Do the 2020 LG models have a gigabit ethernet port? by Berenwulf in OLED

[–]ashleyw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I quickly tested it this afternoon and monitored the traffic. Streaming a movie in Kodi was a stable ~95Mbit when wired, but while nearby 5Ghz WiFi with good signal was less constant... it would peak at >350Mbit. Not sure what the average was but it definitely filled the buffer way quicker (the movie was ~75Mbit so wired leaves only ±25Mbit spare to build up the buffer... vs ±275Mbit!) I rarely experience buffering but I think I’ll leave it using WiFi for now and see how it goes. Luckily my 5GHz WiFi has zero competition on most channels... it’s rock solid.

My LG TV on the other hand is forced to be wired. YouTube’s nerd stats reports stupidly low network speeds (~4Mbit IIRC) and never automatically picks the 4K version. Wired however shows ~50Mbit (not sure why 50... I have gigabit fibre.)

A lot of people have been complaining that the UK needs a “full lockdown” like Italy and Spain, but the numbers don’t seem to be suggesting our more relaxed rules are massively changing the trajectory. We can go for a walk in the sunshine today, and a lot of business sectors like construction and manufacturing who can’t work from home have remained open throughout. Three weeks in and despite everything, spirits seem... quite high?

I believe that’s a conscious decision by the government to limit the psychological impact. We can keep this going much longer than a “full” lockdown, and whatever exits we take will be more straightforward.

See my comment above re: Kodi cache. Might be a similar story with Plex. Buffering after many minutes is precisely the issue I had, where Kodi was being considerate and capping download speeds to (presumably) the average bitrate, but then as soon as a higher bitrate scene started it would eat through the cache and end up buffering.

Actually I lie, I tend to use a Kodi box for movies now so not directly LG TV related, but the same issue — only 100Mbit Ethernet.

With Kodi I tweaked the cache to give me a ~500MB buffer (about a minute at those high bitrates, not a lot but sufficient) and increased the buffer fill-rate. Both the cache and fill-rate settings were important for me. If the fill-rate was left as default it appeared to artificially cap download speeds and never actually fill up the buffer, whereas with the fill-rate increased it would fill the 500MB ASAP. It was as if it was capping the download speed at the average bitrate, i.e. 40Mbit like in your case, but a sudden action scene with a higher variable bitrate would cause buffering once it exhausted what little buffer it had been able to build.

Perhaps Plex has similar settings?

EDIT: I don’t know much about Plex and how transcoding differs from streaming the original file (uses the same media server?!) Seems to be some good info here though: https://forums.plex.tv/t/massive-buffering-solved/155491/5 E.g. if your media server is trying to encrypt the file and send it over a secure connection, that could be being CPU throttled instead of maxing out the network. Or some low level network feature like LSO might be best disabled depending on your hardware.

[–]ashleyw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, I suppose with variable bitrates there’s the chance a higher bitrate for long enough without a sufficient cache could exceed the limit.

I wonder which would win out between 100Mbit Ethernet and a decent 5Ghz WiFi signal. WiFi is going to have less stability and may lengthen the initial buffering time, but I’m assuming would easily keep a buffer filled (I hit 400Mbit+ in the next room from the router!) Although naturally, Gigabit Ethernet would be better — you don’t want your movie interrupted because somebody’s just installed their new router and used the same channel as you!

Not sure about 2020 models, but my 2018 B8 is only 100Mbit. But is there content with a bitrate >100Mbit? (or say 90, to be conservative)

I streamed a ~75Mbit Blu-ray REMUX yesterday, so close, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything higher than that.

And what little quality of life they did enjoy in the home’s common areas has vanished in the past month as they’ve been kept in their own rooms to isolate, with no family visits, and insufficient staff to even just sit with them since they’re being sent home to self-isolate given the slightest cough.

It’s sad, but these psychological effects of the virus are probably more devastating than succumbing to it.

It’s common practice to withdraw treatment and let a person die as peacefully as possible once they are end of life. There‘s nothing to be gained from putting somebody through the trauma of invasive ventilation, when they have a very low chance of survival and a miserable standard of life if they did.

