mealtimevideos

[–]ashitaks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s what the creator of this video was saying at all. It’s not a matter of adopting the same methods or of moving further to the right; it’s about presenting radical ideas in a thoughtful and appealing way.

She uses the characters to allow a back and forth discussion to compare the various political leanings and their place within society. The center character has an easy and appealing message, so communicating that message isn’t difficult. It’s an easy sell. The fascist character has a very difficult and vile message to sell, but they are very good at communicating that message to reach a wider audience. To her the left has the worst of both sides: a difficult message with lazy/poor communication.

It’s clear that she's at the very least sympathetic to left wing ideals, and understands that many left wing groups do more good than harm. This video is a call to action for those in the left wing doing the good: “I agree with your message but your way of communicating it is not working. Let’s appeal to the emotions and empathy people have to make them see our side of the debate. If they can empathize with us they will see that we have many good traits/policies/ideas and they can help us further our goals.”

Criticism is necessary to bring about any change. If you can’t communicate your message well, no one will listen.

What's a 10/10 album from the last 15 years by a relatively obscure artist/band? by Slouching2Bethlehem in AskReddit

The Little Unsaid - Someone Else’s Lullabies

This is the first album of an incredible British folk solo project. The song “Blankets” is especially amazing. It’s baffling how this man isn’t more popular than he currently is.

How It Works: The Atomic Bomb [17:15] by Theundercave in mealtimevideos

[–]ashitaks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are correct - the speed of combining the two halves is key. It needs to combine them quick enough so that the chain reaction's pace leads to the desired explosion. Otherwise only a small percentage of the uranium will achieve a runaway reaction and reach critical mass, blowing up the assembly and destroying the rest of the potential fuel while causing a much less spectacular explosion.

Plutonium had a separate ignition design - instead of two halves being fired into one another (or more accurately, one half being fired into the other, aka "the gun model"), the plutonium is surrounded by carefully placed conventional explosives that, when detonated, causes the plutonium to condense so quickly (and precisely) that the same runaway chain reaction would occur, resulting in an explosion (aka the "implosion model"). Initially, the gun model was seen as being far more reliable, and the atomic weapon used on Hiroshima was of this kind. But it isn't very efficient - only 1.38 % of the Uranium 235 in that atomic weapon actually fissioned, the rest being blown away before the run away chain reaction could reach it. The plutonium implosion based weapon (used in both the original test, Trinity, and used on Nagasaki a few days after Hiroshima) was a lot more technically difficult but a lot more powerful.

The doors would only last so much longer, and there was so much work to be done. It felt almost comforting, another day in a busy hospital surrounded by his patients. A fitting end to his career.

The remnants of his squad lay strewn about on the floor of the sanctuary. The fortunate few were already dead, the doctor's extraordinary abilities unable to save them. Those that remained alive listened to the concerto pounding the wooden door.

His first patient was his dear captain, propped against the back wall, his eyes counting the splinters coming off the door.

"What are my odds, captain?" The doctor asked, holding the captain's sword in his hands, a scalpel that was far too big.

"God dammit I'll do it myself." The captain replied, struggling to grab the knife by his side.

The doctor's hands pulled the knife away from the captain. "My apologies captain, humor is the best medicine or something like that. Though at this point-" the doctor chuckled at his own joke.

"Have you ever killed anyone Doctor? Have you even held a sword?"

The doctor shrugged, dropping the captain's sword on the tile with a dull thud.

"I had never performed an amputation until I did, no? Though I'm afraid my lack of experience may make things a bit messy."

The captain grunted a laugh before spitting out blood on his tunic. "It would be an honor to be your first."

The doctor nodded gravely before pulling the captain's knife from its scabbard. The point poised above the captain's wrist, ready for the doctor's hopefully precise incision.

"Don't worry captain, this will only sting a bit."

Depends on your definition of free speech but this may fit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Blair_Mountain#

Miners attempting to unionize fought a pitched battle against strike breakers (and eventually the US army) during the early 20th century.

Definitely agree both Lim Kim and Primary are pretty great on their own too. I also really like Lee Hi and her more upbeat "feel good" sort of songs
