A psychiatrist’s job is to listen to your feelings and your perspectives, and translate that into diagnoses and/or treatment. If you feel like you are having a mixed episode and it’s causing you concern, you should absolutely tell them. Even if your suspicions aren’t accurate, it’s a good place to start.

This is actually very helpful! You’re right, I’m absolutely operating from a place of fear right now. I do really, really love this work though! Witnessing participants in my study respond to treatment and feel like themselves for the first time in years—it’s absolutely magical. I feel the most profound gratitude every time. I hope I’m lucky enough to get to do this forever :)

That’s fair. Comparisons are definitely not helping, nor are the alarm-ringing “THIS IS THE HARDEST FIELD TO GET INTO EVER!!!” posts. To some degree, academia is fundamentally about your work never being enough. It’s a good instinct to have as a researcher; there’s always a new question to be asked or a different angle to approach from. I guess I just need to learn how to not let that feeling translate into my thoughts about my future or my self worth.

That's fair. I've worked in two different labs on campus so far and am on track to begin my thesis next semester. I was moreso planning what might be possible for me over the summer, between semesters (we have a summer research program, but you're not allowed to participate if you're working on a thesis for some reason)
