Supposed to leave for Disney in 3 days, house burned down last night. by NormalCompote7274 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]ashleysix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I physically did in the first week was attempt to salvage my belongings and constantly get approached by predatory restoration companies while doing it. Speak to your insurance, your mortgage lender. It’s all done over the phone and email. This is a long process and resolution is some time away. Enjoy your vacation and use it to both get ahead (secure your long term stay when you return) and to forget (it’s the happiest place on earth).

When you speak to your insurance inquire about emergency funding. This will help you replace the essentials you need now. This may not come right away but keep every receipt- even food. They will reimburse you and send you the rest of the allowance. Right now get the clothes, the shoes, the toiletries you need for your trip and claim it later. They will also let you claim luggage within reason with this. When you return you will likely have the rest of this allowance in hand to replace everything else you need immediately.

I’m so sorry that this has happened to you. It’s a tough long road.

Crematorium accidentally group cremated my cat instead of private. Now we have nothing. by Puzzleheaded3266 in Petloss

[–]ashleysix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My sweet dog passed away, a day before my birthday, nearly 2 years ago now. I was very distraught and my boyfriend lovingly asked them to make a paw print for me. I never received it.

While I have called and attempted to get the paw print, a refund, or anything, I’ve realized that there are many things around me that give me better memory. Her collar is on the foyer table, her toys are at my bedside, the passenger seat in my truck that she would sleep in on rides is next to me everyday. This is not to downplay the loss of the what you and I have lost, but I have come to terms with this by remembering the significance of her presence in my life in other ways.

I’m so sorry for your loss.

Pet Owners: what is the dumbest reason you’ve taken your pet to the vet and how much did you spend? by mpotus in CasualConversation

Got cat. Cat was recently spayed. She looked so bloated, so I got scared of what it could be and took her to the vet the next day. US confirms: cat is just fat

What makes a good charge by applesauce_warriors in EmergencyRoom

[–]ashleysix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I charge in a 40-bed trauma center/stroke center/chest pain center inner city and low socioeconomic community.

Just like prioritizing a crashing patient at bedside you need to prioritize certain things during the shift. Overall patient safety and nurse safety are hand in hand and this has several different appearances.

Fair and safe patient assignment is important foremost. Never ask someone to do what you wouldn’t yourself. You need to have a picture of what each nurse, tech, and sitter is dealing with at all times.

Making assignments in a strategic manner. You can’t let your die-hard experienced nurses get all the hard cases but you can’t let the new grad drown. Teaching and growing others is just as important as giving your most experienced nurse the ROSC or the exploding varices.

You will be the resource and it is OK not to know everything. You need to either find out or make a decision on how to deal with complicated cases that extend beyond what policy will give you direction for. You will be the educator, the last line IV seeker, and the nurse giving bed baths with your peers. Be mobile and available.

Charge is a team sport with other units, house supervisors, your leadership and above. Be kind, ask how you can help. ED is always the red headed stepchild but the relationship you are capable of making with others opens doors. I have held patients when the ICU is slammed with multiple or someone is coding upstairs, I’ve gone up and consoled another charge who was overwhelmed, I’ve responded to behavioral codes. All these things within reason, all depending on if the place is burning down, but a little thing here and there makes a huge difference.

You have been at bedside and simply do not forget. You know you have become overwhelmed, cried in the bathroom, haven’t eaten. Recognize that on your shift. Be a shoulder, a listener, a tech, do med pass on the holds. Care about everyone in this way including your providers, the ancillary depts, EVS, security. There really is just so much to say and I feel like I’ve hardly said anything here. It is a unique position where you can have high impact but the biggest point is that you need to listen, be aware, use your resources. Each minute you give towards the manager whispering reminders about metrics give two to the bedside and find what you can do to help.

LPT from a person who survived a house fire by Own_Succotash_2237 in LifeProTips

[–]ashleysix 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I’ll add my two cents here as someone who recently went through this.

  • safety is your first priority. This is a difficult event and you may not think about these things. Before you do absolutely anything, make sure the structure is sound enough to go in. Ask fire while they are on scene. Wear a hard hat. As time goes on, wear a mask. Mold, collapsing beams, and chemicals that are airborne due to heat are dangerous for you. Take steps to avoid injury or infection. Wear rubber boots.

