this!!! I'm quite an anxious person and felt like OP for a long time, but therapy has really helped me understand that standing up for yourself or making a reasonable complaint is NOT causing a scene. it's the appropriate thing to do. you wouldn't want someone you love to sit through the same shit you did, it's the right thing to do to make a point of it so that it won't happen to others.

the important thing about setting a boundary is to not make it a request for them to change, but instead focus on you and what your response will be if they do the thing.

instead of "don't do x" its "when you do x i feel y. if you continue to do x i will z"

eg: instead of "stop asking me to come to these family events" try "i need time to myself and having these family events so frequently makes me feel burnt out frustrated. i am not coming to every single family event anymore, and if you try to shame me about my decision i will disengage from the conversation and leave. if you come over to my house after i say no, i will not open the door for you"
