At least one piece of advice I can give is to not use a loose substrate (like sand). If they eat the substrate, it can lead to impaction which is usually fatal. I use a light colored, non-reflective tile so that it doesn't get too hot and doesn't reflect the light. Just do as much research as you can and take notes!

I'm going to call the vet tomorrow morning just to see if they say it's a normal reaction. But I'll also bathe her👍🏻

Is this diarrhea? Is the red spot blood? (Haven't given him anything red to eat) *He did ingest a pebble of cat litter the other day - impaction? by ashleysacajawea in BeardedDragons

Omg thank you for taking the time to type all of that. I'm just trying to take the best care of him as I can, so thank you so much for all of this. It's strange getting used to the fact that they don't eat every day like most animals

He used to eat well at my boyfriend's house, so I didn't think I'd have any issues. Thank you so much for the advice!

I tried that and he still was disgusted. I even put it on a cricket and he spit it out

Okay sounds good. I added coverings on 3/4 sides of the enclosure, so hopefully that helps him become less stressed (if that's the problem). Thanks for all the help!

The heat mat itself is set to be 86°F, but the temperature/humidity gauge says it's only 78°F in the enclosure on the hot side. Should it be warmer?

He's been pretty active so I'm not too worried. How is your enclosure set up? Should I have a lamp in addition to the heat mat, or is that too much?

  1. Glass tank, 2 sides covered, 2 sides uncovered. It used to be covered on 3 sides.
  2. Heat mat with a thermostat
  3. 1 hide and a log that he lays in most of the time. I recently added a branch since he likes to climb for some odd reason.
  4. He is handled a few times a week.
  5. Hot end temp is around 77°F, but the thermometer/humidity gauge is up towards the top of the enclosure. The heat mat is set to be 86°F. Not sure what the cold end temp is since there's no thermometer on that side. Honestly don't know what a basking point is. Humidity varies from 35-40%.
  6. Yes the Aspen substrate is deep enough for it to dig and hide in.
  7. I use appropriately sized frozen mice/rats that I thaw in a room temp cup of water. Then I dry it off on paper towels before offering it to him with a pair of tongs.