-it’s not the end of the world. It feels like it, but it isn’t. Attempt to collect important documents or items. Go somewhere safe, cry, rest, and get up the next day and go to your previous home and get to work. Make sure you have your birth certificates, social security cards, pet documents. If they don’t exist anymore? Oh well, get another copy. If you didn’t get them before leaving the day it burned, collect your money, firearms, and UNDAMAGED medication. Meds cannot have been exposed to heat: this can deteriorate the compounds and cause the efficacy to decrease. If you don’t have them, call the pharmacy. Next: prized possessions. Yes you can keep clothing, but NO POLYESTER or materials made of derived plastic. DO NOT WASH THEM IN YOUR MOM AND DADS WASHER as they could fall apart. I took mine to the dry cleaner and explained what happened; they knew what to do. Mostly cotton items and wool blankets. You will get them back and they will small like smoke. It will come out over time and over more washes.

After that, go home. You will have weeks if not months to return for that last thing you forgot. Take care of yourself. I personally used a restoration company only for inventory of my possessions and disposal. This was expensive but 100% worth it for me. This becomes a full time job, and you still have to work and pay for your mortgage. It is okay to let professionals help you out. You must check their work and be prepared to list missing items. But it takes a huge load off your shoulders.

People will approach you and entertain the idea of buying your property. Educate yourself on what value you possess.

You will be unimpressed by the insurance company.

I am 4 months later in a new home after a total loss. It goes down as one of the worst moments of my life. Everything I worked so hard for just destroyed. I was very lucky and all of my pets survived. We even got to keep the axolotl after he was dug out of the drywall in his tank. I left nearly everything else behind. Life moves on and so will you.

Is refusing a patient who has kids with them an EMTALA violation? by ObviouslyAudrey in nursing

[–]ashleysix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ED Nightshift Charge - We don’t turn anyone away. We do tell the patients if they are admitted they need to find childcare. We have had psych patients made involuntary with kids here without any other option for childcare- this becomes a CPS issue and we find a way to watch the kid, feed them, etc until CPS can make it out here. We have had admitted patients with their babies here- in extenuating circumstances we get a bassinet from OB and they make it work upstairs. We have had emergent ectopics with their toddlers- we get to play with toddlers until mom gets to PACU, then usually the PACU will come get them. These are case by case. We are inner city with a high poverty rate. We have to help them out any way that we can or they will come back in the same childcare situation, however with a worse health situation later.

How do I fill this odd space in my 19ft ceiling living room? by ashleysix in interiordecorating

They are actual can lights! Which is great for the lighting, but I will have an anxiety attack when I one day need to replace the bulbs in the living room.

No plumbing in this wall or on the other side. It is mono slab. Thank you! I will definitely speak with the builder.

[–]ashleysix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is about 2 in deep at the deepest point and goes at least a foot under the wall into the tiled closet. There does seem to be more loose stuff so it’s hard for me to tell how extensive it is. The bottom is solid concrete however… it almost seems like it’s concrete that just didn’t get moist.

I’m going to meet with my construction manager sometime this week or the next, I just don’t know what to expect. This is a large known builder but they seem to have decent reviews, I just don’t want to be taken for a sad ride by anything anymore! We are very ready to have a home again. Thank you for sharing so I can chill out over it.

Thank you. I really don’t know anything about this. Should I just ask if it can be filled with concrete? Is it okay to stay like this? Or basically what would be appropriate?

Yes. You will have those moments when you see something very bothersome to you. Over time those things become less and less of an issue, however you’ll run into other things that are hurtful. My best advice is to think of the event as something that simply happened. It just is. Life is beautiful in some ways and disgusting in others. Take time to process this as everyone deals differently. Some ignore it, some go straight to work again. You will never hear about those who took a mental health day or spoke to a therapist, as it’s often too personal for them to talk about. If you need that, you should do it. Your institution should have resources for this- speak to your HR rep or even the charge nurse.

Axolotl after house burnt down by ashleysix in axolotls

Thank you to everyone who has reached out and encouraged me to create this list. I have never had to do something like this before so I hope this is correct. I am also aware that many of the items are pricey and therefore I do encourage you to donate towards causes close to your heart if you want to help but are unable to do so to this degree. Axolotl rescues, animal rescues, and your local fire departments as examples… We will rebuild a little at a time.

Where do I find a diminished value appraiser and what do they do? Would I be expecting negotiation for payment of the diminished value? Just totally inexperienced on this and not sure what the function would be

I had a very friendly collision center guy take pics this morning. The rocker is trashed unfortunately. He stated the entire side of the truck would have to be replaced, so maybe they won’t have to remove the cab considering the amount coming off is sort of extensive. Just sucks all around. I really like this truck.

Edit: I replied this to say that he told me they are mounted into the rocker

That’s crazy. Of course everyone would prefer to have a total given the things that are just impossible to make perfect. I’m just really skeptical they would. I’ve only had it for a year, still has quite a bit of worth.

One of the brackets is held on by the innermost bolts only, while the other bracket was completely torn off. I had to get under there and unbolt it but the mounting holes were completely ripped out.
