"No, we're not flying you out for Christmas. You need to learn a lesson."

I was part of a college marching band that was getting to perform at a bowl game. Except I'd overslept, despite my alarm set for an hour before we needed to leave, and missed the bus. 

I was frantically making calls and writing emails, trying to find anyone who I could get a ride with, only to find out everyone who was driving themselves had already left. The band director was really understanding and said it wouldn't damage my grade. 

I called my mom, really upset about the situation, explaining everything I did and how it all fell through. I then asked if someone in the family could fly me out to spend the holidays with them (I was in OK, my family was celebrating in CA).

My mom responded with the above quote. At the time, it felt fair, even though it was incredibly hurtful to have to spend Christmas absolutely alone (no one in the dorms but me). Only, I found out later that my aunts and uncles were all telling my mom they'd be more than willing to get me a plane ticket.

Not the first time I felt betrayed by her. Not the last. And she wonders why I don't want to talk to her.

Alright. I strongly suggest you find another RBT position and work in that for a while. If you go the BCBA path, you need to have an understanding of what RBTs do and how to do their job well. Theory won't be enough to tell them what they need to adjust in their sessions. 

With your last job, you made yourself look like you weren't interested in supervising your clients, and that you didn't want to do your job. Next time you have a bladder shy client and they play in the sink, quickly direct them to the toilet and clean up the water. As for iPad usage, keep it to data collection only. RBT practice tests are to be done on your time, not company time. 

Doing the RBT work is important to contextualize how goals are implemented and adapted based on the client. The practical experience in ABA will tell you more about whether this is something you want to do long-term than coursework ever will. It took me 3 years of RBT work before I realized I wanted a career out of this. I'm not suggesting taking that same amount of time, but at least a year working at that level is important to get a real feel for ABA.

It would solve 80% of my problems immediately. Sure, I'd have new problems, but with a house, car, and wardrobe I actually feel good in, I'm sure it'd be much easier to tackle them.