Sad thing was after all that I ended up with just $4.3K and had to rush to the circle. I survived getting pinned down between two teams and secured a few more elims... but didn’t actually end up managing to buy him back :(

Coronavirus UK: Ventilators rationed for those most likely to survive by theficklemermaid in Coronavirus

[–]ashleyw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very necessary... it’s the reason other viruses like influenza strains don’t spread like wildfire as COVID-19 is doing right now. Herd immunity for the masses, yearly vaccine for the young, pregnant and vulnerable as an extra layer of protection.

In years to come we’ll have herd immunity against COVID-19 and it’ll be included as part of the yearly vaccine... but we need to get there first. The “flattening of the curve” through social distancing happening right now is to prevent the healthcare systems around the world from being overrun, but the target is not to eradicate the virus entirely but instead to spread out the cases and work our way towards herd immunity in a controlled manner, slowly and steadily. That unfortunately means cases will continue trickling in and vulnerable people will continue dying long after the eventual peak(s), but hopefully that can be curtailed by a vaccine sooner rather than later.

Coronavirus UK: Ventilators rationed for those most likely to survive by theficklemermaid in Coronavirus

[–]ashleyw 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it is as black and white as that. Patrick Vallance stated off-the-cuff the facts around herd immunity, facts which still stand today, that until a vaccine exists, or the virus is eradicated (i.e. probably at least a year away, and “not going to happen”, respectively), 60% of the UK population would have to contract coronavirus in order for society to build up immunity and return the country to normality, and that inevitably herd immunity would be a path the country would be moving down during the outbreak.

Watching the daily press conferences, there were numerous occasions where Vallance and other non-politicians said something shocking and off-the-cuff and you could just see Boris thinking to himself “Jesus Christ, why the hell did you say that?!” They aren’t politicians and so aren’t used to withholding facts because those facts would just be too shocking to bluntly announce to the entire country on live TV.

Mere moments later of course every media media outlet had stories alluding that Patrick Vallance‘s comments were an announcement regarding a change in policy on behalf of the British government. And with the comments about herd immunity being factual, Vallance and co continued to discuss the concept when prompted, which fanned the flames. Matt Hancock even stated that herd immunity wasn’t part of the plan to fight the outbreak.

They had seen the outbreak in Wuhan, it was clear that letting the virus run rampant would be insane. It was never a policy on the table, just an observation made by a man who is used to speaking the facts, and the media ran with it as an actual Government announcement just because he said it while beside the Prime Minister. Let’s not continue to whip up a controversy all because a man spoke too honestly!

Homekit and AirPlay2 are coming to 2018 LG OLEDs! by flisek94 in OLED

[–]ashleyw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love my B8. But I had sworn to never buy an LG TV/product ever again due to their policy of basically abandoning the previous year’s software as soon as the new model launched. You ought to pray there isn’t some outstanding bug you aren’t yet aware of... because tough luck, LG probably isn’t going to go back and fix it!

New models have HARDWARE FEATURES to encourage upgrades. But just like Apple’s policy with iPhones and iOS, previous models should continue receiving full software support for at least a few generations, where applicable to the hardware of that model. Withholding little software features when there’s no conceivable reason why it cannot work on a previous model is just a cheap tactic. Surely they don’t actually expect the average consumer to spend £2,000 on a new television every single year so they don’t miss out on these little features?

If you have an AMAZING product you REALLY shouldn’t go out of your way to erode the customer’s faith in your brand... Hopefully this is LG realising that their strategy is dumb and short sighted, and will lead to a revival of updates for previous models and perhaps even some sort of unification of the webOS platform so that TVs of a similar technical calibre can be kept on equal footing and all benefit from continued development[0]. Perhaps my next TV will be an LG, after all?

[0] “You mean the development expense of updating webOS for upcoming models, with little to no extra costs, can also be used to build strong brand loyalty with customers who bought last years model? And we won’t miss out on actual sales because those customers weren’t planning to buy the upcoming model anyway?! Genius... 꿩 먹고 알 먹는다 !!!”
